Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a family spends a day at the beach, the children investigate various footprints to see what type of creatures live along the shoreline. Rhyming text turns a sandy beach into an outdoor classroom. The tracks and habits of local wildlife, including hopping sandpipers, scuttling crabs, and burrowing turtles, are identified and explained for young ecology detectives. Even Daddy's feet make an appearance! And at day's end, it's time for tired feet to make their way home. STEM-based back matter includes information on how clues like footprints can identify the type of wildlife inhabiting any given habitat.

Book excerpt: On October 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy made landfall in the Mid-Atlantic region. The devastation she would bring to the New York and New Jersey was widespread and unimaginable. Though warnings had been issued for days and many evacuated their homes and offices, thousands stood in the path of one of the strongest storms in the history of America. Winds on Long Island reached 90 mph. Large sections of Lower Manhattan flooded. Fire in Queens destroyed more than 100 buildings. In New Jersey, 2.6 million homes were without people and nearly 40 people were killed. A 50-foot piece of the Atlantic City Boardwalk washed away and half the city of Hoboken was under water. Hundreds of thousands were left without power and water, with dwindling food supplies. Amidst this devastation, Sandy inspired courage and hope in many New Yorkers, giving them the will to triumph against incalculable odds. Seeking shelter and the basic necessities of life, thousands continued to fight on to simply survive the harshest of conditions and help others do the same. These gripping moments of ruin and recovery are captured in "Sandy: A Story of Complete Devastation, Courage, and Recovery," which features award-winning stories and nearly 100 vivid full-color images from the "New York Post." A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each book will be donated to the Mayor's Fund for New York City and Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Unicorn in my Forest, A Rabbit in my Bed begins when Michelle, a thirty-year-old woman, decides she needs to get into therapy because she is having a lot of problems coping with her life. As her therapy continues, she discovers that she has repressed her memories of the physical, sexual, and emotional abuse she endured throughout her childhood. Her psychologist Tim understands that due to the trauma she faced, Michelle survived the only way she could, by constructing a safe fantasy world in her head. She also learned to feel shame and guilt instead of the healthy self-esteem that would have naturally developed had she been brought up in a loving nurturing environment. Tim creates a safe place where Michelle can become that little girl again and confront the monsters that haunted her. It is only by regressing back to her childhood and transferring all her unfulfilled needs for love, nurturing, and acceptance onto Tim that she is able to access the horrible memories of what happened to her as a child. She is also blindsided by the overwhelming anger she feels toward her mother for not protecting her. Once Michelle is able to replace her guilt and shame with a healthy self-esteem, she realizes that all the significant men in her life have shaped her into servicing their needs, with no regard for her welfare whatsoever. With Tim's guidance, she sees how these men have replicated her father's abuse to varying degrees. The book fluctuates between Michelle's therapy sessions and her life with her abusive husband, clueless mother, young son, and schizophrenic sister; her renewed relationship with the sexual predator who molested her throughout her teenage years; and her new deceitful boyfriend.

Book excerpt: This is the story of a pimp, Shame, the women he uses and abuses and how he recruited and maintained them on the street. First the street is revealed through Shame's mother, Latisa, as she works for different pimps, including a pimp/gambler who uses her to entice customers with live sex shows until they crossed organized crime. Shame has many run-ins with the law as a juvenile, but escapes detention while attending his mother's funeral. He falls in love, but is rejected when his lover finds out how old he is. As an adult, he encounters a couple of seasoned prostitutes. He convinces them to make him the kind of pimp they want. He quickly develops into a pimp like the rest of the vultures on the street. In the course of his initiation, a gangster pimp forcibly takes one of his women. Her wife-in-law attempts to rescue her. Shame moves on, recruiting young victims and learning from other pimps the ins and outs of the street. He meets a young woman and against the unwritten rules of the street falls in love. Fighting against his feelings he cons her into believing he's in trouble to get her into prostitution. When she finds out he is a pimp, she turns on him. She is kidnapped and drugged into submission. She tries to escape, but is found dead of a drug overdose. A policewoman who grew up with the drug victim conducts her own investigation. She goes undercover as a prostitute and another of Shame's women dies in a suspicious manner. She joins forces with a D.C. vice detective and they obtain enough evidence to get Shame arrested. The very dramatic trial does not turn out the way they expected and the victims of Shame decide to get their own justice.
