Book Anything We Love Can Be Saved

Download or read book Anything We Love Can Be Saved written by Alice Walker and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2012-04-04 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Anything We Love Can Be Saved, Alice Walker writes about her life as an activist, in a book rich in the belief that the world is saveable, if only we will act. Speaking from her heart on a wide range of topics--religion and the spirit, feminism and race, families and identity, politics and social change--Walker begins with a moving autobiographical essay in which she describes her own spiritual growth and roots in activism. She goes on to explore many important private and public issues: being a daughter and raising one, dreadlocks, banned books, civil rights, and gender communication. She writes about Zora Neale Hurston and Salman Rushdie and offers advice to Bill Clinton. Here is a wise woman's thoughts as she interacts with the world today, and an important portrait of an activist writer's life. NOTE: This edition does not include photographs.

Book excerpt: Frustration, confusion, and anger filled the heart of Jonathan French as he is separated from his three brothers at a young age as a result of his parents divorce. The life he lived was that of animosity towards his father for leaving them, and then his mother for sending him away to live with his aunt and uncle, but during this time is when he learns the true meaning of unconditional love. As a senior in high school, the sports world followed to see if Jonathan would become the next Michael Jordan, but when his soft spoken yet confident external ego came head to head with his fiery and frustrated internal one, what started out as a minor disciplinary action from his coach turned chaotic and Jonathan quit the team. What many saw as a dream shattered and a life destroyed, Jonathan saw as a lesson learned. Book Once Saved Always Saved

Download or read book Once Saved Always Saved written by David Pawson and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2021-07-30 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority Evangelical view is that once someone has accepted Christ as Saviour they are guaranteed salvation. But is it safe to assume that once we are saved, we are saved for always? David Pawson investigates this through biblical evidence, historical figures such as Augustine, Luther and Wesley, and evangelical assumptions about grace and justification, divine sovereignty and human responsibility. He asks whether something more than being born again is required so that our inheritance is not lost. This book helps us decide whether ‘once saved, always saved’ is real assurance or a misleading assumption. The answer will have profound effects on the way we live and disciple others.

Book Saved by Love A Story of London Streets

Download or read book Saved by Love A Story of London Streets written by Emma Leslie and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THERE are some places in London where King Dirt holds a carnival all the year round—narrow back streets, where the tall houses, almost meeting at the top, shut out every gleam of sunlight, except during the longest and hottest days of summer; and then only a narrow rift of golden glory lights up a strip in the centre, and makes the shady corners look more dark and desolate than ever. In one of the shadowed nooks of such a street sat a little girl, her head leaning against the brick wall for a pillow; and you might have thought her fast asleep, but for an occasional sob. She had cried so long that her eyes were swollen and heavy; and even the faint light of Fisher's Lane made them ache so much that she was glad to close them. No one noticed her for some time, but at length a girl about her own age stopped and looked at her, and at last spoke. "What's the matter?" she said, touching her shoulder. With a sob and a start the girl opened her eyes. "O Elfie, is it you?" she said; and then her tears broke out afresh. "What is it? Haven't you got anything to eat?" she asked. "I shall never want to eat anything again," sobbed the other. "O Elfie, mother's dead!" "Dead, is she?" said Elfie, but looking as though she could not understand why that should cause any one to cry. "I shall never be happy again, Elfie. O mother, mother, why didn't you take me with you?" wailed the poor little orphan. "Just because she didn't want you, I guess," said Elfie, but at the same time sitting down to soothe the grief she could not understand. "There, don't cry," she went on in a matter-of-fact tone. "My mother's gone away, but I don't cry after her; not a bit of it; I know better than that, Susie Sanders." Susie shrank from her companion's touch as she said this, and thought of what her mother had said about making companions of the children in the street, and half regretted having spoken to Elfie. There was a great difference in the two girls, any one could see, though both might be equally poor. Elfie was unmistakably a street child, ragged, dirty, sharp-looking, with bright cunning eyes shining out of a good-tempered-looking face; while Susie, in her patched black frock and tidy pinafore, and timid, shrinking ways, showed unmistakably that, poor as she might be, there had been some one to love and take care of her. Alas for her, poor child! Her only friend in the wide world had died that morning, leaving her alone in the streets of London. It was the old, old story: a widow striving to work for herself and her only child, and sinking at last beneath the stroke of disease, after giving up one by one every article of furniture, and moving from place to place, until at last she was glad to find a refuge in the garret of one of these gaunt houses, where she had not lived many weeks before God called her to the mansion he had prepared for her.

