Book excerpt: San Francisco in Ruins documents the horror of the 1906 devastating earthquake and subsequent fire. The San Francisco earthquake is the first natural disaster to be thoroughly photographed, as it occurred. This is how author A.M. Allison described what the earthquake and fire left behind: "In three days, which seemed only as so many hours, there faded out of existence noble business blocks, grand and imposing structures, beautiful and superb residences the homes of the Argonauts, the sea kings, mining barons and merchant princes, together with the marts and dwellings of those who toil and delve and go down to the sea in ships, completely desolating and razing by fire three-fourths of this once beautiful metropolis of the whole Pacific Coast on either the northern or southern continents."The photographs in San Francisco in Ruins are the work of James D. Givens (1863-1939). Givens served as the civilian "post photographer" for the army.San Francisco in Ruins records the catastrophic 1906 earthquake and fire, frame by frame, from the ruins to the ashes to the refugee camps.

Documenting 100 years since that spectacular rebirth, this lushly illustrated history reveals the soul of San Francisco. From the majesty of the Golden Gate Bridge to the back alleys of Chinatown, exclusive Nob Hill to the gritty sentinel of Alcatraz, the happenings, larger-than-life personalities and watershed events in the City by the Bay come bursting to life. Written and photographed by people who know it best, the book traces San Francisco's era of Flower Power, the music and sexual revolutions of the 1960s, Gay Liberation, and the city's emergence as a world-class center of social and technological innovation.

Book The Ruins of California

Book excerpt: For the Ruin family in 1970s California, as described by the precocious young Inez, life is complex. Her father, Paul, is self-obsessed, intrusive, and brilliant. He's also twice divorced, leaving Inez to bounce between two worlds and embracing neither-that of Paul's bohemian life in San Francisco and the more sedate world of her mother Connie, a Latin bombshell who plays tennis and attends EST seminars in the suburbs. As Inez progresses through high school we are witness to a remarkable family saga that renders a strange and fascinating slice of America in transition-one like the Ruins of California themselves, at once bold and innocent, creative and chaotic, obsessed and liberating.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from San Francisco in Ruins: A Pictorial History of Eight Score Photo-Views of the Earthquake Effects, Flames' Havoc, Ruins Everywhere, Relief Camps It being quickly seen that the panic-stricken people would soon become a fleeing, dazed and terror-awed multitude, General Frederick Funston, com manding the Department of California, United States Army, with headquarters at the Presidio, immediately ordered out the cavalry, infantry and artillery forces under his command, who aided and directed the fleeing populace, gath ered up and succored the wounded, established emergency hospitals, and policed the city. At the same time menoof-wars-men from the Mare Island Navy Yard, consisting of the battleship Ohio, the cruiser Chicago, and the torpedo boat destroyer Paul Jones, together with the ships of the United States Army Transport Service, and all available steam craft, attacked the flames along the water front and succeeded in saving much wharfage and the Ferry building, which is the principal gateway from the mainland. Aided, ordered and guarded by the United States Army and Marine forces, assisted by the California National Guard, who were at once called out by the Governor, George C. Pardee, the excited and frenzied San Franciscans made their way to squares, parks and the open hills, over two hundred thousand fleeing to these places of refuge and another hundred thousand making their way by ferry-boats and other craft across the bay to the cities of Berkeley, Oakland and Alameda, caring for naught except to get away from the awful havoc and destruction of the place they once proudly called their City. Book Disaster by the Bay

Download or read book Disaster by the Bay written by Harry Paul Jeffers and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A colorful city -- eighth largest in the country -- reduced to rubble by a massive earthquake and then consumed by flames... In this vivid, fast-paced chronicle of what has been called the worst peacetime disaster to ever befall America, veteran journalist and author H. Paul Jeffers provides a gripping account of the nightmarish days in April 1906 when earthquake and fire devastated San Francisco. Drawing on a wide range of eyewitness material, Jeffers follows a variety of individuals as they come to terms with an unthinkable event. Celebrities like Enrico Caruso and John Barrymore; the civil and military authorities who tried to bring order out of the chaos; merchants who struggled heroically to save their shops and goods from the ruins and the flames; the suddenly homeless ordinary men and women who composed messages on scraps of paper and sticks of wood (all of which, incredibly, the postal service actually delivered) to tell of their survival: from all these and many other perspectives Jeffers creates a riveting mosaic of catastrophe and its aftermath. With the one-hundredth anniversary of the quake approaching, this skillful and engrossing narrative will be of keen interest to readers from west coast to east. Book jacket.
