Download or read book The Free School System of the United States Classic Reprint written by Francis Adams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Free School System of the United States The aim of the following pages is to supply for English Educational reformers the means of insight into the operation of the American system of Elementary Education. If it should be objected that the social conditions of England and the United States lie at extremes which render comparisons useless or fallacious, it may be replied, that successive Governments have recognised the policy of examining the educational systems of various countries, with the view of adopting for our own use the best methods found anywhere in practice. Moreover, international comparisons are now forced upon all countries by international competition. That the experience of the United States furnishes valuable lessons for England the writer trusts will be made clear. Notwithstanding the differences which exist in the circumstances of the two countries, the type of the inhabitants is. essentially the same. Nor are the ideas to which Americans attach the greatest importance in education foreign to England. Local self-government is not the conception of American politicians. The people of the United States borrowed the principle from England, and making it the foundation of their Education system, demonstrated the advantages of its application in such a manner. Neither is free education an exotic in England. Of all English schools the free schools have been the most popular. By making education universally free the Americans have made the common school the most popular and successful institution of that country. Download or read book John D Pierce Founder of the Michigan School System written by Charles O. Hoyt and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John D. Pierce, Founder of the Michigan School System: A Study of Education in the Northwest The chief idea underlying the preparation of this volume has been to present to the people of Michigan a true account of the life and work of John D. Pierce, our first Superintendent of Public Instruction. Almost seventy years have gone since he entered upon his educational work, and more than twenty years since his death, and as yet no adequate study of his career has appeared. His memory is deserving of better treatment from the generation of to-day, and if this book shall contribute in any way to bring about even a tardy recognition of his services, its purpose will have been accomplished. It is only proper to say that this study is based almost altogether upon original material which the writers have made use of for the first time, and whatever value it may have depends in no little measure on this fact. The task of collecting, sifting, and editing the data has been a difficult one, yet one which has fully compensated for the trouble, for in many of the papers and documents yellowed by age there have been discernible the motive forces in the life of a great man. Falling as Mr. Pierce's labors in education did in the period coincident with the beginnings of our statehood, it has been thought desirable as an introduction to his life and work, to offer some preliminary observations concerning our national and local educational inheritances, as well as to sketch briefly the course of Michigan history up to the close of the Territorial days. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Law of the Public School System of the United States Our national greatness, and the permanence of our American government, are to a great extent founded in our system of public schools. In these schools pupils learn patriotism and obedience to constituted authority to an extent untaught and unpracticed in many homes. The acquirement of knowledge is ofiered in a system which only enormous funds and the painstaking endeav ors of selected instructors could make possible. As the State furnishes so it benefits. The child of today is the statesman of tomorrow. Competence is so general that no man is considered unreplaceable. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Common School Law In the second place, the authority of the teacher as a teacher, independent of that which is dele gated to him by the trustees, has been established upon a definite basis. The decision on page 140 is of great importance as fixing the relation between trustees and teachers. On the other hand, the authority of the teacher over the child has been noticeably narrowed. Such decisions as those on page 152 would probably be now impossible anywhere, and there is more and more recognition of the principle that the school is for the child, not the child for the school. Finally the general adoption of compulsory laws puts suspension and expulsion for misconduct upon a new footing, as shown on pages 207 - 210. Download or read book The Education of Handicapped School Children in Michigan Classic Reprint written by Charles Scott Berry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of Handicapped School Children in Michigan First, let us consider \the education of the partially sighted in cities large enough to have a special class before we take up the education of these pupils in the rural districts and in the smaller cities where there are not enough such children to form a special class. From the. Point of view of education, the partially sighted child is one whose vision, even after it has been corrected as far as possible by glasses, is so defective that he cannot read ordinary print at all or without injury to vision, yet is able to read large print. The classes that have. Been formed for such children in the public schools are commonly known as conservation of Vision classes or sight saving classes. The latter name is preferable. In selecting pupils for a sight saving class there evidently is little difficulty in finding the child whose vision is so defective that he cannot even with glasses read ordinary print. The problem is to discover those pupils who are able to read print of ordinary size; yet in so doing are straining their eyes. Half the pupils in the sight saving classes of Cleveland are myopes.
