Book excerpt: An analytical explanation is provided for phenomena observed in gyrokinetic particle simulations, which were used to study the nonlinear evolution of the universal instability. The nonlinear E x B advection of nearly resonant electrons is related to the deactivation of the instability mechanism, leading to oscillations of the perturbation amplitude around a nonzero saturated level. An equivalent description is given in terms of nonresonant mode coupling. A self-consistent evolution equation for the amplitude is obtained for the case where this mechanism predominates, and is successfully compared to the gyrokinetic simulations.

Book Lower Hybrid Drift Instability Saturation Mechanisms in One Dimensional Simulations

Download or read book Lower Hybrid Drift Instability Saturation Mechanisms in One Dimensional Simulations written by Y. -J. Chen and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The linear properties and saturation mechanisms of the lower-hybrid drift instability have been investigated using a one-dimensional particle-hybrid simulation. For low drift velocities (V sub d much less than V sub ti), ion trapping and current relaxation (V sub d approaches limit of 0) are competing processes for stabilization. If the relative electron-ion drift velocity is kept constant in time, ion trapping causes the end of instability growth; if this drift is allowed to decrease consistent with momentum balance, then saturation is due to current relaxation. Book Physical Processes in Hot Cosmic Plasmas

Download or read book Physical Processes in Hot Cosmic Plasmas written by W. Brinkmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gas at temperatures exceeding one million degrees is common in the Universe. Indeed it is likely that most of the gas in the Universe exists in intergalactic space in this form. Such highly-ionized gas, or plasma, is not restricted to the rarefied densities of intergalactic space, but is also found in clusters of galaxies, in galaxies themselves, in the expanding remnants of exploded stars and at higher densities in stars and the collapsed remains of stars up to the highest densities known, which occur in neutron stars. The abundant lower-Z elements, at least, in such gas are completely ionized and the gas acts as a highly conducting plasma. It is therefore subject to many cooperative phenomena, which are often complicated and ill-understood. Many of these processes are, however, well-studied (if not so well-understood) in laboratory plasmas and in the near environment of the Earth. Astronomers therefore have much to learn from plasma physicists working on laboratory and space plasmas and the parameter range studied by the plasma physicists might in turn be broadened by contact with astronomers. With that in mind, a NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Physical Processes in Hot Cosmic Plasmas was organized and took place in the Eolian Hotel, Vulcano, Italy on May 29 to June 2 1989. This book contains the Proceedings of that Workshop.

Book Hot Electrons in Semiconductors

Download or read book Hot Electrons in Semiconductors written by N. Balkan and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under certain conditions electrons in a semiconductor become much hotter than the surrounding crystal lattice. When this happens, Ohm's Law breaks down: current no longer increases linearly with voltage and may even decrease. Hot electrons have long been a challenging problem in condensed matter physics and remain important in semiconductor research. Recent advances in technology have led to semiconductors with submicron dimensions, where electrons can be confined to two (quantum well), one (quantum wire), or zero (quantum dot) dimensions. In these devices small voltages heat electrons rapidly, inducing complex nonlinear behavior; the study of hot electrons is central to their further development. This book is the only comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of hot electrons. Intended for both established researchers and graduate students, it gives a complete account of the historical development of the subject, together with current research and future trends, and covers the physics of hot electrons in bulk and low-dimensional device technology. The contributions are from leading scientists in the field and are grouped broadly into five categories: introduction and overview; hot electron-phonon interactions and ultra-fast phenomena in bulk and two-dimensional structures; hot electrons in quantum wires and dots; hot electron tunneling and transport in superlattices; and novel devices based on hot electron transport.

Book Negative Differential Resistance and Instabilities in 2 D Semiconductors

Download or read book Negative Differential Resistance and Instabilities in 2 D Semiconductors written by N. Balkan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instabilities associated with hot electrons in semiconductors have been investigated from the beginning of transistor physics in the 194Os. The study of NDR and impact ionization in bulk material led to devices like the Gunn diode and the avalanche-photo-diode. In layered semiconductors domain formation in HEMTs can lead to excess gate leakage and to excess noise. The studies of hot electron transport parallel to the layers in heterostructures, single and multiple, have shown abundant evidence of electrical instability and there has been no shortage of suggestions concerning novel NDR mechanisms, such as real space transfer, scattering induced NDR, inter-sub band transfer, percolation effects etc. Real space transfer has been exploited in negative-resistance PETs (NERFETs) and in the charge-injection transistor (CHINT) and in light emitting logic devices, but far too little is known and understood about other NDR mechanisms with which quantum well material appears to be particularly well-endowed, for these to be similarly exploited. The aim of this book is therefore to collate what is known and what is not known about NDR instabilities, and to identify promising approaches and techniques which will increase our understanding of the origin of these instabilities which have been observed during the last decade of investigations into high-field longitudinal transport in layered semiconductors. The book covers the fundamental properties of hot carrier transport and the associated instabilities and light emission in 2-dimensional semiconductors dealing with both theory and experiment.
