Book Scaling Fractals and Wavelets

Download or read book Scaling Fractals and Wavelets written by Patrice Abry and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scaling is a mathematical transformation that enlarges or diminishes objects. The technique is used in a variety of areas, including finance and image processing. This book is organized around the notions of scaling phenomena and scale invariance. The various stochastic models commonly used to describe scaling — self-similarity, long-range dependence and multi-fractals — are introduced. These models are compared and related to one another. Next, fractional integration, a mathematical tool closely related to the notion of scale invariance, is discussed, and stochastic processes with prescribed scaling properties (self-similar processes, locally self-similar processes, fractionally filtered processes, iterated function systems) are defined. A number of applications where the scaling paradigm proved fruitful are detailed: image processing, financial and stock market fluctuations, geophysics, scale relativity, and fractal time-space.

Book Wavelets Vibrations and Scalings

Download or read book Wavelets Vibrations and Scalings written by Yves Meyer and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physicists and mathematicians are intensely studying fractal sets of fractal curves. Mandelbrot advocated modeling of real-life signals by fractal or multifractal functions. One example is fractional Brownian motion, where large-scale behavior is related to a corresponding infrared divergence. Self-similarities and scaling laws play a key role in this new area. There is a widely accepted belief that wavelet analysis should provide the best available tool to unveil such scaling laws. And orthonormal wavelet bases are the only existing bases which are structurally invariant through dyadic dilati.

Book excerpt: This book presents the mathematics of wavelet theory and its applications in a broader sense, comprising entropy encoding, lifting scheme, matrix factorization, and fractals. It also encompasses image compression examples using wavelet transform and includes the principal component analysis which is a hot topic on data dimension reduction in machine learning.Readers will find equal coverage on the following three themes:The book entails a varied choice of diverse interdisciplinary themes. While the topics can be found in various parts of the pure and applied literature, this book fulfills the need for an accessible presentation which cuts across the fields. As the target audience is wide-ranging, a detailed and systematic discussion of issues involving infinite dimensions and Hilbert space is presented in later chapters on wavelets, transform theory and, entropy encoding and probability. For the problems addressed there, the case of infinite dimension will be more natural, and well-motivated.

Four appendices have been added: a primer on filters, key results (with proofs) about the wavelet transform, a complete discussion of a counterexample to the Marr-Mallat conjecture on zero-crossings, and a brief introduction to Hölder and Besov spaces. In addition, all of the figures have been redrawn, and the references have been expanded to a comprehensive list of over 260 entries. The book includes several new results that have not appeared elsewhere.

  • Release : 1996
  • ISBN : 0195094239
  • Pages : 523 pages

Download or read book Wavelets written by Gordon Erlebacher and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1996 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wavelets are spatially localized functions whose amplitude drops off exponentially outside a small "window". They are used to magnify experimental or numerical data and have become powerful tools in signal processing and other computational sciences. This book gives scientists and engineers a practical understanding of wavelets--their origins, their purpose, their use, and their prospects. It covers the applications of wavelets as a diagnostic tool and the use of wavelet basis functions to solve differential equations. Each chapter was written by one of five lecturers of a course sponsored by the Institute of Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE) and the NASA Langley Research Center. Not only does this book treat the latest advances on the subject, but it also attempts to impart practical knowledge to allow scientists and engineers to evaluate objectively where these tools stand in relation to their needs.

Book Fractals Theory and Applications in Engineering

Download or read book Fractals Theory and Applications in Engineering written by Michel Dekking and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Owing to the rapid emergence and growth of techniques in the engineering application of fractals, it has become necessary to gather the most recent advances on a regular basis. This book is a continuation of the first volume - published in 1997 - but contains interesting developments. A major point is that mathematics has become more and more involved in the definition and use of fractal models. It seems that the time of the qualitative observation of fractal phenomena has gone. Now the main models are strongly based upon theoretical arguments. Fractals: Theory and Applications in Engineering is a multidisciplinary book which should interest every scientist working in areas connected to fractals.

Book Wavelets in Physics

  • Author : J. C. van den Berg
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2004-03-18
  • ISBN : 9780521533539
  • Pages : 478 pages

Download or read book Wavelets in Physics written by J. C. van den Berg and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-03-18 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys the application of the recently developed technique of the wavelet transform to a wide range of physical fields, including astrophysics, turbulence, meteorology, plasma physics, atomic and solid state physics, multifractals occurring in physics, biophysics (in medicine and physiology) and mathematical physics. The wavelet transform can analyze scale-dependent characteristics of a signal (or image) locally, unlike the Fourier transform, and more flexibly than the windowed Fourier transform developed by Gabor fifty years ago. The continuous wavelet transform is used mostly for analysis, but the discrete wavelet transform allows very fast compression and transmission of data and speeds up numerical calculation, and is applied, for example, in the solution of partial differential equations in physics. This book will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in many fields of physics, and to applied mathematicians and engineers interested in physical application.
