Book Saving the African American from Cradle to Grave

Download or read book Saving the African American from Cradle to Grave written by Riccardo V. Haynes and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-29 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My idea to write this book centers on the desire to educate my own people. Here, I am referring to the black African American man in particular. Although I may not be the most well-known Negro in America, I do feel that I have acquired certain knowledge that if widely dispensed and utilized will definitely have a positive impact on my brothers out there in America trying to survive. The information I intend to relay originates from my experiences in the world, my formal education, the Bible and religious studies, as well as my knowledge acquired in being a member of the most often discussed but most often misunderstood Secret Society of all time. I am referring here to the Masonic Fraternity (Prince Hall Affiliation), of which I have been a member for well over twenty years. Brothers, the time is now. Our time has finally come to advance and be recognized for who we really are and for the greatness of our legacy. Not since the year 2012 have we really been free to become everything that we once were and are destined to be in the future. I will explain the significance of this particular year and why it was so important to us later. In any event, know that you have the power. Use it to better yourself, your family, and mankind.

Black men must begin assuming responsibility and accountability for the chains of stagnation—spiritually, socially, psychologically—some are bound by. Black men have proven we can survive and thrive. But there yet remain many who need the assistance and how-to instructions and encouragement that this book enlists. Book Fifty Five Positive Steps Black People Can Take to Preserve Themselves into the 21St Century

Download or read book Fifty Five Positive Steps Black People Can Take to Preserve Themselves into the 21St Century written by Michael W. Cromwell and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2004-03-22 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American black is a unique individual, with a unique past and history that needs to be preserved. The American black is not a saint; neither is he a ghost. But he is flesh and blood, a human being that needs to be respected and treated fairly. But the treatment must first come through the manner in which the American black presents himself or herself to the world. Fifty-Five Positive Steps Black People Can Take to Preserve Themselves into the 21st Century provides psychological, physical and spiritual suggestions on how American blacks can empower themselves and therefore empower the race, through one another. Always with an eye on history and a hope for communal unity of some kind, Fifty-Five Steps encourages American black people to do two things: to remember their past, where they come from, always; and to become well rounded people where they are now. And the two concepts are not mutually exclusive. Blacks can be all that they can be, love themselves and their history pridefully and still exist in the climate of modern America. Lastly, Fifty-Five Steps was written in reaction to a growing belief that "blackness" is dead or dying, that black Americans have been absorbed or assimilated. On the contrary, Fifty-Five Steps asks the black readers to love one another and to come together in a final stand for the integrity of essential blackness.

Download or read book Eight Propositions written by Joe L. Rempson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2020-11-19 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rempson takes issue with those who lay the plight of African Americans on racism, not seeing it, today, as a major obstacle to black progress. Rather, he traces the origin back to what he terms the African American Garden of Eden. In it, W. E. B. Dubois outlasted Booker T. Washington and fathered a tradition which Rempson argues has produced a victim identity and an emphasis on the system rather than the self. Only black males offer a way out, he declares, because it is entirely “our black males who are keeping us down and curtailing our progress,” in contrast to black females, who “are doing OK.” They are plagued by what Rempson calls the African American Male School Adaptability Crisis (AMSAC). Their academic performance ranks at the bottom, alone, below black female students and below white, Asian, and Hispanic male students. In large urban areas, their high school dropout rate is 59 percent and, nationally, they lag behind in college attendance and graduation rates. The outcome, Rempson argues, is dysfunctionality and the existence of hedonistic norms which hinder family and community stability. But while black males are the problem, Rempson contends, it is nevertheless only they who can solve it because research and experience show that it takes males to bring up and change other males. Though intended for everyone, he therefore writes his book to his fellow advantaged black males and makes a passionate plea for them to step up and, with the help of black females and of the nation, take the lead. As their guide, he has formulated eight propositions. Arrived at through an examination of impressively extensive data from numerous sources and disciplines, they are a marked departure from the customary. Most strikingly, delicate matters, such as those which pertain to intelligence quotient (IQ) and culture, are openly confronted and dealt with. But, Rempson writes, “unless confronted, we will not solve our problems.” “Nor,” he continues, “can we solve them unless we cut the umbilical cord to white America. We have no right to expect it to be our savior; nor are we justified in perceiving it as our oppressor.” Forcefully and finely written, Rempson’s book is a singular and courageous contribution. Alone, his eight propositions make it a worthy read.

