Book excerpt: Macroteleia Westwood, 1835 (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae s. l.) is a cosmopolitan genus in the subfamily Scelioninae, comprising about 131 described species worldwide. Although Macroteleia are found on every continent except Antarctica, they are centred in the tropics and subtropics. In the past century since Kieffer?s comprehensive study of this genus, several regional revisions have done for the New World, Australia, Vietnam and the Palearctic region. In Asia, Macroteleia has been recorded from the Philippines, Borneo, Mongolia, India, Vietnam, Japan, Israel, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and China, but no species have been formally recorded from China. This monograph includes identification of seven new species and ten Chinese new record, and establishment of one new stat and five new synonyms. Key, descriptions and illustrations of all Chinese species are provided. The results of this monograph clarify some taxonomic confusion, richen the geographical distributions of Macroteleia in China, and provide facilities for further research of Macroteleia from China and Vietnam.

Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling official companion book to the Emmy® Award-winning HBO® miniseries. Look for The Pacific miniseries, now available to stream on Netflix! Between America's retreat from China in late November 1941 and the moment General MacArthur's airplane touched down on the Japanese mainland in August of 1945, five men connected by happenstance fought the key battles of the war against Japan. From the debacle in Bataan, to the miracle at Midway and the relentless vortex of Guadalcanal, their solemn oaths to their country later led one to the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot and the others to the coral strongholds of Peleliu, the black terraces of Iwo Jima and the killing fields of Okinawa, until at last the survivors enjoyed a triumphant, yet uneasy, return home. In The Pacific, Hugh Ambrose focuses on the real-life stories of five men who put their lives on the line for our country. To deepen the story revealed in the HBO® miniseries and go beyond it, the book dares to chart a great ocean of enmity known as the Pacific and the brave men who fought.

Book Fundamentals of Photon Physics

Download or read book Fundamentals of Photon Physics written by Ole Keller and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-10-07 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The photon, an abstract concept belonging to a global vacuum, only manifests itself during interaction with matter. Fundamentals of Photon Physics describes the richly faceted, basic theory of photon-matter interaction, selecting a wide number of topics. Together with the author’s book Light -- The Physics of the Photon (CRC, 2014), both written on a scholarly level, the reader is given a comprehensive exposition of photon wave mechanics, quantum optics and quantum electrodynamics (QED). Divided into 10 parts, the book begins by exploring the relation between photon wave mechanics and quantum field theory. It then describes the theories of zero- and one-photon states and that of bi-photons. After discussing conservation laws, Lagrangian formulations, geometric phase and topology, the author turns towards the theory of photon scattering, emphasizing a density matrix operator approach and the role of microscopic extinction theorems. The book next focuses on mesoscopic QED, devoting particular attention to collective jellium excitations and photon-spin interactions. Special attention is given to the basics of the photon-magnon interaction and nonlinear superconductor electrodynamics, including the nonlinear Meissner rectification phenomenon, before studying the theory of transverse photons tied to (dressing) massive particles. The last three parts take the reader on a journey to topics usually not treated in books on photon- matter interaction. Beginning with photons in curved space-time structures and in spatially curved media, e.g. Möbius bands, the author discusses the extension of QED to the electro-weak interaction at an introductory level. Fundamentals of Photon Physics ends with the establishment of the set of isovector Maxwell equations in non-Abelian SO(3) gauge theory, leading to the celebrated hedgehog monopole model. Ole Keller is professor emeritus of theoretical physics at Aalborg University, Denmark. He earned his Licentiate (∼ PhD) degree in semiconductor physics from the Danish Technical University in Copenhagen in 1972, and the Doctor of Science degree from the University of Aarhus (1996). In 1989 he was appointed as the first professor in physics at Aalborg University by Margrethe Den Anden, queen of Denmark. The same year he was admitted to Kraks Blaa Bog, a prestigious Danish biographical dictionary which (citatum) ”Includes men and women, whose life story could have an interest for a wider public”. He is a fellow of the Optical Society of America. He has written the books entitled Quantum Theory of Near-Field Electrodynamics (Springer, 2011) and LIGHT - The Physics of the Photon (CRC, 2014), as well as the monographs Local Fields in the Electrodynamics of Mesoscopic Media (Physics Reports, 1996) and On the Theory of Spatial Localization of Photons (Physics Reports, 2005). He is the editor of the books Nonlinear Optics in Solids (Springer, 1990), Studies in Classical and Quantum Nonlinear Optics (Nova Science, 1995) and Notions and Perspectives of Nonlinear Optics (World Scientific, 1996). In recent years he has carried out theoretical research in fundamental photon physics, microscopic few-photon diffraction, mesoscopic and Möbius band electrodynamics, and studied magnetic monopole theory based on QED and the isovector Maxwell equations in non-Abelian gauge symmetry.