Book Saved by a Song

Download or read book Saved by a Song written by Mary Gauthier and published by St. Martin's Essentials. This book was released on 2021-07-06 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A handbook for compassion... a Must-Read Music Book.” —Rolling Stone Country "Generous and big-hearted, Gauthier has stories to tell and worthwhile advice to share." —Wally Lamb, author of I Know This Much Is True "Gauthier has an uncanny ability to combine songwriting craft with a seeker’s vulnerability and a sage’s wisdom.” —Amy Ray, Indigo Girls From the Grammy nominated folk singer and songwriter, an inspiring exploration of creativity and the redemptive power of song Mary Gauthier was twelve years old when she was given her Aunt Jenny’s old guitar and taught herself to play with a Mel Bay basic guitar workbook. Music offered her a window to a world where others felt the way she did. Songs became lifelines to her, and she longed to write her own, one day. Then, for a decade, while struggling with addiction, Gauthier put her dream away and her call to songwriting faded. It wasn’t until she got sober and went to an open mic with a friend did she realize that she not only still wanted to write songs, she needed to. Today, Gauthier is a decorated musical artist, with numerous awards and recognition for her songwriting, including a Grammy nomination. In Saved by a Song, Mary Gauthier pulls the curtain back on the artistry of songwriting. Part memoir, part philosophy of art, part nuts and bolts of songwriting, her book celebrates the redemptive power of song to inspire and bring seemingly different kinds of people together.

Blissfully unaware that she has made a mortal enemy, Yursa is kidnapped by Zelée’s gang of followers and to her horror finds that she is a witch and a Satanist. Tied to a stake, Yursa is to be sacrificed to Satan by burning at the stake as a perverted revenge for Joan of Arc at the hands of English soldiers in 1431. By an unusual form of telepathy the Duc has a very strong feeling that she is in danger and acts accordingly. Can the strange magic that seems to connect her so instinctively to the smoulderingly handsome Duc be love? • Pages : 165 pages

Download or read book On Love written by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2021-01-22 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these homilies, most of which are previously unpublished, Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, addresses the theme he has celebrated, pondered, and witnessed by his life more than any other: love. For him, love is the vital nucleus of the Church and to serve Christ is above all a question of love: "Peter, do you love me? Feed my sheep" (Jn 21:15–17). Love is also the quest of every human being on the journey toward eternity. He beautifully states, "Christianity is a movement, a journey; it is not a theory, a sum total of doctrine; Christianity is life, it is a vital impetus that carries us toward true life. . . . Someone who has found love can say: I have found life." Arranged by the liturgical seasons of the Church year, the homilies predate the author's pontificate. The earliest dates from 1970 while he was still a professor of theology. Thus, this collection traces the way Joseph Ratzinger has been enamored of the love of God throughout his years of serving the Church.

Book The Battle for Wine and Love

Download or read book The Battle for Wine and Love written by Alice Feiring and published by HMH. This book was released on 2009-05-05 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An “entertaining and passionate” connoisseur tours the vineyards of Europe and California, arguing for an old-fashioned appreciation of authenticity (The New York Times). The drastic effects that influential wine critic Robert M. Parker Jr. has had on the winemaking industry are best described as wine Parkerization. Many vintners are leaving old techniques behind and turning to chemistry and technology in order to please Parker’s palate. This led to the disappearance of James Beard Foundation Award–winning writer Alice Feiring’s favorite wines—and she was determined to learn why. In a one-woman crusade that will have you wondering what exactly is in your glass, Feiring argues against the tyranny of homogenization, Big Wine, consultants, and, of course, Parker’s infamous one hundred-point scoring system. Traveling through the vineyards of the Loire and Champagne, to Piedmont and Spain, she searches for authentic Barolo, the last old-style Rioja, and the tastiest terroir-driven Champagnes. Feiring reveals what goes into the average bottle—the reverse osmosis, the yeasts and enzymes, the sawdust and oak chips—and why she doesn’t find much to drink in California. She introduces rebel winemakers who are embracing old-fashioned techniques and making wines with individuality and soul. And finally Feiring explains what love’s really got to do with it all, in a delightful read for anyone who truly appreciates the good things in life.