  • Pages : 536 pages

Download or read book How to be written by Harriette Cole and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Etiquette is more than knowing which fork to use. Good manners are the rules that let us find our way in today's rapidly changing maze of lifestyles, customs and relationships. And anyone who doesn't know these rules is living and working at a real disadvantage. Traditionally in the African-American community, practical instruction in the fundamental dos and don'ts of everyday living -- manners and etiquette -- was given by the extended family in a process called "home training". Today, though, when both parents usually have to work, and the extended family -- grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins -- is often scattered across the country, it has become very difficult for our children to receive the guidance they need. The result: Many African Americans are growing up without a clear understanding of how to be, how to behave with others. You may ask: Who can afford the time to worry about etiquette nowadays? The only right response to that question is: Who can afford not to worry? The simple fact is that it doesn't matter how smart or educated or even how rich you are -- bad manners will hold you back. How to Be treats manners as a resource for the empowerment of people of African descent. Needless to say, good manners are not Black, white, brown or any other color of the rainbow, but one's race and culture do affect the content of what are called good manners. And so How to Be offers guidance drawn from the tried-and-true experience and wisdom of our African-American elders as well as from European mainstream traditions. Here you'll find authoritative answers to all your questions about family; the new codes of dating, love and sex; entertaining any number of guests from one toone thousand; workplace issues; and travel. Also, you'll find all the information you need to deal successfully with every one of the familiar rites of passage, from weddings to funerals and from Kwanzaa to Christmas, including religious ceremonies of all kinds; and you'll find proper forms of address and everything you need to know to write appropriate notes or letters for every occasion. In short, How to Be is a treasure trove of advice about the manners you need to succeed. Fashion and lifestyle editor, author, media-trainer and workshop leader, Harriette Cole has spent her whole life and career preparing to write How to Be. It is a unique work, a guide to real manners for real people in a changing world.

Download or read book Building on Resilience written by Fred A. Bonner II and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we fix the leaky educational pipeline into a conduit of success for Black males? That the issue is critical is demonstrated by the statistics that only 10% of Black males in the United States are proficient in 8th grade reading, only 52% graduate from high school within four years, and only 35 percent graduate from college. This book uniquely examines the trajectory of Black males through the educational pipeline from pre-school through college. In doing so it not only contributes significantly to the scholarship on the experiences of this population, but bridges the gap between theory and practice to provide frameworks and models that will improve these young men’s educational outcomes throughout their educational journeys.A compelling feature of the book is that that it does not treat Black males as homogeneous, but recognizes the diversity that exists among Black males in various educational settings. It demonstrates the need to recognize students’ intersectionalities and individual characteristics as an essential preliminary to developing practices to improve outcomes at every educational stage.Throughout, the contributing authors also focus on the strategies and experiences of Black males who achieve academic excellence, examining growth-producing and asset-based practices that can be sustained, and that build upon the recognition that these males have agency and possess qualities such as resilience that are essential to their learning and development. The frameworks and models that conclude each chapter are equally commendable to K–12 educators and administrators; higher education faculty, student affairs practitioners, and administrators; and policymakers, for whom templates are provided for rectifying the continuing inequities of our educational system.

Book The Black Man s Guide Out of Poverty

Download or read book The Black Man s Guide Out of Poverty written by Aaron Clarey and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-02-09 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black men suffer more than any other racial or sexual group in America. They have the lowest standards of living, shortest life expectancies, highest incarceration rates and suffer other sociological and economic ailments. However, for the past 50 years virtually NO PROGRESS has been made in improving the lives of black men. We have to admit what we've been trying has failed and black men have paid the price. And it's time for that to change. Life is too short and too precious to live it under poverty, making only 67% of what white males do. Fathers and husbands are too important to be replaced by a government check, ruining families in the process. And futures too vital not to be lived to their full potential. If you're a black man and have had enough and want more out of life then "The Black Man's Guide Out of Poverty" is for you. Not just a book on "personal financial management," "The Black Man's Guide Out of Poverty" is specifically tailored towards the plight of black men. It addresses the sociological, economic, and political forces that hold them down. It shows you the path out of poverty. It lays out the road map towards a better life. And makes sure your one and finite life is a happy, well-lived one. Demand a better life than what politicians and society PERMIT you to have. Book Children of the Dream

Download or read book Children of the Dream written by Audrey Edwards and published by Doubleday Books. This book was released on 1992 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Martin Luther King's now legendary "I Have a Dream" speech, he hoped for a time when "little children... will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character". It is these children, now come of age in the post-civil rights era, shaped by the belief that the key to their success would be in assimilating into the very culture that has for so long denied them opportunity and equality, who are the Children of the Dream. The authors define black success in the last thirty years as the realization of an American promise: access to equal opportunity. Using both an economic and an occupational framework to assess the phenomenon of achievement on a generation of blacks who grew up in an era defined by the concept of integration, they have focused on black baby boomers who grew up possessing something no generation of blacks has ever before experienced: a sense of entitlement. For more than two years, they traveled the country seeking out those black men and women who have achieved positions of power and influence in the American workplace. The thoughts and insights of this generation help illuminate just what it takes to be a successful black living in white America. Whatever their personal behavioral styles, the one common trait that emerged from all of the interviews presented here is that successful blacks are first and foremost affirmed and empowered by a positive sense of racial identity. They fully understand that as blacks they will encounter obstacles, prejudices, and inequities, but they never view their race as the liability or cause of the problem. They understand it is the perverse reactions of others to the black race that create the problem.Surprising and often controversial, Children of the Dream stands as vivid testimony to the increasingly complex world in which black Americans strive to succeed.
