Download or read book Spiked Saxifrage Micranthes Spicata written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Targeted surveys on foot and with helicopter support in the summers of 2013 and 2014 resulted in an increase in the estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) from 7213 km2 to 9,622 km2, index of area of occupancy (IAO) from 24 km2 to 56 km2, number of locations from 6 to 12-14, and the number of mature individuals from ~2500 to ~3200. [...] Spiked Saxifrage is the largest of the ten species of Micranthes in Yukon, and of the 20 species that occur in Alaska and northwestern Canada (Brouillet and Elvander 2009). [...] Plants from throughout the range of Spiked Saxifrage (n=24) were surveyed at the ITS-2 region (internal transcribed spacer 2) and the results archived in the Barcode of Life Systems database (BOLD) (Ratnasingham and Hebert 2007). [...] In Alaska, it occurs scattered throughout much of the central part of the state from the Yukon border to the west coast (Figure 2). [...] The surveys resulted in the discovery of two additional sites and it is believed that most of the suitable habitat in the area has now been searched.

Book excerpt: The exquisite symmetry of the star-shaped blooms of saxifrages has captivated gardeners for centuries. Close observation of their fine markings, artful color combinations, and graceful presence makes it eminently clear why they attract such an enthusiastic following. Many saxifrages come from mountain habitats that make them well-suited to rock gardens, troughs, and containers, but the diverse genus includes a huge range of garden worthy plants that deserve to be better known and more widely grown. This book brings together accounts of garden and wild saxifrages, their botany, history, cultivation and propagation. All sections of genus Saxifraga are described, first discursively for the general gardener and then from a botanical viewpoint. There are the dwarf cushion saxifrages whose perfect domes of foliage are studded with jewel-like flowers, the silver saxifrages whose distinctive rosettes and fountain sprays of white flowers associate well with ordinary garden plants, and the mossy saxifrages whose highly prized cultivars have enhanced gardens since the end of the nineteenth century. Malcolm McGregor's advice on using saxifrages in different parts of the garden and his list of the top 100 saxifrages will be invaluable to gardeners new to the genus and to experts who wish to diversify. This is the fascinating story of a true enthusiast's search for saxifrages in the wild, his techniques for successful cultivation, and his continuing quest for information. It will increase understanding of this plant, inspire everyone to grow more saxifrages in their gardens, and satisfy specialists and enthusiasts for decades to come.

Book Gray Herbarium Index Harvard University

Download or read book Gray Herbarium Index Harvard University written by Gray Herbarium and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 846 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reproduction of a card index, prepared 1894-1903 by Josephine A. Clark at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Library and (since 1903) by the Gray Herbarium. The set reproduces about 265,000 cards published between 1894 and 1966. It is an indispensable tool for the taxonomy of NorthAmerican plants, covering all vascular plant taxa of the Western Hemisphere beginning with literature of 1886. For earlier names use the original volumes of Index kewensis. "Each card bears the scientific name of the plant, an abbreviation of the publishing author, a bibliographical reference to the place of publication and a brief statement of the geographic location of the taxon. New names and new combinations of names are indexed and the synonym involved is provided on each card" (Preface). Cross-references are provided, and when corrections are needed they are supplied on new cards.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides both a handy reference to the scientific names of plants and a clearly written account of the ways in which the naming of plants has changed with time and why these changes were necessary. It deals with the problems of using common names for plants against the historical background of our increasing discrimination of kinds of plants. It then goes on to consider landmarks in the standardization of both common and 'scientific' names and the development of internationally agreed principles governing the format and use of names in botany, sylviculture, agriculture and horticulture. From the alphabetical list the reader may interpret the scientific names of plants from any part of the world. For this second edition a number of changes and corrections in both parts have been made. The author has attempted to keep the first part acceptable to the amateur gardener by resisting a temptation to make it a definite guide to the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature. Others have done this already and with great clarity. Revision has allowed the inclusion of a brief comment on both synonymous and illegitimate botanical names and reference to recent attempts to accommodate the various traits and interests in the naming and names of cultivated plants.

Book A Garden for the Rusty Patched Bumblebee

Download or read book A Garden for the Rusty Patched Bumblebee written by Lorraine Johnson and published by Douglas & McIntyre. This book was released on 2022-05-21 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Support biodiversity with this practical guide to creating habitat gardens for native pollinators in Southern Ontario. Saving the bees is an environmental cause that resonates deeply with Canadians. While much of the popular focus is on honeybees, an introduced species, many people are largely unaware of the importance of native bees. These pollinators are of crucial importance and are threatened by climate change, habitat loss and fragmentation, and disease and competition from non-native species and modern intensive agriculture. A Garden for the Rusty-Patched Bumblebee provides all the information needed for gardeners to take action to support and protect pollinators—by creating habitat in yards and communal spaces, and on balconies and rooftops. There are approximately 400 species of native bees in Ontario, including bumblebees, sweat bees, mining bees, cuckoo bees, leafcutter bees and cellophane bees. This book introduces and deepens the concept of pollinator gardening—creating gardens that help bees thrive—by exploring specialist relationships. For example, the native-to-Ontario sweat bee Lasioglossum oenotherae specializes in pollen from the native evening primrose plant. With plant recommendations specific to Southern Ontario, as well as useful garden designs and numerous tips for success, this compact, full-colour guide will enable gardeners to discover the crucial connections between native plants and native pollinators—and learn how to cultivate their own patch of pollinator paradise.

Book Moths of Western North America

Download or read book Moths of Western North America written by Jerry A. Powell and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Two of North America's most prolific and respected specialists on moths--particularly those of the West--have combined over a century of experience and scholarship to introduce western moths of all families authoritatively to both the amateur and the experienced professional entomologist. This biologically oriented and beautifully illustrated treatment of a quarter of all known western moth species fills a long-needed void, and does it superbly."--Charles V. Covell Jr., author of A Field Guide to Moths of Eastern North America "This work sets a new high water mark for North American lepidopterology. Considering the authors' century of combined studies of western Lepidoptera, it is clear from the outset that no other team could have delivered a work so rich in taxonomic and life history information, much of it being original and appearing in the literature for the first time. I will read my copy more like a novel than a reference work, casting about the accounts and repeatedly flipping through the 2300 color images to better familiarize myself with our continent's rich and handsome diversity of moths. Moths of Western North America will serve as both gateway and catalyst for the study of moths for decades, and especially for microlepidopterans--for whom no like work exists in the New World."--David L. Wagner, author of Caterpillars of Eastern North America "Recent years have seen a surge of interest in moths, with growing appreciation of their amazing diversity and their great ecological importance. Information on western moths has been scattered and scarce, however, so this new volume is a tremendous step forward. Jerry Powell and Paul Opler bring a vast amount of knowledge and experience to the subject, and their Moths of Western North America is a landmark publication, instantly indispensable to anyone with a serious interest in Lepidoptera."--Kenn Kaufman, coauthor of Kaufman Field Guide to Butterflies of North America
