The New Ornamental Garden shows how heat, cold, water availability, rainfall patterns, length of growing season, evaporation rate and humidity influence plant growth in Australia, from the wet sub-tropics to the temperate climate of southern Australia. It also discusses the influence of microclimates within a garden: dry sun, dry shade, moist sun, moist shade, seaside conditions, exposed sites, urban situations and root competition from eucalyptus and allelopaths. The main focus of the book is the plant index, which contains notes on hundreds of plant varieties and how they function in the garden. All gardeners will benefit from reading this book!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The night caretaker in a local cemetery became witness to a horrifying event. The body of a mutilated woman fell from the sky. The caretaker investigates only to be terrified by childish laughter from the woods that bordered the cemetery. In his terror, ran for his life ending up in the custody of the local police station. The case fell upon the lap of Senior Inspector Manny Panganiban who was puzzled by the case and suspected that the man in custody may both be the witness and the culprit. The only thing that troubled him, was the absence of blood. Thus, ordered PO1 Eunice Salve to research the same MO or anything that can shed light upon the unique nature of the case. She came upon an article by a certain Dr. Javier that she assumed can help in the investigation. A meeting with Javier revealed certain aspects about the community that was not common knowledge. About similar mutilations in the past, all unsolved and about a house that everyone seems to have forgotten. Then people began to disappear. Ghostly manifestations occurred. And there is the deaf-mute that grew up in the fringes of society, distrusting people and their good intentions until he met Jennifer. The illusory feelings he had for her was shattered and he withdrew from society. Alone and close to death he was saved by a malevolent creature that offered him life only to find out that not all second chances are worth taking. With things getting out of hand and with the approach of a typhoon, Panganiban, Salve and Javier along with others banded together to solve the mystery, find the abductees and put the case to rest. Unaware that they were about to clash with dark forces that had roamed the land for centuries and to a showdown beneath the bowels of an old house that nobody knew existed. Some will die, some will survive, others will find redemption and renewal.

Book excerpt: KT Euzen, a lifelong learner, explores the joy of being an entrepreneur in this memoir. She chronicles a transformative decade across France, Bhutan, China, and Singapore, allowing readers to traverse diverse cultures and join her on a quest toward knowledge and happiness. Her odyssey towards joy began with introspection, a message she highlights with vivid stories of individuals finding bliss in passion, mindfulness, generosity, and authenticity. A theme running throughout the book is that it’s often the simplest things that bring us the greatest joy. A burst of laughter from a baby, the aroma of a home-cooked meal, the delicate touch of a loved one’s hand, the comforting hug of a friend—these moments, though seemingly trivial, hold within them the essence of the universe. She also highlights how happiness is found in our struggles, as well as in the resilience we must show to overcome challenges. The author also delves into her Ph.D. work on Bhutan’s unique happiness ethos, offering profound insights. In the end, her book is not only a memoir – it’s a passport to understanding joy’s global language.

Book Everything You Need to Know about Birding and Backyard Bird Attraction

Download or read book Everything You Need to Know about Birding and Backyard Bird Attraction written by Alan Pistorius and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 1998 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With equal measures of wit, scientific wisdom, and homespun common sense, Alan Pistorius makes his lifelong love of birds come alive for anyone who wants to take up birding as a hobby or merely gain more pleasure from the birds around the home, cottage, or camp. With diagrams, illustrations, and full-color photographs throughout, this is a completely revised and updated version of Pistorius's popular Country Journal Book of Birding and Bird Attraction. The author advises readers on how to make their back yards havens for local birds, what constitutes proper food for birds, what to look for in well-designed feeders, how to build appropriate houses, and how to make baths that birds will actually use. Pistorius's style is lighthearted and humorous, and he's never averse to directing a little gentle humor at the foibles of fellow devotees when they begin to take themselves and their hobby too seriously.

Book excerpt: The OHara family has lived on Lake Road for generationssince 1825, in fact. Their fates have been as varied as the lakes depths, but 1975 was a pivotal time in the life of the family. It was the year that Lily OHara was born and her mother, Moya, and brother, Brannen, disappeared. It was assumed that the two had drowned, but the bodies were never recovered. Her father, Cillian, could offer no explanation for the disappearance of his wife and son. The police and locals believed he was guilty of murder, but without bodies no charges could be laid. The young father attempted to raise his baby daughter with the help of his unmarried brother and sister, Darcy and Billie. The weight of loss and presumed guilt drove Cillian to take his own life when Lily was only nine months old. The novel commences with twenty-six-year-old Lily watching the now diminishing lake and thinking about her life. She tries to avoid dwelling on her familys demise. Billie and Darcy are now dead, and she knows little about the events from 1975. But the past can never be truly silenced, and the noise of those terrible losses roars back to life when bones are discovered in the drying mud of the now-empty lake. Lily is an archivist and curator. In her working life she makes sense of the past lives of other people by assigning meaning to the artefacts they leave behind. It becomes her mission to make sense of her fathers actions by examining what evidence remains. She will also come to accept that she, like all of us, has been shaped by the past. She must decide if she will be consumed or strengthened by what she finds out.

Book We Were Not the Enemy

Download or read book We Were Not the Enemy written by Heidi Gurcke Donald and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-01-26 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States clandestinely funds the operation of a huge prison in Cuba. Men, women, and children are spirited away from their homes and imprisoned indefinitely. No charges are made; no legal counsel is allowed. Newspapers fill with stories of espionage and enemies. Current events? No. During World War II, the United States used tactics remarkably similar to those in use today against presumed terrorists. By 1939, President Franklin Roosevelt had covertly authorized J. Edgar Hoover's Secret Intelligence Service to begin surveillance of Axis nationals in Latin America. Believing that "all German nationals without exception [are] dangerous," the United States surreptitiously pressured Latin-American countries to arrest and deport more than four thousand civilians of German ethnicity to the United States. There, many languished in internment camps, while others were shipped to war-torn Germany. As my parents, German-born Werner Gurcke and his American wife, Starr, began their lives together in Costa Rica, he was falsely labeled one of the country's most dangerous enemy aliens. Soon she, too, was considered "dangerous to the safety of the United Nations." From newlyweds to parents, innocent civilians to dangerous enemies, prisoners to internees, We Were Not the Enemy tells their story.
