Book The Anatomy of the Human Embryo

Download or read book The Anatomy of the Human Embryo written by Gerd Steding and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2009 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present anatomical atlas concentrates on the early weeks of prenatal development of the human embryo. It comprises more than 800 scanning electron-microscopic pictures of specimens of exclusively human embryos. The three-dimensional appearing illustrations show the development of the external form of the face, neck, trunk and limbs. Besides, the brain and the viscera of the head, neck, thorax, abdomen and pelvis all dissected into layers are represented in their position and spatial form. The juxtaposition of pictures of temporally close developmental stages reveals the changes in the form of the organs. Photographs of the same organic system are usually shown at the same magnification and clearly demonstrate the growth process. Simple outline drawings provided with the principal nomenclature facilitate the orientation within the specimens. A brief introduction to each chapter explains the most significant developmental steps depicted. This atlas is of great interest not only to anatomists, embryologists, histologists and developmental biologists, but also to biologists, biochemists and geneticists. Moreover, it serves as a valuable reference book for clinicians such as gynecologists, obstetricians, pediatric surgeons and pediatric cardiologists.

  • Pages : 713 pages

Download or read book Electron Microscopy written by Sydney S. Breese and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifth International Congress for Electron Microscopy, Volume 2: Biology focuses on the processes, methodologies, approaches, and principles involved in electron microscopy. The selection takes a look at some aspects of freeze-substitution in electron microscopy; fixatives for cytological and cytochemical studies; intramembranous localization of succinic dehydrogenase using tetranitro-blue tetrazolium; and evaluation of different methods of auto-radiography in electron microscopy. The book then examines the fixation of nuclear structures by unbuffered solutions of osmium tetroxide in slightly acid distilled water; some electron microscope observations on the contraction mechanism in vertebrate smooth muscle; arrangement of myofilaments in the oblique-striated muscles; and electron microscopic observations of cat splenic nerve fibers after fixation by freeze-drying. The text ponders on differentiation of oligodendroglia from migratory spongioblasts; morphological changes in the Purkinje-cells after orthostatic collapse; electron microscopic observations of the development of the neuroblast in the rabbit embryo; electron microscopic observations on the development of blood vessels in the nervous system of the rabbit embryo; and simple methods for nucleic acid and acid mucopolysaccharide localization in electron micrographs. The selection is a valuable source of data for researchers interested in electron microscopy.

Book Scanning Electron Microscopy in BIOLOGY

Download or read book Scanning Electron Microscopy in BIOLOGY written by R.G. Kessel and published by Springer. This book was released on 1976-06 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the continuing quest to explore structure and to relate struc tural organization to functional significance, the scientist has developed a vast array of microscopes. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) represents a recent and important advance in the development of useful tools for investigating the structural organization of matter. Recent progress in both technology and methodology has resulted in numerous biological publications in which the SEM has been utilized exclusively or in connection with other types of microscopes to reveal surface as well as intracellular details in plant and animal tissues and organs. Because of the resolution and depth of focus presented in the SEM photograph when compared, for example, with that in the light microscope photographs, images recorded with the SEM have widely circulated in newspapers, periodicals and scientific journals in recent times. Considering the utility and present status of scanning electron microscopy, it seemed to us to be a particularly appropriate time to assemble a text-atlas dealing with biological applications of scanning electron microscopy so that such information might be presented to the student and to others not yet familiar with its capabilities in teaching and research. The major goal of this book, therefore, has been to assemble material that would be useful to those students beginning their study of botany or zoo logy, as well as to beginning medical students and students in advanced biology courses.