Book Handbook of Molecular Microbial Ecology I

Download or read book Handbook of Molecular Microbial Ecology I written by Frans J. de Bruijn and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-10-14 with total page 1155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The premiere two-volume reference on revelations from studying complex microbial communities in many distinct habitats Metagenomics is an emerging field that has changed the way microbiologists study microorganisms. It involves the genomic analysis of microorganisms by extraction and cloning of DNA from a group of microorganisms, or the direct use of the purified DNA or RNA for sequencing, which allows scientists to bypass the usual protocol of isolating and culturing individual microbial species. This method is now used in laboratories across the globe to study microorganism diversity and for isolating novel medical and industrial compounds. Handbook of Molecular Microbial Ecology is the first comprehensive two-volume reference to cover unculturable microorganisms in a large variety of habitats, which could not previously have been analyzed without metagenomic methodology. It features review articles as well as a large number of case studies, based largely on original publications and written by international experts. This first volume, Metagenomics and Complementary Approaches, covers such topics as: Background information on DNA reassociation and use of 16 rRNA and other DNA fingerprinting approaches Species designation in microbiology Metagenomics: Introduction to the basic tools with examples Consortia and databases Bioinformatics Computer-assisted analysis Complementary approaches—microarrays, metatranscriptomics, metaproteomics, metabolomics, and single cell analysis A special feature of this volume is the highlighting of the databases and computer programs used in each study; they are listed along with their sites in order to facilitate the computer-assisted analysis of the vast amount of data generated by metagenomic studies. Handbook of Molecular Microbial Ecology I is an invaluable reference for researchers in metagenomics, microbiology, and environmental microbiology; those working on the Human Microbiome Project; microbial geneticists; molecular microbial ecologists; and professionals in molecular microbiology and bioinformatics.

  • ISBN : 3039289535
  • Pages : 386 pages

Download or read book Antiviral Agents written by Catherine Adamson and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-01-21 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antiviral agents are used for the treatment of viral diseases. Antiviral drugs have been successfully developed and used clinically for a limited number of important human viral diseases notably caused by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), herpes, and influenza viruses. Despite the successes of these antiviral drugs, issues with drug resistance and toxicity remain challenging. These challenges are driving research to identify new drug candidates and to investigate novel drug targets to develop new mechanistic drug classes. Antiviral agents are not available against many viruses that cause human disease and economic burdens; in particular, the development of antiviral agents against emerging, re-emerging, and neglected viruses is increasingly becoming a priority. This book includes six review articles that discuss new antiviral strategies. The reviews either discuss advances relating to a specific virus or new therapeutic targets and approaches. The book includes 15 original research articles reporting new antiviral agents against a variety of clinically and economically important viruses and studies into the prevalence or acquisition of drug resistance. Overall, this book is an exciting collection of new research and ideas relating to the development of antiviral agents.

Download or read book Classical Swine Fever written by Fun-In Wang and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-01-19 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the “disease aspects” of classical swine fever (CSF). The epidemiological pattern of the reemergence of CSF from wild boars and its spread to neighboring domestic pigs provides useful information for policy makers. The recent advances in diagnostics and vaccines and how each type of vaccine should be appropriately used in various field situations provide useful information for practicing veterinarians and laboratory scientists, for example, whether the vaccine virus attenuated enough to not cross the placenta to avoid sequelae, how innocuous samples like serum should be cautiously treated to avoid risk of virus spread, how various genotypes of the CSF virus evolve and compete to survive in the field, and how the CSF virus molecularly manipulates normal cell biological processes for its own advantage to survive. Phylogenetic analyses help in tracing the origin of the CSF virus responsible for each outbreak. Overall, readers should be impressed by the capabilities of CFS in pigs. We hope that this book can be a useful reference for all colleagues, whether in CSF-free or CSF-affected parts of the world.

Book Microbial Degradation of Pesticides

Download or read book Microbial Degradation of Pesticides written by Shaohua Chen and published by Scientific Research Publishing, Inc. USA. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extensive use of pesticides, their disposal and consequent presence in various environments are of great concern regarding their ecotoxicological effect on the organisms of different trophic levels. Such widespread use results in an increased concentration of these compounds in water, sediments and soils. Chemical pesticides undergo many different pathways once they enter the environment, including transformation/degradation, sorption-desorption, volatilization, uptake by plants, runoff into surface waters and transport into groundwater. Transformation or degradation is one of the key processes that governs the environmental fate and transport of chemical pesticides, which also comprises different processes including abiotic degradation and biodegradation. During these processes, chemical pesticides are transformed into the degradation products or are completely mineralized to a carbon field. Although abiotic degradation plays a role in many cases, the biodegradation of chemical pesticides by microorganisms is usually the most important and dominant process.
