Book Scenes From a Suburban Upbringing

Download or read book Scenes From a Suburban Upbringing written by Owen Hannon and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suburbia was doomed from the beginning. Post-war American society prompted residents to search for normalcy and security in "picture-perfect" housing, each blade of grass precisely cut and each home identical to the next. It was a desperate attempt to hide the scars of war and depression. But, without sorrow or darkness, it is impossible for rectitude to illuminate the hollows of our hearts. Each flawless tree branch and artfully placed shingle is a one-way ticket to an unnatural, apathetic, joyless world, spiraling closer and closer to the horror and hardship you tried to escape from. It is like using duct tape on a suppurating lesion. Will it stop the dripping? Yes. But what happens when you try to rip the tape off? The wound is worse than it was before. This poetry chapbook investigates the irony of suburbia and its inherent malice, through the eyes of the children growing up in it. Some of the poems are inspired by my life, but others are entirely fictional, told through the eyes of imaginary characters that probably exist somewhere in the world.

Book excerpt: The expansion of the suburban environment is a fascinating cultural development. In fact, the United States is primarily a suburban nation, with far more Americans living in the suburbs that in either urban or rural areas. Why were suburbs created to begin with? How do we define them? Are they really the promised land of the American middle class? The concept of space and how we create it is a concept that is receiving a great deal of academic attention, but no one has looked carefully at the suburban landscape through the lens of fiction and of film.

Book excerpt: For decades the suburbs have been where art happens despite: despite the conformity, the emptiness, the sameness. Time and again, the story is one of gems formed under pressure and that resentment of the suburbs is the key ingredient for creative transcendence. But what if, contrary to that, the suburb has actually been an incubator for distinctly American art, as positively and as surely as in any other cultural hothouse? Mixing personal experience, cultural reportage, and history while rejecting clichés and pieties and these essays stretch across the country in an effort to show that this uniquely American milieu deserves another look.

After she left the city and moved to the suburbs, she found her place quickly with neighbors Liz, Jess, and Melissa, snarking together from the outskirts of the PTA crowd. One night during their monthly wine get-together, the crew concoct a plan for a clubhouse She Shed in Liz’s backyard—a space for just them, no spouses or kids allowed. But the night after they christen the She Shed, things start to feel . . . off. They didn’t expect Liz’s little home-improvement project to release a demonic force that turns their quiet enclave into something out of a nightmare. And that’s before the homeowners’ association gets wind of it. Even the calmest moms can’t justify the strange burn marks, self-moving dolls, and horrible smells surrounding their possessed friend, Liz. Together, Amy, Jess, and Melissa must fight the evil spirit to save Liz and the neighborhood . . . before the suburbs go completely to hell.
