Divergence statistics, based on maximum likelihood estimators, as well as Wald’s statistics, likelihood ratio statistics and Rao’s score statistics, share several optimum asymptotic properties, but are highly non-robust in cases of model misspecification under the presence of outlying observations. It is well-known that a small deviation from the underlying assumptions on the model can have drastic effect on the performance of these classical tests. Specifically, this book presents a robust version of the classical Wald statistical test, for testing simple and composite null hypotheses for general parametric models, based on minimum divergence estimators.

Book excerpt: When fitting observations from a complex survey, the standard regression model assumes that the expected value of the difference between the dependent variable and its model-based prediction is zero, regardless of the values of the explanatory variables. A rarely failing extended regression model assumes only that the model error is uncorrelated with the model’s explanatory variables. When the standard model holds, it is possible to create alternative analysis weights that retain the consistency of the model-parameter estimates while increasing their efficiency by scaling the inverse-probability weights by an appropriately chosen function of the explanatory variables. When a regression model is used to impute for missing item values in a complex survey and when item missingness is a function of the explanatory variables of the regression model and not the item value itself, near unbiasedness of an estimated item mean requires that either the standard regression model for the item in the population holds or the analysis weights incorporate a correctly specified and consistently estimated probability of item response. By estimating the parameters of the probability of item response with a calibration equation, one can sometimes account for item missingness that is (partially) a function of the item value itself.

In this book, he brings together his views on predictive or observable inference and its advantages over parametric inference. While the book discusses a variety of approaches to prediction including those based on parametric, nonparametric, and nonstochastic statistical models, it is devoted mainly to predictive applications of the Bayesian approach. It not only substitutes predictive analyses for parametric analyses, but it also presents predictive analyses that have no real parametric analogues. It demonstrates that predictive inference can be a critical component of even strict parametric inference when dealing with interim analyses. This approach to predictive inference will be of interest to statisticians, psychologists, econometricians, and sociologists.

Particular topics discussed are the gradual deterioration in per capita crop production and the economic roots of the Bengal famine in 1943. The second part of the book deals with the factors that directly or indirectly affected crop trends. Amongst these are the effect of crop prices on area sown. Trends in physical capacity of Bengal agriculture are analysed and compared with those in the visible supply of labour and crop output. The problem of agricultural credit is discussed and the progress of the Co-operative credit movement evaluated.
