Ma gli ultimi anni della sua vita furono tragici: le precarie condizioni economiche, la cattiva salute, la perdita progressiva dell’ispirazione narrativa e infine il ricovero della moglie in manicomio ridussero lo scrittore alla disperazione, fino al gesto drammatico con cui pose termine ai suoi giorni.
