Book excerpt: A Vital Ministry describes the situation of the ‘post-millennium’ generation of the young as threatening to their human flourishing. Their economic, political and cultural context is potentially oppressive, and the education system in this country no longer seeks to provide ‘spiritual capital’ to resource the young. The special role of Church of England schools is to provide a holistic education which values the spiritual dimension, genuinely encouraging the personal and spiritual development of young people as ‘children of God’. Drawing on the testimony both of school chaplains and school students, the book argues that the chaplain’s ministry of pastoral care has a key part to play in the fostering of personal spiritual development, and that the role of the chaplain as a liturgical leader can open up the spiritual realm for students. The Church needs to take seriously this vital but neglected ministry, the book concludes, arguing for better recognition, professional support and development.

Download or read book Foundations of Chaplaincy written by Alan T. Baker and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2021-02-18 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An approachable overview of the nature, purpose, and functional roles of chaplaincy Chaplaincy is unlike any other kind of ministry. It involves working outside a church, without a congregation, usually in a secular organization. It requires ministering to those with starkly different religious convictions, many of whom may never enter a house of worship. It is, as Alan Baker writes, “ministry in motion.” Those who are embarking upon this unique and specialized call deserve equally unique and specialized guidance, and Foundations of Chaplaincy offers exactly that. Baker surveys the biblical and theological foundations of chaplaincy before enumerating four specific responsibilities and skills that define chaplaincy’s “ministry of presence”: providing, facilitating, caring, and advising. Baker’s thorough guidance on these matters is supplemented in sidebars with practical advice and anecdotes from over thirty chaplains currently serving in a variety of settings and organizations. Chaplains who serve in healthcare, the military, correctional institutions, police and fire departments, sports teams, college campuses, and corporations have essential roles to play in their respective organizations, but theirs is rarely an easy calling. With Foundations of Chaplaincy as an introduction and an ongoing reference, those called to this important vocation may be assured of having the tools they need to cultivate a strong, mission-driven pastoral identity rooted in their own theological tradition while simultaneously participating in a multi-faith team.

Book A Handbook of Chaplaincy Studies

Download or read book A Handbook of Chaplaincy Studies written by Christopher Swift and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Handbook of Chaplaincy Studies explores fundamental issues and critical questions in chaplaincy, spanning key areas of health care, the prison service, education and military chaplaincy. Leading authors and practitioners in the field present critical insight into the challenges and opportunities facing those providing professional spiritual care. From young men and women in the military and in custody, to the bedside of those experiencing life’s greatest traumas, this critical examination of the role played by the chaplain offers a fresh and informed understanding about faith and diversity in an increasingly secular society. An invaluable compendium of case-studies, academic reflection and critical enquiry, this handbook offers a fresh understanding of traditional, contemporary and innovative forms of spiritual practice as they are witnessed in the public sphere. Providing a wide-ranging appraisal of chaplaincy in an era of religious complexity and emergent spiritualities, this pioneering book is a major contribution to a relatively underdeveloped field and sets out how the phenomenon of chaplaincy can be better understood and its practice more robust and informed.

