Book excerpt: The adaptability of Longfellow's poems to musical illustration has long been recognized, and it is safe to say that no poet of the English language, not even excepting Tennyson, has been so much drawn upon by the composers. Two operas, many cantatas, part songs, duets, and songs innumerable, are found on the catalogues of the music publishers. The "Golden Legend" has formed the basis of four cantatas: one by Franz Liszt, dealing with the prologue only, under the title, "The Bells of Strasburg Cathedral"; another by H. E. Hodson, originally published by Novello, Ewer & Co.; a third by Dudley Buck, which took the 91,000 prize for the best composition, offered by the Cincinnati Festival of 1880; and the fourth by Arthur Sullivan, composed for and produced at the Music Festival at Leeds, England, last October. The whole poem is, of course, too long, and, in a great degree, unfitted for music in any practical case, so texts for the composer have to be specially prepared. For Mr. Buck's cantata, the text was prepared by the composer himself, and consists of various scenes from the poem, not dramatically connected. Indeed, the correct title of the cantata is, "Scenes from Longfellow's 'Golden Legend' "; but in Sullivan's case, a connected and dramatic story was constructed by Mr. Joseph Bennett, an English litterateur, who has had much experience in this work. .Ha used the poet's own language, but compressed .the story so as to get it into practicable shape for an evening. Both composers treat the prologue entire, for upon this prologue depends the ethical significance of the poem. Not having heard either work performed, we confine our remarks to a perusal of the piano score alone, and it might be that on a hearing some of onr opinions might be changed, for it often happens that effects that look well in print do not come out in hearing; and, on the other hand, orchestral combinations that are extremely effective in performance, are not indicated at all, or very faintly, on the printed vocal and piano score. -Frank Leslie's Sunday Magazine, Volume 21

Book A Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Companion

Download or read book A Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Companion written by Robert L. Gale and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-12-30 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best remembered today as the author of The Song of Hiawatha, Longfellow continues to be one of the most popular poets in American literary history. This book is a guide to his life and writings. A brief introductory essay overviews Longfellow's life and accomplishments. A chronology then summarizes the chief events in his career. Hundreds of alphabetically arranged entries follow, discussing individual poems, his other writings, his family members and professional associates, and topics related to his life and literary achievements. Entries list works for further reading, and the volume closes with a selected, general bibliography. Longfellow has also enjoyed fame worldwide; in England, his poems outsold those of Browning and Tennyson. In addition to being a gifted poet, Longfellow had a brilliant career as a college professor. He wrote numerous critical works and translations, and was also a leading American Dante scholar. He frequently wrote letters, and his admirers often sought his advice on personal and professional matters.

Book A Companion to the Works of Hartmann Von Aue

Download or read book A Companion to the Works of Hartmann Von Aue written by Francis G. Gentry and published by Camden House. This book was released on 2005 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the course of perhaps twenty-five years of creative productivity (ca. 1180-ca. 1205), Hartmann von Aue authored a dispute about love between the body and the heart, Die Klage (ca. 1180-85), numerous songs of courtly love, crusading songs, and most likely took part in a Crusade himself." "The essays in this volume, written by scholars from North America and Europe, offer insight into many aspects of Hartmann's oeuvre, including the medieval and modern visual and literary reception of his works. The volume also offers considerations of Hartmann and Chretien; Hartmann's putative theological background and the influence of the Bible on his tales; the reflection of his medical knowledge in Der arme Heinrich and Iwein; and a complete survey of his lyric production. Newer avenues of research are also presented, with essays on issues of gender and on the role of pain as a constitutive part of the courtly experience."--Jacket.
