Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the winter of 476 A.D. the Ostrogoths, hungry and exhausted from wandering for months along the barren confines of the Byzantine Empire, wrote to Emperor Zeno in Constantinople requesting permission to enter the walled city of Epidaurum and just kinda crash and charge their phones. Closer to home, Orpheus walks Eurydice through a suburban refrigerator as a matter of tax planning. In The Goths & Other Stories, sexual desire, food, space, and anger are distorted; prose fiction, experimental poetry, philosophy, and design theory intersect and breed. The poetics of car accidents, capitalist consumption, and anarchist terrorism unfold at a Southern California car dealership.Readers of all centuries will feel at home in this book. The smell of seafood and speculative urban planning merge into a 1990s computer game, Abidjan has 12,756 streets with no way to go from one to another, an apocalypse of tax law and classical mythology descends upon suburbia and reveals a medieval theology of design, theater, and light. The book's six stories are set in different times and places - sometimes within the same narrative - but have in common a slippery approach to the boundaries between fiction and theory, between ontological planes, between the comical and the moral. Together they also form a treatise on the nature of writing as a branch of design - one whose medium is easier to reveal than to define. Sasha Kaoru Zamler-Carhart is a singer, medievalist, composer/designer, and formerly a linguist and a lawyer. Their artistic practice is reversible like an air conditioner. Sometimes it's forensic and archeological, and the machinery is pointed at an existing object: this is their stance as a medievalist and a linguist. Sometimes it's toggled to output and used to make a new design object: this is their work as a composer, designer, and writer, and formerly as a tax lawyer. Sasha is a lecturer at The New School, where they teach speculative design at Parsons School of Design, and history at Mannes School of Music. Sasha is also the vocalist of a improv band and a frequent performer of contemporary vocal music. They used to teach medieval music and Latin at the Royal Conservatoire, The Hague and direct a medieval polyphony ensemble. They graduated from Stanford with a JD, an MA in linguistics, and a BA in linguistics and philosophy. They have composition degrees from University of London (Royal Holloway) and the Royal Conservatoire, The Hague.

Book excerpt: Spurning her royal heritage to be raised by the great warrior, Kessligh, her exquisite swordplay astonishes all who witness it. But Sasha is still young, untested in battle and often led by her rash temper. In the complex world of Lenayin loyalties, her defiant wilfulness is attracting the wrong kind of attention. Lenayin is a land almost divided by its two faiths: the Verenthane of the ruling classes and the pagan Goeren-yai, amongst whom Sasha now lives. The Goeren-yai worship swordplay and honour and begin to see Sasha as the great spirit—the Synnich—who will unite them. But Sasha is still searching for what she believes and must choose her side carefully. When the Udalyn people—the symbol of Goeren-yai pride and courage—are attacked, Sasha will face her moment of testing. How will she act? Is she ready to lead? Can she be the saviour they need her to be?

Book Sex Politics and Putin

Download or read book Sex Politics and Putin written by Valerie Sperling and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is Vladimir Putin macho, or is he a "fag"? Sex, Politics, and Putin investigates how gender stereotypes and sexualization have been used as tools of political legitimation in contemporary Russia. Despite their enmity, regime allies and detractors alike have wielded traditional concepts of masculinity, femininity, and homophobia as a means of symbolic endorsement or disparagement of political leaders and policies. By repeatedly using machismo as a means of legitimation, Putin's regime (unlike that of Gorbachev or Yeltsin) opened the door to the concerted use of gendered rhetoric and imagery as a means to challenge regime authority. Sex, Politics, and Putin analyzes the political uses of gender norms and sexualization in Russia through three case studies: pro- and anti-regime groups' activism aimed at supporting or undermining the political leaders on their respective sides; activism regarding military conscription and patriotism; and feminist activism. Arguing that gender norms are most easily invoked as tools of authority-building when there exists widespread popular acceptance of misogyny and homophobia, Sperling also examines the ways in which sexism and homophobia are reflected in Russia's public sphere.

Download or read book Meet Me in Paris written by Sasha Hart and published by Diamond Patch Press. This book was released on 2024-07-30 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have a plan...but the city of love has a plan of its own. My late grandfather’s inheritance has two conditions: 1) Not a cent until I’ve traveled Europe for a month. (I mean, it's a sacrifice I’m willing to make.) 2) My estranged sisters and I must travel together. (Sister bonding. Gag.) Oh, and a third condition—our journey starts in Paris. City of Love. The place I’ve dreamed of visiting since I first spotted a postcard of the Eiffel Tower at age six. I’ve seen nearly every English movie about Paris ever made. I’ve studied French for years. I even have a bucket list of romantic experiences I want to have there with the first handsome Parisian I can find. (Seine River tour, anyone?) There’s just one problem. It’s also where my childhood best friend, Hunter, lives. The last time I saw the boy next door, he kissed me on the hood of his beat-up Pontiac and asked me to move to Paris with him. He should have known I couldn’t say yes. With my life crumbling by the minute and all my family problems—I mentioned my sisters, right?—I couldn’t just leave it all behind. Ultimately, it's fear that has kept me rooted in the same small town I’d lived in my entire life. What if Paris isn’t everything I dreamed it would be, after all? And worse—what if being with Hunter is? Nope, definitely safer to leave my dreams in the past. I’ll slip into the city, check off my list, and escape without ever seeing my best friend. I'll get this stupid trip over with, put money in the bank, and live happily ever after without him as was always the plan. Above all, I’ll finally forget that toe-curling kiss between us ever happened at all. Paris, here I come. Three sisters. Three cities. A traveling family saga full of misadventures, laughter, forgiveness, and falling in love.

Book The Man Who Shocked The World

Download or read book The Man Who Shocked The World written by Thomas Blass and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2009-02-24 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creator of the famous "Obedience Experiments," carried out at Yale in the 1960s, and originator of the "six degrees of separation" concept, Stanley Milgram was one of the most innovative scientists of our time. In this sparkling biography-the first in-depth portrait of Milgram-Thomas Blass captures the colorful personality and pioneering work of a social psychologist who profoundly altered the way we think about human nature. Born in the Bronx in 1933, Stanley Milgram was the son of Eastern European Jews, and his powerful Obedience Experiments had obvious intellectual roots in the Holocaust. The experiments, which confirmed that "normal" people would readily inflict pain on innocent victims at the behest of an authority figure, generated a firestorm of public interest and outrage-proving, as they did, that moral beliefs were far more malleable than previously thought. But Milgram also explored other aspects of social psychology, from information overload to television violence to the notion that we live in a small world. Although he died suddenly at the height of his career, his work continues to shape the way we live and think today. Blass offers a brilliant portrait of an eccentric visionary scientist who revealed the hidden workings of our very social world.
