Download or read book Santa Fe Modern written by Helen Thompson and published by The Monacelli Press, LLC. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First survey of modernist and contemporary architecture and interiors in the richly layered architectural history of Santa Fe Santa Fe Modern reveals the high desert landscape as an ideal setting for bold, abstracted forms of modernist houses. Wide swaths of glass, deep-set portals, long porches, and courtyards allow vistas, color, and light to become integral parts of the very being of a house, emboldening a way to experience a personal connection to the desert landscape. The architects featured draw from the New Mexican architectural heritage--they use ancient materials such as adobe in combination with steel and glass, and they apply this language to the proportions and demands exacted by today's world. The houses they have designed are confident examples of architecture that is particular to the New Mexico landscape and climate, and yet simultaneously evoke the rigorous expressions of modernism. The vigor and the allure of modern art and architecture hearten each other in a way that is visible and exciting, and this book demonstrates the synergistic relationship between art, architecture, and the land.

Book The Santa Fe House

Download or read book The Santa Fe House written by Margaret Moore Booker and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The first book to survey the historic architectural styles in Santa Fe from the seventeenth through the mid-twentieth centuries, The Santa Fe House presents in detail forty architecturally rich and picturesque houses, from the earliest one-story adobe structures, with flat roofs and an emphasis on utility and simplicity, to homes of today's "Santa Fe style," showing deep roots in Pueblo Indian, Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo traditions. When New Mexico was claimed for the United States in 1846 newcomers gradually added decorative elements from back east, creating a simplified version of the Greek revival style, known locally as the "Territorial style." The advent of the railroad brought a variety of ornate Victorian architectural styles, and when New Mexico achieved statehood in 1912, business and political leaders in Santa Fe boosted tourism by promoting its "Spanish-Pueblo Revival style" of architecture, which was based on the remaining Spanish- and Mexican-era buildings and nearby Pueblo villages." "All-new color photographs show Santa Fe's most beautiful houses as they have been carefully preserved today. With historic black and white images, maps, drawings, and other original illustrations that further enhance the architectural story of this hugely popular destination, this book is perfect for the tourists who flock to Santa Fe and to homeowners who covet the enduring adobe house style." --Book Jacket.

Book Old Santa Fe Today A History Tour of Historic Properties

Download or read book Old Santa Fe Today A History Tour of Historic Properties written by Audra Bellmore and published by . This book was released on 2022-05-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old Santa Fe Today is an engaging read about Santa Fe's architecture, history, and important figures through its culturally significant properties, among them churches, government buildings, and homes. The book also serves as a walking tour guide for locals and visitors wanting to sightsee. Originally published in 1966, Old Santa Fe Today has been used by writers and scholars exploring the history and architectural significance of Santa Fe. With new essays updating the 1991 fourth edition, this fifth edition of the classic reference book also has a complete inventory of properties--now approximately one hundred--including those recently added to the Historic Santa Fe Foundation's "Register of Properties Worthy of Preservation" since 1961. Each property entry includes revised and expanded narratives on its architecture, history, and ownership, providing social and cultural context as well. Among the Register are the former homes of past influential artists and writers such as Olive Rush and Witter Bynner. The William Penhallow Henderson House, 555 Camino del Monte Sol, was the home of the famed painter and craftsperson and his poet wife Alice Corbin Henderson. Constructed over a decade from 1917 to 1928 and designed in the Spanish Pueblo Revival Style, it would serve as a model for other artist home studios in the heart of the Santa Fe art colony. The de la Peña house located at 831 El Caminito is a nineteenth-century Spanish Pueblo adobe farmhouse owned by the de la Peña family for eighty years. Artist, writer, and historic preservationist Frank Applegate purchased the home in 1925. In the late 1930s, the National Park Service added the house to its Historic American Buildings Survey, an honor reserved for the most important historic structures in the United States.

Book Spectacle of Property

Download or read book Spectacle of Property written by John David Rhodes and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of our time at the movies is spent in other people’s homes. Cinema is, after all, often about everyday life. Spectacle of Property is the first book to address the question of the ubiquitous conjuncture of the moving image and its domestic architecture. Arguing that in cinema we pay to occupy spaces we cannot occupy, John David Rhodes explores how the house in cinema both structures and criticizes fantasies of property and ownership. Rhodes tells the story of the ambivalent but powerful pleasure we take in looking at private property onscreen, analyzing the security and ease the house promises along with the horrible anxieties it produces. He begins by laying out a theory of film spectatorship that proposes the concept of the “spectator-tenant,” with reference to films such as Gone with the Wind and The Magnificent Ambersons. The book continues with three chapters that are each occupied with a different architectural style and the films that make use of it: the bungalow, the modernist house, and the shingle style house. Rhodes considers a variety of canonical films rarely analyzed side by side, such as Psycho in relation to Grey Gardens and Meet Me in St. Louis. Among the other films discussed are Meshes of the Afternoon, Mildred Pierce, A Star Is Born, Killer of Sheep, and A Single Man. Bringing together film history, film theory, and architectural history as no book has to date, Spectacle of Property marks a new milestone in examining cinema’s relationship to realism while leaving us vastly more informed about, if less at home inside, the houses we occupy at the movies.