Book School Chaplaincy Embracing and Inhabiting Liminality

Download or read book School Chaplaincy Embracing and Inhabiting Liminality written by Elizabeth Barry and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this research study, the researcher set out to gain an insight into the role of chaplains concerning their work in Designated Community Colleges (DCCs) in the Republic of Ireland at a critical juncture in education. In particular, in the current climate, The Admissions (To Schools) Act 2019 and the Education Training Boards Ireland (ETBs) 'Patrons Framework on Ethos' have taken prominence in educational debates and are likely to impact the educational landscape into the future significantly. While the central focus of the research question addresses the implications for the practice of chaplaincy in multi-denominational settings and the chaplains' role in supporting the newly articulated characteristic spirit of ETB schools, other sub-questions have risen from the research question. They are considered throughout the study. These include no standardised framework or a professional body for school chaplains and the ambiguity surrounding the rationale for school chaplaincy - resulting in genuine concern about the future of chaplaincy in state schools. As a result, the research explores the following questions: the participants' perceptions and experiences of their role and their concerns for the future of chaplaincy in an increasingly secular landscape. As the knowledge to be generated is subjective, involving the participants' perceptions and experiences, the research was placed in the qualitative field. The research methodology used is a case study with questionnaires and semi-structured interviews generating the raw data. The literature review considered four key areas pertinent to the subject of this study: 1. The understanding of Ethos in an educational context. 2. Characteristic Spirit in ETB schools. 3. Historical context of chaplaincy in schools in Ireland. 4. School chaplaincy in International contexts - in particular the U.K, Scotland, and Australia. The study includes the historical background of the chaplaincy role in DCCs and maps the trajectory of how chaplaincy has evolved and what it might look like in the future. The questionnaires and interviews were coded and interrogated using Excel and the NVivo software application package. The research results provide six key themes. The results revealed the voices and experiences of eleven chaplains and eleven principals. Their testimony revealed the multi-dimensional nature of their roles, their views on the role, and revealed further challenges and concerns for the future of the role. Their concerns form part of a broader concern for the future of Religious Education, the future meaning and trajectory of the role of chaplaincy and add a rich insight into the workings of chaplaincy in DCCs in a changing landscape. This study showed that chaplains work in an increasingly contested space - and while they often inhabit a liminal status, the future and the promise of transformation are always within their reach.

Book Enlisting Faith

  • Author : Ronit Y. Stahl
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press

Download or read book Enlisting Faith written by Ronit Y. Stahl and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century ago, as the United States prepared to enter World War I, the military chaplaincy included only mainline Protestants and Catholics. Today it counts Jews, Mormons, Muslims, Christian Scientists, Buddhists, Seventh-day Adventists, Hindus, and evangelicals among its ranks. Enlisting Faith traces the uneven processes through which the military struggled with, encouraged, and regulated religious pluralism over the twentieth century. Moving from the battlefields of Europe to the jungles of Vietnam and between the forests of Civilian Conservation Corps camps and meetings in government offices, Ronit Y. Stahl reveals how the military borrowed from and battled religion. Just as the state relied on religion to sanction war and sanctify death, so too did religious groups seek recognition as American faiths. At times the state used religion to advance imperial goals. But religious citizens pushed back, challenging the state to uphold constitutional promises and moral standards. Despite the constitutional separation of church and state, the federal government authorized and managed religion in the military. The chaplaincy demonstrates how state leaders scrambled to handle the nation’s deep religious, racial, and political complexities. While officials debated which clergy could serve, what insignia they would wear, and what religions appeared on dog tags, chaplains led worship for a range of faiths, navigated questions of conscience, struggled with discrimination, and confronted untimely death. Enlisting Faith is a vivid portrayal of religious encounters, state regulation, and the trials of faith—in God and country—experienced by the millions of Americans who fought in and with the armed forces.

It covers the issues that arise in specific locations, such as college, healthcare, prison, military and the corporate sector. Chapters also examine Hindu pastoral care offered in other, 'non-chaplaincy' settings, such as LGBT centres, social justice work and environmental activism. Book A Christian Theology of Chaplaincy

Download or read book A Christian Theology of Chaplaincy written by John Caperon and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2017-09-21 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chaplaincy is a rapidly growing ministry, but one that has been the centre of little theological discussion. Focusing on understanding what chaplaincy is and how it is exercised in different contexts, this book intends to support the work of chaplains by providing a theological examination of their ministry. The chapters in this book discuss how the work of chaplains outside the structures of the Church and yet frequently carried out by ministers authorized by the Church relates to some of the key questions of how the Church understands itself in relation to the world (i.e. institutions and structures that are not part of the church), whether or not the chaplains should engage in converting non-Christians to Christianity, and how chaplaincy is carried out both from within Christianity and in a multi-faith environment. This book explores the role of chaplains and the benefits of chaplaincy as a form of ministry as well as an examination of the personal characteristics and disposition best suited to serving as a chaplain. Chaplaincy and Christian Theology considers the nature of chaplaincy in public spaces and the implications of Christian theology within this ministry. Essential reading for chaplains, students of theology, and anyone involved in Christian ministry and Christian theology.
