Book Saturation of the Lower Hybrid Drift Instability by Mode Coupling

Download or read book Saturation of the Lower Hybrid Drift Instability by Mode Coupling written by J. P. Drake and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nonlinear mode-coupling theory of the lower-hybrid-drift instability is presented. A 2-D mode equation is derived which includes the nonlinear polarization and E X B electron drifts, adiabatic ions, and realistic sources and sinks of energy. It is found that the instability saturates by transfering energy from the growing, long wavelength modes to the damped, short wavelength modes. The saturation energy, mean square of the potential fluctuations, and diffusion coefficient are calculated self-consistently. (Author).

Book Collisionless Shocks in the Heliosphere

Download or read book Collisionless Shocks in the Heliosphere written by Robert G. Stone and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1985 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 35. Violent expansions of the solar corona cause transient shock waves which propagate outward from the sun at hundreds to thousands of kilometers per second; simple solar wind velocity gradients at the surface of the sun lead to high-speed streams overtaking slower streams, forming corotating shocks; and steady state supermagnetosonic solar wind flow past objects such as the planets lead to standing bow shocks. However, the solar wind plasma is so hot and tenuous that charged particle Coulomb collisions produce negligible thermalization or dissipation on scale sizes less than 0.1 AU. The irreversible plasma heating by these shocks is accomplished by wave-particle interactions driven by plasma instabilities. Hence these shocks are described as "collisionless."

Book Physics of Space Plasma Activity

Download or read book Physics of Space Plasma Activity written by Karl Schindler and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-11-23 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space plasma is so hot that the atoms break up into charged particles which then become trapped and stored in magnetic fields. When critical conditions are reached the magnetic field breaks up, releasing a large amount of energy and causing dramatic phenomena. The largest space plasma activity events observed in the solar system occur on the Sun, when coronal mass ejections expel several billion tons of plasma mass into space. This book provides a coherent and detailed treatment of the physical background of large plasma eruptions in space. It provides the background necessary for dealing with space plasma activity, and allows the reader to reach a deeper understanding of this fascinating natural event. The book employs both fluid and kinetic models, and discusses the applications to magnetospheric and solar activity. This will form an interesting reference for graduate students and academic researchers in the fields of astrophysics and plasma physics.

Book Saturation of Drift Instabilities by Electron Dynamics

Download or read book Saturation of Drift Instabilities by Electron Dynamics written by and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytical explanation is provided for phenomena observed in gyrokinetic particle simulations, which were used to study the nonlinear evolution of the universal instability. The nonlinear E x B advection of nearly resonant electrons is related to the deactivation of the instability mechanism, leading to oscillations of the perturbation amplitude around a nonzero saturated level. An equivalent description is given in terms of nonresonant mode coupling. A self-consistent evolution equation for the amplitude is obtained for the case where this mechanism predominates, and is successfully compared to the gyrokinetic simulations.

Book Lower Hybrid Drift Instability Saturation Mechanisms in One Dimensional Simulations

Download or read book Lower Hybrid Drift Instability Saturation Mechanisms in One Dimensional Simulations written by Y. -J. Chen and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The linear properties and saturation mechanisms of the lower-hybrid drift instability have been investigated using a one-dimensional particle-hybrid simulation. For low drift velocities (V sub d much less than V sub ti), ion trapping and current relaxation (V sub d approaches limit of 0) are competing processes for stabilization. If the relative electron-ion drift velocity is kept constant in time, ion trapping causes the end of instability growth; if this drift is allowed to decrease consistent with momentum balance, then saturation is due to current relaxation. (Author).
