Like its seemingly "adobe style-only" architecture, all one has to do is turn the corner and discover a miniature Alhambra, a Romanesque Cathedral, or a French-inspired chapel next to one of the oldest adobe chapels in the United States to realize its long historical diversity. This fusion of architectural styles is a mirror of its people, cultures and history. From its early origins, Native American presence in the area through the archaeological record is undeniable and has proved to be a force to be reckoned with as well as reconciled. It was, however, the desire of European arrivals, Spaniards, already mixed in Spain and Mexico, to create a new life, a new environment, different architecture, different government, culture and spiritual life that set the foundations for the creation of "La Villa de Santa Fe." Focusing on Santa Fe, which was long one of the largest cities west of the Mississippi, Deena González demonstrates that women's responses to the conquest were remarkably diverse and that their efforts to preserve their culture were complex and long-lasting. Drawing on a range of sources, from newspapers to wills, deeds, and court records, González shows that the change to U.S. territorial status did little to enrich or empower the Spanish-Mexican inhabitants. The vast majority, in fact, found themselves quickly impoverished, and this trend toward low-paid labor, particularly for women, continues even today. González both examines the long-term consequences of colonization and draws illuminating parallels with the experiences of other minorities. Refusing the Favor also describes how and why Spanish-Mexican women have remained invisible in the histories of the region for so long. Wroth's book Hispanic Crafts of the Southwest (1977) built upon E. Boyd's work by bringing contemporary practitioners of the traditional arts into the discussion, and Christian Images in Hispanic New Mexico (1982) changed the course of scholarship on the artistic style of New Mexican religious imagery. Wroth's endeavors were not limited to Spanish Colonial art. In 2000, Wroth's exhibition and book Ute Indian Arts and Culture from Prehistory to the New Millennium were considered groundbreaking for placing Ute art in the context of Ute history and world view. In 2010, he brought together years of research to the exhibition and book Converging Streams: Art of the Hispanic and Native American Southwest. Wroth also wrote poetry and about poetry, and helped found the poetry review Coyote's Journal. This volume explores themes important to Wroth broadly related to the art, history, and culture of New Spain, as well as cross-cultural interactions of Hispanos and Native Americans. With more than 180 color illustrations, Cultural Convergence presents interdisciplinary essays by an esteemed group of scholars and writers, and a selection of works by artists he knew and admired.
