Book Theories of Reading Development

Download or read book Theories of Reading Development written by Kate Cain and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of printed words to capture language is one of the most remarkable inventions of humankind, and learning to read them is one of the most remarkable achievements of individuals. In recent decades, how we learn to read and understand printed text has been studied intensely in genetics, education, psychology, and cognitive science, and both the volume of research papers and breadth of the topics they examine have increased exponentially. Theories of Reading Development collects within a single volume state-of-the-art descriptions of important theories of reading development and disabilities. The included chapters focus on multiple aspects of reading development and are written by leading experts in the field. Each chapter is an independent theoretical review of the topic to which the authors have made a significant contribution and can be enjoyed on its own, or in relation to others in the book. The volume is written for professionals, graduate students, and researchers in education, psychology, and cognitive neuroscience. It can be used either as a core or as a supplementary text in senior undergraduate and graduate education and psychology courses focusing on reading development.

Book Reading Development in a Second Language

Download or read book Reading Development in a Second Language written by Elizabeth Buchter Bernhardt and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1991 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Berhardt advocates more principled research and instruction in second language literacy. This book is a personal statement based on her own theory and research as well as that of others. It provides a comprehensive review of what is known about the second language reading process based on principles drawn from the synthesis of empirical data. The discussion is set forth from four main perspectives: an examination of theoretical models of the reading process and their application to second language contexts; a synthesis of empirical data of second language reading research from 1973 to 1989; descriptions of reader-based interactions with second language texts; and curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

Book Theoretical Issues in Reading Comprehension

Download or read book Theoretical Issues in Reading Comprehension written by Rand J. Spiro and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research in cognitive psychology, linguistics, and artificial intelligence – the three disciplines that have the most direct application to an understanding of the mental processes in reading – is presented in this multilevel work, originally published in 1980, that attempts to provide a systematic and scientific basis for understanding and building a comprehensive theory of reading comprehension. The major focus is on understanding the processes involved in the comprehension of written text. Underlying most of the contributions is the assumption that skilled reading comprehension requires a coordination of text with context in a way that goes far beyond simply chaining together the meanings of a string of decoded words. The topics discussed are divided into five general areas: Global Issues; Text Structure; Language, Knowledge of the World, and Inference; Effects of Prior Language Experience; and Comprehension Strategies and Facilitators, and represent a broad base of methodology and data that should be of interest not only to those concerned with the reading process, but also to basic science researchers in psychology, linguistics, artificial intelligence, and related disciplines.

Book Activating ESL Students Schemata to Improve Reading Comprehension

Download or read book Activating ESL Students Schemata to Improve Reading Comprehension written by Chin-Yi Chen and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this thesis is to examine the effect that background knowledge has on memory and comprehension of reading passages. In addition, reading comprehension occurs when readers activate existing knowledge so that new ideas can be incorporated in their cognitive structure. The thesis is divided into four main parts. The first part introduces the educational system in Taiwan and Taiwanese students' problems in reading English. The second part is a review of literature concerning schema functions and types. Also, in the schema-theoretic views of reading, the process of comprehension, script and memory are interpreted. Coady's and Goodman's psycholinguistic views of reading are introduced. The third part offers classroom applications, materials, and discussion concerning the importance of activating students' schemata or (prior knowledge) and suggests some schema-inducing methods and strategies to improve reading comprehension. Finally, a curriculum proposed for the teaching of Russell Freedman's biography, Eleanor Roosevelt: A Life of Discovery (1993) is appended. The daily lesson plans suggest ways to activate students' background knowledge to achieve reading comprehension competence"--Document.

Book Language as Discourse

Download or read book Language as Discourse written by Michael Mccarthy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-22 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Michael McCarthy and Ronald Carter describe the discoursal properties of language and demonstrate what insights this approach can offer to the student and teacher of language. The authors examine the relationship between complete texts, both spoken and written, and the social and cultural contexts in which they function. They argue that the functions of language are often best understood in a discoursal environment and that exploring language in context compels us to revise commonly-held understandings about the forms and meanings of language. In so doing, the authors argue the need for language teachers, syllabus planners and curriculum organisers to give greater attention to language as discourse.

Book Cognitive Psychology and Instruction

Download or read book Cognitive Psychology and Instruction written by Alan Lesgold and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sipke D. Fokkema Amsterdam, Free University From June 13th - 17th, 1977 the NATO International Conference on Cognitive Psychology and Instruction, organized by the editors of this volume, took place at the Free University of Amsterdam. During this period approximately 150 psychologists representing 15 countries assembled for an exchange of scientific experiences and ideas. The broad aim of the conference, as indicated by its title, was to explore the extent to which theoretical and methodological developments in cognitive psychology might provide useful knowledge with regard to the design and management of instruction. From a great variety of submitted papers the organizers attempted to select those that represented major problem areas being scientifically studied in several countries. For the organization of this book we chose to categorize the contributions according to the following general areas: I. Learning II. Comprehension and Information Structure III. Perceptual and Memory Processes in Reading IV. Problem Solving and Components of Intelligence V. Cognitive Development VI. Approaches to Instruction The final paper in the volume is an extensive review and summary by Glaser, Pellegrino, and Lesgold, that examines the state Qf cognitive psychology (mainly as reflected in the contributions in this volume) with regard to instructional purposes. Each of the sections of the book also begins with a brief overview of the specific topics considered by the individual contributors within that section.
