Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scandinavia: A Political History of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, From 1513 to 1900 Naturally, in writing a history Of Scandinavia, I have drawn, for the most part, from native sources. But, occasion ally, I have found it necessary to resort to Slavonic authorities to bridge over gaps or to reconcile contradictions. Thus the Polish Wars of Gustavus II and Charles X have been studied from the Polish as well as from the Swedish point of view; and for the wow understanding of the Great Northern War I am not a little indebted to the later volumes of Solovev's great Istoriya Rossii. Swedish and Danish documents are, of course, mutually supplementary and corrective. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Nationalism and Democracy in the Welfare State

Download or read book Nationalism and Democracy in the Welfare State written by Kettunen, Pauli and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2022-01-11 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multidisciplinary book unpacks and outlines the contested roles of nationalism and democracy in the formation and transformation of welfare-state institutions and ideologies. At a time when neo-liberal, post-national and nationalist visions alike have challenged democratic welfare nationalism, the book offers a transnational historical perspective to the political dynamics of current changes. While particularly focusing on Nordic countries, often seen as the quintessential ‘models’ of the welfare state, the book collectively sheds light on the ‘history of the present’ of nation states bearing the character of a welfare state.

Book Aggressive and Violent Peasant Elites in the Nordic Countries C 1500 1700

Download or read book Aggressive and Violent Peasant Elites in the Nordic Countries C 1500 1700 written by Ulla Koskinen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-28 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the forms that the aggression and violence of peasant elites could take in early modern Fennoscandia, and their role within society. The contributors highlight the social stratification, inner divisions, contradictions and conflicts of the peasant communities, but also pay attention to the elite as leaders of resistance against the authorities. With the formation of more centralised states, the elites’ status and room for agency diminished, but regional and temporal variations were great in this relatively drawn-out process, and there still remained several favourable contexts for their agency. Even though the peasant elite was not a homogenous entity, the chapters in this collection present us one uniting feature – the peasant elites’ tendency to assert themselves with an active and aggressive agency, even if this led to very different outcomes.

Book The History of Iceland

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gunnar Karlsson
  • Publisher : U of Minnesota Press
  • Release : 2000
  • ISBN : 9780816635894
  • Pages : 436 pages

Download or read book The History of Iceland written by Gunnar Karlsson and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iceland is unique among European societies in having been founded as late as the Viking Age and in having copious written and archaeological sources about its origin. Gunnar Karlsson, that country's premier historian, chronicles the age of the Sagas, consulting them to describe an era without a monarch or central authority. Equating this prosperous time with the golden age of antiquity in world history, Karlsson then marks a correspondence between the Dark Ages of Europe and Iceland's "dreary period", which started with the loss of political independence in the late thirteenth century and culminated with an epoch of poverty and humility, especially during the early Modern Age. Iceland's renaissance came about with the successful struggle for independence in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and with the industrial and technical modernization of the first half of the twentieth century. Karlsson describes the rise of nationalism as Iceland's mostly poor peasants set about breaking with Denmark, and he shows how Iceland in the twentieth century slowly caught up economically with its European neighbors.
