Book Sanitation in War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sanitation in War Classic Reprint written by P. S. Lelean and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sanitation in War To the attainment of that aim there is one essential condition - the intelligent co-operation of the whole personnel of the field force - and it is upon the knowledge of sanitation possessed by medical officers that this essential condition primarily depends. To the R.A.M.C. officer the sanitary methods of field service are necessarily familiar; the civilian practitioner who serves with the army for the first time finds himself at a grave disadvantage when faced by problems in the solution of which the training provided by the civil medical curriculum affords little assistance. In order therefore to lighten the difficulties of those practitioners who have loyally volunteered their services, a series of lectures dealing with subjects of practical value in war have been organized at the R.A.M. College. The appreciation of those gentlemen who have attended these lectures has indicated that the information thus summarized would prove of value to those who have been unable to attend the various courses arranged. The wider the scope and the more precise the knowledge of medical officers on all matters affecting the health of the troops, the greater will be the measure of success attending their efforts to maintain that fighting efficiency upon which depend to so great an extent the prospects of a speedy and successful conclusion of the war. Download or read book Public Sanitation and Other Papers Classic Reprint written by Clement A. Whiting and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-15 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Sanitation and Other Papers During the period of our Civil War the world was appalled at the hideous loss of life. During the four years of war the Federal army lost by those directly killed in battle, men. It is probable that the loss on the Southern side was equal to this and possibly greater, but if this were true, even if this enormous number had to be doubled, it would still be less than the number of children under two years of age who are reported to have died in the four years between 1903 and 1907, for during that period there were reported the deaths of children under two years. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Military Hygiene and Sanitation This short treatise on Military Hygiene and Sanitation is founded on the lectures delivered by me while Professor of Hygiene at the Royal Army Medical College. I have not attempted to deal in detail with all the problems of hygiene, and in particular I have omitted - as, for instance, in the question of house drainage - those which are liberally treated in the ordinary textbooks. In considering the prevention of infectious diseases, also, I have limited myself to those which are most important in war. I have not therefore discussed such ailments as Malta fever and Tuberculosis, for instance, with, which the army is concerned mainly in peace-time, under conditions not differing materially from those which confront the Medical Officer of Health in civil practice. I have to acknowledge much kind assistance from Captain N. Dunbar Walker, Royal Army Medical Corps, who has helped me greatly with suggestions and in the preparation of some of the plates. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Military Sanitation and Management of the Sanitary Service It is quite evident to you, as common sense teaches, that it is desirable to have men accepted in the Army who are the best physical specimens, and also men somewhat intelligent and mentally alert. In a small army when men desire to enlist in great numbers this selection can be made; but there are so many men who have slight imperfections that this degree of perfection will never be reached when a great number of men are called out for active ser vice. While these facts were deplorable, they were the results of extraneous circumstances and would be remedied as soon as conditions returned to normal. Book The Sanitary Commission of the United States Army

Download or read book The Sanitary Commission of the United States Army written by United States Sanitary Commission and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sanitary Commission of the United States Army: A Succinct Narrative of Its Works and Purposes The United States Sanitary Commission may safely leave its history to be written in the Annals of the War. In that history, however, the public has an interest which calls for the occasional publication of such records of the work in progress, and such a description of its methods, purposes, and results, as shall correctly set forth the practical features of this great system of supplementary aid. This volume has been prepared with the design of meeting the demand for a succinct narrative of the origin, purposes, progress, and present condition of the Commission's methods and departments of labor. Connected outlines, together with reviews and condensed abstracts of current reports, are made to bring forward a concise record of the work, from the period of its inception to the present time. The faithfulness of the narrative has been verified at every step, by one who has attentively observed the Commission's plans and labors from the beginning, and his object will be fully attained if the book conveys to the reader's mind a truthful and connected view of the whole scheme - past and present - of the objects, spirit, and practical operations of the Commission. A French military writer has recently said, "It is one of the greatest characteristics of the present age, that the cause of humanity has become identified with the strength of armies" And, in this view, with a knowledge of our campaigns and battles, and with the records of the Sanitary Commission before us, it would be difficult to say whether this grand system of sanitary care and succor in the Federal army is more important as a work of humane benificence than as a patriotic scheme of aid to the effective strength of our military forces. Book Social Hygiene and the War

Download or read book Social Hygiene and the War written by Katharine Bement Davis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Hygiene and the War: Woman's Part in the Campaign Beginning with the Pilgrim Mothers, in every crisis which our country has had to face, the women have stood shoulder to shoulder with the men. In the days of the first settlers, the women were not afraid of the perils of an unknown country, savage Indians, cold, hunger and fatigue, when the call came to help their men in opening up a new world. They struggled and endured for the same ideals of freedom and opportunity which animated their fathers, husbands, and brothers. Through all our early wars with the Indians and enemies from across the sea, noble examples of heroic service stand out. But it was the steadfastness of the rank and file of the women behind the men that in each instance made victory possible. In the Civil War, the women of the country for the first time on a large scale engaged in war activities, as army nurses and as ministers to the comfort of the sick and wounded in hundreds of different ways. In the perfecting of organizations for the financial support of war activities, they had their initiation at that time.
