Book Screening Nature

Download or read book Screening Nature written by Anat Pick and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmentalism and ecology are areas of rapid growth in academia and society at large. Screening Nature is the first comprehensive work that groups together the wide range of concerns in the field of cinema and the environment, and what could be termed “posthuman cinema.” It comprises key readings that highlight the centrality of nature and nonhuman animals to the cinematic medium, and to the language and institution of film. The book offers a fresh and timely intervention into contemporary film theory through a focus on the nonhuman environment as principal register in many filmic texts. Screening Nature offers an extensive resource for teachers, undergraduate students, and more advanced scholars on the intersections between the natural world and the worlds of film. It emphasizes the cross-cultural and geographically diverse relevance of the topic of cinema ecology.

  • ISBN : 8726665794
  • Pages : 100 pages

Download or read book The Man Eater written by Edgar Rice Burroughs and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2022-05-12 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love and greed, cowardice and heroism, rights and wrongs. This story set in the jungles of Africa has it all. You won't believe who turns out to be the hero of this suspenseful tale! 'The Man Eater' is an adventure novel that takes place in Congo, where the Belgian missionaries suffer frequent attacks and killings by the native Wakandas. There is no Tarzan this time, just an unusual hero. He takes it upon himself to punish the wrongdoers and go after justice and peace. A little bit of racial stereotyping and language which wouldn't be tolerated today, but all in all, it is a compelling and highly entertaining adventure novel that fans of Burroughs and Tarzan enthusiasts will devour in one go. Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) was an American author, best known for his novel ‘Tarzan of the Apes’ (1914) and its sequels as well as the Barsoom series. During World War II, he was one of the oldest U.S war correspondents. Tarzan and his adventures are loved by both young and old, and are evergreen classics. Many have watched at least one Tarzan tv series or movie with the most popular probably being the Disney animation film from 1999 and 'The Legend of Tarzan' from 2016 starring Alexander Skarsgård and Samuel L. Jackson.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Points out how British novelist Pym (1913-80) parodied the conventions of romance novels by deflating characters, hyperbole, and exaggeration, or emphasizing meticulously the mundane elements of everyday life. Shows how she used food, clothes, heroin and hero characterizations, and marriage customs to portray her characters,' and perhaps her own, skepticism about the whole business. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the previous volume, the Lord of the Jungle discovered the burnt corpse of his wife, Jane, after a visit to his African home by German soldiers. (One suspects that Burroughs never did like Jane; this sort of thing happened to her a lot.) In this volume, Tarzan learns that Jane was not murdered by the Germans but kidnaped -- and sets off in pursuit. As the novel begins, Tarzan has spent two months tracking his mate to Pal-ul-don ("Land of Men"), a hidden valley in Zaire, where he finds a land dinosaurs and men even stranger -- humanoids with tails. Ta-den is a hairless, white-skinned, Ho-don warrior; O-mat is a hairy, black skinned, Waz-don, chief of the tribe of Kor-ul-ja. In this new world Tarzan becomes a captive -- but he impresses his captors so well that they name him Tarzan-Jad-Guru ("Tarzan the Terrible"). Meanwhile, a second visitor has come to Pal-ul-don -- wearing only a loin cloth and carrying an Enfield rifle along and a long knife. Pal-ul-don is where Jane is being held captive, of course. ...

Book excerpt: The birth of prince Qualthalas Aeth’Akir was supposed to have been an auspicious occasion for the moon dwelling Sillistrael’li elves of Antiqua, an ancient world orbiting the giant blue sun of a binary star system. But, since his heralded arrival, the sole heir to the Moon Elven Dynasty has lived a far from princely life, developing, instead, a keen knack for trouble as he struggles to find purpose. In his sojourn through the kingdoms of the Mithrainian continent, Qual stumbles into a diabolic plot involving the malevolent Darklord, Zhiniel Al-Nistir Szord’Ryn – an Indigo Elven necromancer covertly amassing a legion of the damned within his underworld citadel. Trapped in a twisted labyrinth with his half-orykan lover, Kaira, the mischievous elflord soon comes face-to-face with his murderous, exiled cousin, Cazares: now an agent of the Darklord. Employing a mysterious shadowy power, the dangerous and bitter pariah abducts Qual’s companion and goads the meddling prince into following him through a network of portals leading into the heart of Zhiniel’s domain. As Qualthalas traverses the underworld kingdom of Bazrin-Dal’ateir, alone and severely underprepared, help arrives in the strange form of a savage, viny terror, woven from the primordial essence of the predatory jungle it once inhabited. Forging a bizarre bond, the two work together to seek the source of the insidious miasma seeping into Antiqua’s kingdoms from its core. Unbeknownst to Qualthalas, he has been carefully manipulated by the hand of the Darklord himself: his involvement an orchestration, his very existence instrumental to Zhiniel’s designs for world domination. As the desperate rogue delves deeper into the underworld, so the Soul Harvester’s insidious grip tightens, threatening to snuff the light of Qual’s last vestiges of sanity...
