Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fusion Reactor Design Provides a detailed overview of fusion reactor design, written by an international leader in the field Nuclear fusion—generating four times as much energy from the same mass of fuel as nuclear fission—is regarded by its proponents as a viable, eco-friendly alternative to gas-fired, coal-fired, and conventional power plants. Although the physics of nuclear fusion is essentially understood, the construction of prototype reactors currently presents significant technical challenges. Fusion Reactor Design: Plasma Physics, Fuel Cycle System, Operation and Maintenance provides a systematic, reader-friendly introduction to the characteristics, components, and critical systems of fusion reactors. Focusing on the experimental Tokamak reactor, this up-to-date resource covers relevant plasma physics, necessary technology, analysis methods, and the other aspects of fusion reactors. In-depth chapters include derivations of key formulas, figures highlighting physical and structural characteristics of fusion reactors, illustrative numerical calculations, practical design examples, and more. Designed to help researchers and engineers understand and overcome the technological difficulties in making fusion power a reality, this volume: Provides in-depth knowledge on controlled thermonuclear fusion and its large-scale application in both current fusion reactors and future test reactors Covers plasma analysis, plasma equilibrium and stability, and plasma transport and confinement, and safety considerations Explains each component of fusion reactors, including divertors, superconducting coils, plasma heating and current drive systems, and vacuum vessels Discusses safety aspects of fusion reactors as well as computational approaches to safety aspects of fusion reactors Fusion Reactor Design: Plasma Physics, Fuel Cycle System, Operation and Maintenance is required reading for undergraduate and graduate students studying plasma physics and fusion reactor technology, and an important reference for nuclear physicists, nuclear reactor manufacturers, and power engineers involved in fusion reactor research and advanced technology development.

Book Introduction to Particle Physics

Download or read book Introduction to Particle Physics written by Dezső Horváth and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-05-03 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook is a unique treatise on the present status of particle physics summarised for physics students at an introductory level: it provides insights into the essential experimental and theoretical techniques needed to start research at modern high energy accelerators such as the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The first three parts of the book discuss the experimental and phenomenological aspects at a level suitable for MSc students, but BSc students interested in particle physics will also find useful information there. The fourth part is oriented to advanced MSc or PhD students to make them acquainted with the precise formulation of the standard model of particle interactions, as well as with the mathematical background needed for the correct interpretation of the experimental results. In this two-step approach, the book offers a gradually deepening understanding of particle physics, building up the standard model and providing an overview of its verification, together with the necessary theoretical and experimental techniques. Using the example of the simplest present-day experiments, it is explained how one can obtain experimental results and theoretical estimations for measurable quantities from clear basic principles. The sources of uncertainties and the methods of improving precision are also discussed.

Download or read book Iter Physics written by C Wendell Horton, Jr and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The promise of a vast and clean source of thermal power drove physics research for over fifty years and has finally come to collimation with the international consortium led by the European Union and Japan, with an agreement from seven countries to build a definitive test of fusion power in ITER. It happened because scientists since the Manhattan project have envisioned controlled nuclear fusion in obtaining energy with no carbon dioxide emissions and no toxic nuclear waste products. This large toroidal magnetic confinement ITER machine is described from confinement process to advanced physics of plasma-wall interactions, where pulses erupt from core plasma blistering the machine walls. Emissions from the walls reduce the core temperature which must remain ten times hotter than the 15 million degree core solar temperature to maintain ITER fusion power. The huge temperature gradient from core to wall that drives intense plasma turbulence is described in detail. Also explained are the methods designed to limit the growth of small magnetic islands, the growth of edge localized plasma plumes and the solid state physics limits of the stainless steel walls of the confinement vessel from the burning plasma. Designs of the wall coatings and the special 'exhaust pipe' for spent hot plasma are provided in two chapters. And the issues associated with high-energy neutrons — about 10 times higher than in fission reactions — and how they are managed in ITER, are detailed.
