Book Beginnings of Russian Industrialization 1800 1860

Download or read book Beginnings of Russian Industrialization 1800 1860 written by William L. Blackwell and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Russian tradition and institutions resemble those of Asia and Africa as much if not more than the patterns of Western societies, the pre-1917 industrial history of Russia, as the last part of the tsarist regime, provides one of the most important examples of early industrialization in world history. In this broad, ambitious reconstruction of the early stages of Russia's industrial development—English-Professor Blackwell shows that the period from 1800 to 1860 was one of necessary preparation for the rapid industrialization of the later 19th century. The book is based upon a wide variety of primary and secondary sources in the Russian language. Originally published in 1968. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Book The Fog of Peace and War Planning

Download or read book The Fog of Peace and War Planning written by Talbot C. Imlay and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-01-24 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we plan under conditions of uncertainty? The perspective of military planners is a key organizing framework: do they see themselves as preparing to administer a peace, or preparing to fight a future war? Most interwar volumes examine only the 1920s and the 1930s. This new volume goes back, and forward in time, to draw on a greater expanse of history in order to tease out lessons for contemporary planners. These chapters are grouped into four periods: 1815-1856, 1871-1914, 1918-1938, and post-Second World War. They progress from low-tech to high-tech concerns, for example, the first period examines armies, while the second period examines navies, the third asseses navies combined with air forces, and finally for the Kaiser chapter explores nuclear issues and decision-making.

Book Shakespeare Elizabeth and Ivan

Download or read book Shakespeare Elizabeth and Ivan written by Rima Greenhill and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-04-03 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare's comedy Love's Labour's Lost has perplexed scholars and theatergoers for over 400 years due to its linguistic complexity, obscure topical allusions and decidedly non-comedic ending. According to traditional interpretations, it is Shakespeare's "French" play, based on events and characters from the French Wars of Religion. This work argues that the play's French surface conceals a Russian core. It outlines an interpretation of Love's Labour's Lost rooted in diplomatic and trade relations between Russia and Elizabethan England during the dramatic decades following England's discovery of a northern trade route to Muscovy in 1553. Drawing on original research of 16th-century sources in English, Latin and French, the text also surveys Russian sources previously unavailable in translation. This analysis provides new explanations for some of the play's previously most enigmatic elements, such as its unconventional ending, the significance of its secondary characters, linguistic anomalies and the Masque of the Muscovites itself.

Book Military Experience in the Age of Reason

Download or read book Military Experience in the Age of Reason written by Christopher Duffy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-12-20 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1987. War in the 18th century was a bloody business. A line of infantry would slowly march, to the beat of a drum, into a hail of enemy fire. Whole ranks would be wiped out by cannon fire and musketry. Christopher Duffy's investigates the brutalities of the battlefield and also traces the lives of the officer to the soldier from the formative conditions of their earliest years to their violent deaths or retirement, and shows that, below their well-ordered exteriors, the armies of the Age of Reason underwent a revolutionary change from medieval to modern structures and ways of thinking.

Topics include: Scots in medieval Ireland; the Scots fighting as part of the 'Auld Alliance' with France in the 15th and 16th centuries; Scots active in warfare in early modern Russia; a Scottish NCO who was in Marlborough's wars and recorded his adventures in an autobiography; a shrewd colonial governor in early 18th-century America; Scottish military experiences in India; soldiers in Romantic fiction, especially Scott's Quentin Durward; the camp and barrack-room life of Scottish regiments in the 19th century; Scots in the Spanish Civil War; and Scottish soldiers as part of the final decades of the British Empire. While set against a military background, these studies also aim to investigate the social contexts in which Scottish soldiers functioned in many lands during a period of seven centuries. This volume is the second in a new series, the Mackie Monographs, based on the Mackie Symposia held in the University of Aberdeen, which have as their theme the historical study of Scotland's overseas links.

Book Eighteenth Century Naval Officers

Download or read book Eighteenth Century Naval Officers written by Evan Wilson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-06 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys the lives and careers of naval officers across Europe at the height of the age of sail. It traces the professionalization of naval officers by exploring their preparation for life at sea and the challenges they faced while in command. It also demonstrates the uniqueness of the maritime experience, as long voyages and isolation at sea cemented their bond with naval officers across Europe while separating them from landlubbers. It depicts, in a way no previous study has, the parameters of their shared experiences—both the similarities that crossed national boundaries and connected officers, and the differences that can only be seen from an international perspective.

Book The Memoirs of Catherine the Great

Download or read book The Memoirs of Catherine the Great written by Catherine the Great and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empress Catherine II brought Europe to Russia, and Russia to Europe, during her long and eventful reign (1762—96). She fostered the culture of the Enlightenment and greatly expanded the immense empire created by Czar Ivan the Terrible, shifting the balance of power in Europe eastward. Famous for her will to power and for her dozen lovers, Catherine was also a prolific and gifted writer. Fluent in French, Russian, and German, Catherine published political theory, journalism, comedies, operas, and history, while writing thousands of letters as she corresponded with Voltaire and other public figures. The Memoirs of Catherine the Great provides an unparalleled window into eighteenth-century Russia and the mind of an absolute ruler. With insight, humor, and candor, Catherine presents her eyewitness account of history, from her whirlwind entry into the Russian court in 1744 at age fourteen as the intended bride of Empress Elizabeth I’s nephew, the eccentric drunkard and future Peter III, to her unhappy marriage; from her two children, several miscarriages, and her and Peter’s numerous affairs to the political maneuvering that enabled Catherine to seize the throne from him in 1762. Catherine’s eye for telling details makes for compelling reading as she describes the dramatic fall and rise of her political fortunes. This definitive new translation from the French is scrupulously faithful to her words and is the first for which translators have consulted original manuscripts written in Catherine’s own hand. It is an indispensable work for anyone interested in Catherine the Great, Russian history, or the eighteenth century.
