Which is why she can’t understand how she ends up standing in the Kiddie Pool of Rebirth, surrounded by unknown barefoot and braless women. For as long as she can remember, Janie O’Connelly has been dating-impaired. Although she's willing to chalk up her once-again-single status to nothing more than bad luck, her best friend Sarra “Fitz” Fitzpatrick thinks Janie is possibly cursed. Now a group (coven?) of women known as The Ladies of the Moon have made it their mission to save Janie from herself. Through mix-ups and fix-ups, Janie only knows she's going to need a strong sense of humor (and a few strong drinks!) to deal with the crazy women in her life.

Book excerpt: “A gorgeous, poetic journey threaded with . . . magic about a group from a Chinese university who take to the road to escape the Japanese invasion of 1937” —Kate Quinn, New York Times–bestselling author of The Alice Network and The Huntress China, 1937: When Japanese fall on the city of Nanking, Hu Lian and her classmates at Minghua University are ordered to flee. Lian and a convoy of more than a hundred students, faculty, and staff must walk a thousand miles to the safety of China’s western provinces, a journey marred by hunger, cold, and the threat of aerial attack. And it is not just the student refugees who are at risk: Lian and her classmates have been entrusted with a priceless treasure, a 500-year-old collection of myths and folklore known as the Library of Legends. Within the convoy, Lian finds friendship and romance with handsome Liu Shaoming. But after one classmate is murdered and another arrested, Lian must escape before a family secret puts her in danger. Accompanied by Shao and his maidservant Sparrow, Lian makes her way to Shanghai, hoping to reunite with her mother. On the journey, Lian learns of the connection between her two companions and a tale from the Library of Legends, The Willow Star and the Prince. Learning Shao and Sparrow’s true identities compels Lian to confront her feelings for Shao. But there are broader consequences too, for as the ancient books travel across China, they awaken immortals and guardian spirits to embark on an exodus of their own, one that changes the country’s fate forever. “Janie Chang has beautifully melded history and the spirit world to create an adventurous love story.” —Lisa See, New York Times bestselling author of Shanghai Girls

Book excerpt: What would you pay for a short re-wind? Tom Booker is a new attorney at a powerful Washington law firm. Texting while driving across Memorial Bridge, he loses control and crashes into an oncoming minivan carrying his own daughter and three of her friends. The minivan tips up on two wheels, about to flip over into the Potomac. Time freezes, he's alone on the bridge. A young couple approaches and offers him a re-wind. The crash would be averted, the children saved. All he must do is kill someone every two weeks—anyone—for a soul exchange. A moment later, Tom is back in his spinning car, but averts the deadly crash. He laughs about the hallucination, attributing it to bumping his head on the steering wheel when his car came to an abrupt stop. But his encounter wasn't a hallucination. Two weeks later, the minivan driver is brutally murdered. Tom receives a text: one down, four to go. He has never shot, much less owned, a gun in his life, but now he must turn himself into a serial killer or his daughter and her friends will die.

Book The Center of the Web

Download or read book The Center of the Web written by Delese Wear and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1993-08-03 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Center of the Web examines the complexities of how solitude is perceived by women. Each contributor describes how solitude is a dimension of her personal and public life: how she defines it, if and how she seeks it, where she finds it, and how it influences her life. The voices in the book come from varied vantage points, illuminating women’s perspectives of solitude with regard to class, culture, race, and sexual identity. Some essays are grounded in philosophy, literature, or psychology, others are autobiographical, and some confront the seeming dichotomy of solitude on one hand, and care, connection, and responsibility on the other. With the contemporary focus on women’s experiences grounded in context and connection to others, this book presents a perspective often overlooked or unexamined.

Book African American Vernacular English as a Literary Dialect

Download or read book African American Vernacular English as a Literary Dialect written by Sophia Huber and published by Herbert Utz Verlag. This book was released on 2018-06-13 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge about one’s linguistic background, especially when it is different from mainstream varieties, provides a basis for identity and self. Ancestral values can be upheld, celebrated, and rooted further in the consciousness of its speakers. In the case of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) the matter is not straightforward and, ultimately, the social implications its speakers still face today are unresolved. Through detailed analysis of the four building blocks phonology, morphology, syntax, and vocabulary, Sophia Huber tries to trace the development of AAVE as a literary dialect. By unearthing in what ways AAVE in its written form is different from the spoken variety, long established social stigmata and stereotypes which have been burned into the consciousness of the USA through a (initially) white dominated literary tradition will be exposed. Analysing fourteen novels and one short story featuring AAVE, it is the first linguistic study of this scope.
