Book Protestant Scholasticism Essays in Reassessment

Download or read book Protestant Scholasticism Essays in Reassessment written by Carl R. Trueman and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, Protestant theology between Luther's early reforming career and the dawn of the Enlightenment has been seen in terms of decline and fall into the wastelands of rationalism and scholastic speculation. In this volume a number of scholars question such an interpretation. The editors argue that the development of Post-Reformation Protestantism can only be understood when a proper historical model of doctrinal change is adopted. This historical concern underlies the subsequent studies of theologians such as Calvin, Beza, Olevian, Baxter and the two Turrentini. The result is a significantly different reading of the development of Protestant Orthodoxy, one which both challenges the older scholarly interpretations and clichŽs about the relationship of Protestantism to, among other things, scholasticism and rationalism, and which demonstrates the fruitfulness of the new, historical approach. Contributors: D. V. N. Bagchi, David C. Steinmetz, Richard A. Muller, Frank A. James III, John L. Farthing, Lyle D. Bierma, R. Scott Clark, Donald Sinnema, Paul R. Schaefer, W. Book Scholasticism Reformed

Download or read book Scholasticism Reformed written by Maarten Wisse and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-04-16 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Festschrift celebrates Professor Willem J. van Asselt's many contributions to the study of Reformed scholasticism on the occasion of his retirement from Utrecht University. The authors argue that the resurgence of interest in scholasticism, especially in Reformed scholasticism, has in turn reformed our views of scholasticism. While most of the volume's essays contribute to the reassessment of scholasticism through relevant historical case studies or new systematic analyses of the value and validity of scholasticism for contemporary theology, some authors endeavour a critical confrontation with various aspects of this reassessment. Thus, this volume not only mirrors Van Asselt's interest in the sound historical evaluation of Reformed scholasticism and its application to contemporary philosophical theology, but also provides cutting-edge scholarship on a major development in historical theology.

Download or read book All That Is in God written by James E. Dolezal and published by Reformation Heritage Books. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unknown to many, increasing numbers of conservative evangelicals are denying basic tenets of classical Christian teaching about God, with departures occurring even among those of the Calvinistic persuasion. James E. Dolezal’s All That Is in God provides an exposition of the historic Christian position while engaging with these contemporary deviations. His convincing critique of the newer position he styles “theistic mutualism” is philosophically robust, systematically nuanced, and biblically based. It demonstrates the need to maintain the traditional viewpoint, particularly on divine simplicity, and spotlights the unfortunate implications for other important Christian doctrines—such as divine eternality and the Trinity—if it were to be abandoned. Arguing carefully and cogently that “all that is in God is God Himself,” the work is sure to stimulate debate on the issue in years to come.

Book So What s New About Scholasticism

Download or read book So What s New About Scholasticism written by Rajesh Heynickx and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-07-09 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In So What’s New about Scholasticism? thirteen international scholars gauge the extraordinary impact of a religiously inspired conceptual framework in a modern society. The essays that are brought together in this volume reveal that Neo-Thomism became part of contingent social contexts and varying intellectual domains. Rather than an ecclesiastic project of like-minded believers, Neo-Thomism was put into place as a source of inspiration for various concepts of modernization and progress. This volume reconstructs how Neo-Thomism sought to resolve disparities, annul contradictions and reconcile incongruent, new developments. It asks the question why Neo-Thomist ideas and arguments were put into play and how they were transferred across various scientific disciplines and artistic media, growing into one of the most influential master-narratives of the twentieth century. Edward Baring, Dries Bosschaert, James Chappel, Adi Efal-Lautenschläger, Rajesh Heynickx, Sigrid Leyssen, Christopher Morrissey, Annette Mülberger, Jaume Navarro, Herman Paul, Karim Schelkens, Wim Weymans and John Carter Wood reconstruct a bewildering, yet decipherable thought-structure that has left a deep mark on twentieth century politics, philosophy, science and religion.

Book Perfect Will Theology

Download or read book Perfect Will Theology written by J. Martin Bac and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book revisits four early-modern debates of Reformed theology concerning the will of God. Reformed scholasticism advocated a particular relationship between divine knowledge, will, and power, which was altered by Jesuits, Remonstrants, Descartes, and Spinoza. In all these debates modal categories like contingency and necessity play a prominent part. Therefore, these positions are evaluated with the help of modern modal logic including possible world semantics. The final part of this study presents a systematic defense of the Reformed position, which has been charged of theological determinism and of making God the author of sin. In modern terms, therefore, the relation of divine and human freedom and the problem of evil are discussed.

Book Calvinism and the Amyraut Heresy

Download or read book Calvinism and the Amyraut Heresy written by Brian G. Armstrong and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-05-07 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To any reader who has studied Calvin, then turned to the so-called Calvinist tradition, the absence of Calvin's name and, more importantly, of some of his characteristic emphases from the writings of the majority of the theologians who took his name is a striking fact. That some profound transformation of Calvin's ideas, despite the ubiquity of the 'Institutio', took place in the generation after his death is incontrovertible. What has long passed, for example, as the Calvinist doctrine of predestination, whether among its proponents or opponents, is not what one reads in Calvin himself. This work does much to trace the complex process whereby a scholastic, metaphysical edifice replaced the dynamic, experiential, historically, and exegetically grounded faith enunciated by Calvin himself. Armstrong writes in his Introduction, It is hoped, then, that this study will both provide an introduction to the intellectual trends within French Calvinism, to the teaching of Amyraut and the relation of his thought to that of Calvin, and furnish an insight into the removal of orthodox Calvinist thought from Calvin into a narrower, more defensive, more intolerant, and more impervious system. Armstrong's study is a full, careful, and engrossing one. It is to be commended not only to readers of theological interest, but to all persons interested in intellectual history, and especially to Christians of the Reformed tradition who are seeking to understand their intellectual and spiritual roots. from a review by F. L. Battles, Theology Today
