Download or read book Between Exaltation and Infamy written by Stephen Haliczer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-08-29 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One day in 1599, in the Spanish village of Saria, seven-year-old Maria Angela Astorch fell ill and died after gorging herself on unripened almonds. Maria's sister Isabel, a nun, came to view the body with her mother superior, an ecstatic mystic and visionary named Maria Angela Serafina. Overcome by the sight of the dead girl's innocent face, Serafina began to pray fervently for the return of the child's soul to her body. Entering a trance, she had a vision in which the Virgin Mary gave her a sign. At once little Maria Angela started to show signs of life. A moment later she scrambled to the ground and was soon restored to perfect health. During the Counter-Reformation, the Church was confronted by an extraordinary upsurge of feminine religious enthusiasm like that of Serafina. Inspired by new translations of the lives of the saints, devout women all over Catholic Europe sought to imitate these "athletes of Christ" through extremes of self-abnegation, physical mortification, and devotion. As in the Middle Ages, such women's piety often took the form of ecstatic visions, revelations, voices and stigmata. Stephen Haliczer offers a comprehensive portrait of women's mysticism in Golden Age Spain, where this enthusiasm was nearly a mass movement. The Church's response, he shows, was welcoming but wary, and the Inquisition took on the task of winnowing out frauds and imposters. Haliczer draws on fifteen cases brought by the Inquisition against women accused of "feigned sanctity," and on more than two dozen biographies and autobiographies. The key to acceptance, he finds, lay in the orthodoxy of the woman's visions and revelations. He concludes that mysticism offered women a way to transcend, though not to disrupt, the control of the male-dominated Church.

Download or read book False Mystics written by Nora E. Jaffary and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: False Mystics provides a history of popular religion, race, and gender in colonial Mexico focusing on questions of spiritual and social rebellion and conformity. Nora E. Jaffary examines more than one hundred trials of ?false mystics? whom the Mexican Inquisition prosecuted in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. While the accused experienced many of the same phenomena as bona fide mystics?visions, sacred illness, and bouts of demonic possession?the Mexican tribunal condemned them nevertheless. False Mystics examines why the Catholic church viewed the accused as deviants and argues that this categorization was due in part to unconventional aspects of their spirituality and in part to contemporary social anxieties over class and race mixing, transgressions of appropriate gendered behavior, and fears of Indian and African influences on orthodox Catholicism. Jaffary examines the transformations this category of heresy underwent between Spain and the New World and explores the relationship between accusations of "false" mysticism and contemporary notions of demonic possession, sickness, and mental illness. Jaffary adopts the perspectives of visionaries to examine the influence of colonial artwork on their spiritual imaginations and to trace the reasons that their spirituality diverged from conventional expressions of piety. False Mystics illuminates the challenges that popular religion and individual spirituality posed to both the institutional church and the colonial social order.

Download or read book God in La Mancha written by Sara Tilghman Nalle and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Even as the Protestant Reformation became a permanent feature of European religious culture, a Catholic reformation was under way in Spain. Yet social historians of the Counter Reformation have written little about this movement, concentrating instead on those of Germany, France, and Italy. Sara Nalle explores this long-overlooked history in God in La Mancha, a case study of religious change in the Castilian diocese of Cuenca." "A prosperous, religiously conformist diocese located in the heart of Europe's most militantly Catholic monarchy, Cuenca had religious concerns that were typical of central Castilian - and even Italian - dioceses that were politically stable, religiously orthodox, and well-to-do. Throughout the sixteenth century, diocesan authorities, inquisitors, and local elites worked to retrain the clergy, catechize the laity, and enforce revitalized norms of Catholic belief and morality. Using the records of local religious courts, parishes, and notarial archives, Nalle shows in striking detail how the people and clergy of Cuenca learned to conform to the new standards of modern Catholicism." "God in La Mancha will be a key book in the study of the Counter Reformation's impact on popular behavior and belief. Its conclusions regarding the movement's success will stimulate further debate about the nature of religious reform in early modern Europe."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
