Book excerpt: Three decades ago in a cordoned-off corner of the developing world an angry Catholic priest armed only with pencil, paper, and crayons, declared a revolution. Today, his Human Development Foundation and Mercy Centre charity is responsible for thirty-two preschools that have taught more than twenty thousand children how to read and write. Despite the crippling neglect found in impoverishment, he is raising international scholars and injecting a sense of purpose into shantytowns and squatter camps that used to have neither.

At that time, the 1920s, the only known treatment was rest and fresh air. The climate of the American Southwest was thought to be one of the best because of the dry air and sunshine. Young Carl, although given only two years to live, went to Valmora, New Mexico where a tuberculosis sanatorium had been established in 1904 by Fr. William T. Brown. He was not only cured but went back to school and completed his medical studies. He then returned to Valmora, married Brown's daughter and later became the medical director of Valmora Sanatorium. * * * * Dorothy Simpson Beimer, a native of Las Vegas, New Mexico, is a professor emeritus from New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas. Download or read book Holiday House Call written by Jen Doyle and published by Carina Press. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Karen Carmichael prides herself on being capable, optimistic and always in control. But even neurosurgeons have breaking points, especially as the holidays approach. When Karen finds herself on the side of the road, explaining to a cop that her less-than-stellar driving was due to stress and tears rather than too much booze, it’s humiliating. When that cop turns out to be a one-night stand from her past, it’s icing on the bad-day cake. Officer John “Tuck” Tucker didn’t expect to see Karen again after their night together. The circumstances may not be ideal, but convincing this beautiful, stubborn woman to get to know him with his clothes on is more fun than he could have imagined. Karen swore she’d never fall for someone who risks his life for his job. She sees enough heartbreak at work without inviting it into her personal life, and she has no interest in becoming involved in the small town Tuck calls home. But despite valiant efforts to keep her walls up, her affection for Tuck is growing into something much stronger. With a life built around work alone looking less appealing by the day, Karen will have to take a leap of faith—and trust that Tuck will leap with her.
