This book was released on 1993 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some preliminary work has been done to develop potential cold scale model designs to simulate the bed hydrodynamics of the American Electric Power Tidd pressurized bubbling fluidized bed combustor. The first design is based on the full set of scaling parameters presented in Equation (1), the second design was developed using the simplified set of scaling parameters given in Equation (2). The first design is roughly a 1:1 representation of a section of the core of the Tidd bed combustor. The additional flexibility provided by the simplified set of scaling parameters is particularly useful for developing experimental models of pressurized fluidized bed combustors where the full set of scaling relationships does not provide any reduction in the size of the models. Both the full and the simplified set of scaling relationships have been verified for applications to circulating fluidized bed combustors operating at atmospheric pressure. Currently there is a interest in fluidized bed combustors which operate at elevated pressures ((approximately)12 atm) for combined-cycle applications. One of the primary goals of this stud r is to verify both the till set and the simplified set of scaling relationships for applications to pressurized bubbling fluidized bed combustors.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides a summary of the technical progress made during the third quarter of the first budget period on Cooperative Agreement No. DE-FC21-92MC29264, ''Scaling of Pressurized Beds.'' Significant progress has been made on the construction of the MIT cold scale model of the Tidd pressurized bubbling fluidized bed combustor. As discussed in the Continuation Application for Cooperative Agreement No. DE-FC21-92MC29264, the final design is a 4:1 scale model of the Tidd combustor based on the simplified set of scaling laws. The model is roughly 8 feet high and has a cross section of 1.5 ft. x 2.8 ft. The cold model design captures 11ft-2in. of the 14ft width and 6ft of the 23ft depth of the Tidd bed along with the full height. The experimental apparatus design consists of four major components: Instrumentation and data acquisition; Fluidized bed; Particle separation, resupply, filtration equipment; and Piping and support structure. Currently, construction of the cold bed is nearly complete. The only work remaining on the bed itself is the construction and installation of the scaled tube bundle, and completion of the joint between the inlet plenum, the distributor plate, and the particle bed.

Book Scaling of Pressurized Fluidized Beds Quarterly Report January March 1994

Download or read book Scaling of Pressurized Fluidized Beds Quarterly Report January March 1994 written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Construction and installation of the quarter-scale cold model of the Tidd pressurized bubbling bed combustor is complete. The cyclone and filter box have been installed, and the bed is fully instrumented. A data acquisition system has been set up to obtain time-varying pressure measurements from the cold model. Additional software to reduce orifice plate pressure drop measurements into flows, was completed. The capability to calculate the power spectral density (PSD) and probability density function (PDF) for the pressure fluctuation data has also been established. The last major work item remaining before data can be obtained from the model is to segregate the cold bed particles to obtain the required mean particle diameter and size distribution. As mentioned in the last quarterly report, a linear low-density polyethylene produced by Union Carbide was chosen as the cold bed material. Union Carbide distributes the granular polyethylene in 1200 lb{sub m} boxes. The large volume of particles makes the use of standard laboratory sieving methods impractical. We are currently attempting to segregate the particles by fluidizing them in the cold model. Different size particles will be carried out of the bed at different superficial velocities depending on their terminal velocities. The elutriated particles can then be collected using the cyclone separator.

Book excerpt: Pressurized fluidized bed combustion (PFBC) is one of the newest of the coal-based generation technologies available commercially. This authoritative volume contains an excellent balance of the theoretical and practical aspects of PFBC technology, including economics, the fundamental theory of plant design and sorbent characterization, using the results obtained from a wide range of pilot-scale and full-scale demonstration units

Book THE SCALE UP OF LARGE PRESSURIZED FLUIDIZED BEDS FOR ADVANCED COAL FIRED PROCESSES

Download or read book THE SCALE UP OF LARGE PRESSURIZED FLUIDIZED BEDS FOR ADVANCED COAL FIRED PROCESSES written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pressurized fluidization is a promising new technology for the clean and efficient combustion of coal. Its principle is to operate a coal combustor at high inlet gas velocity to increase the flow of reactants, at an elevated pressure to raise the overall efficiency of the process. Unfortunately, commercialization of large pressurized fluidized beds is inhibited by uncertainties in scaling up units from the current pilot plant levels. In this context, our objective is to conduct a study of the fluid dynamics and solid capture of a large pressurized coal-fired unit. The idea is to employ dimensional similitude to simulate in a cold laboratory model the flow in a Pressurized Circulating Fluid Bed ''Pyrolyzer, '' which is part of a High Performance Power System (HIPPS) developed by Foster Wheeler Development Corporation (FWDC) under the DOE's Combustion 2000 program.

Book Fluidization Solids Handling and Processing

Download or read book Fluidization Solids Handling and Processing written by Wen-Ching Yang and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1998-12-31 with total page 909 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, Fluidization, Solids Handling, and Processing, is the first of a series of volumes on "Particle Technology". Particles are important products of chemical process industries spanning the basic and specialty chemicals, agricultural products, pharmaceuticals, paints, dyestuffs and pigments, cement, ceramics, and electronic materials. Solids handling and processing technologies are thus essential to the operation and competitiveness of these industries. Fluidization technology is employed not only in chemical production, it also is applied in coal gasification and combustion for power generation, mineral processing, food processing, soil washing and other related waste treatment, environmental remediation, and resource recovery processes. The FCC (Fluid Catalytic Cracking) technology commonly employed in the modern petroleum refineries is also based on fluidization principles.

Book An Investigation of Fluidized Bed Scaling Relationships

Download or read book An Investigation of Fluidized Bed Scaling Relationships written by Joel Raymond Schroeder and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this research is to validate fluidized bed scaling relationships using spectral analysis of pressure fluctuations. Static pressure fluctuations are measured in two cold bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) models, a bubbling fluidized bed combustor, and a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) model. A visual comparison of the pressure fluctuation spectral analysis is used to confirm similitude between fluidized beds. The Bode and power spectral density plots of BFB models simulating a BFB combustor do not provide conclusive evidence of similitude between the beds. An argument is presented to relax the ratio of bed diameter and particle diameter when scaling fluidized beds of sufficient bed diameter, thus allowing much greater freedom when scaling fluidized beds than previous methods. A sensitivity study is conducted to investigate the importance of the independent fluidized bed operation parameters. In addition, the effect of L-valve height on L-valve solids flow rate and the effect of the coefficient of restitution of the top plate and fluidizing particles on mass flux are examined.
