Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The San Francisco Bay Area is one of the most beautiful and romantic spots in America, and for over a hundred years some of the country's greatest architects have graced the region with their work. Bay Area Style houses exhibit a distinct and frequently dramatic relationship to the out-of-doors while suggesting a feeling of informality. Emerging from the California Craftsman Style, these houses use natural materials, including wood and river stone. Bay Area Style showcases a variety of the most extraordinary homes from this remarkable region and spans more than a century, revealing the development of a rich tradition. These houses capture the spirit of the place and embody the region's unique style. Featured are houses by architectural luminaries Ernest Coxhead, Bernard Maybeck, Julia Morgan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Raphael Soriano, and Charles Moore, among others.

Book San Francisco Houses

Download or read book San Francisco Houses written by Ana Cristina G. Cañizares and published by teNeues. This book was released on 2003 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: San Francisco has long been one of America's landmark cities, a gleaming jewel of the West Coast surrounded on three sides by water, well known for its hilly streets, Victorian residences, and a free spiritness that made it the home of the Beat Generation, flower power, and gay pride. But over time, this "storybook city of spires and minarets" has also made a name for itself in the world of architecture and design. Victorian architecture gradually gave way to Art Deco and was followed by a modern movement that today favors a mixture of both minimalist and more decorative styles. This elegant, lavishly illustrated book takes the reader on an exciting tour through the latest in San Francisco's residential design and uncovers yet another dynamic facit of this unique North American city.

Today, however, punishing rents and the increasingly prohibitive cost of ownership have turned housing into the foremost symbol of inequality and an economy gone wrong. Nowhere is this more visible than in the San Francisco Bay Area, where fleets of private buses ferry software engineers past the tarp-and-plywood shanties of the homeless. The adage that California is a glimpse of the nation’s future has become a cautionary tale. With propulsive storytelling and ground-level reporting, New York Times journalist Conor Dougherty chronicles America’s housing crisis from its West Coast epicenter, peeling back the decades of history and economic forces that brought us here and taking readers inside the activist movements that have risen in tandem with housing costs.

Book excerpt: Land the deals you want and develop your instincts with million-dollar negotiation techniques After selling over $3 Billion in real estate, including the most expensive one-bedroom house in history, Josh Altman, co-star of the hit show Million-Dollar Listing Los Angeles, wants to teach you the real estate sales and negotiation tactics that have made him one of America’s top agents. Buying or selling a house, whether for a client or yourself, is one of the most important (and most stressful) deals anyone can make, demanding emotional intelligence and a solid set of negotiating skills. But by mastering the same techniques that sell multi-million-dollar homes in Bel Air and Beverly Hills, you can attract buyers and close deals on any property. Josh breaks down the art of real estate into three simple parts. First, he’ll help you get business in the door during the Opening. Then he takes you step-by-step through the Work: everything between the first handshake and the last. And finally, the Close, the last step that ensures all your hard work pays off as you seal the deal. Learn how to open with a prospect, work the deal, close, open, and repeat Build and market your reputation, creating more sales opportunities Develop the traits of a closer in you and your team Drive the deal forward and get the best price for your property by creating desire, scarcity, and demand Successful real estate sales are driven by the same principles, whether they happen in the Hollywood Hills or just down the street. Josh wants to put those principles, and the techniques for applying them, in your hands. Learn them and discover what you can achieve.

Book San Francisco Relocated

Download or read book San Francisco Relocated written by Diane C. Donovan and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-12 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: San Francisco's colorful history has been explored so extensively that it is surprising to note that its moved buildings remain one of the city's best-kept secrets. Reports are widely scattered in newspapers and architectural references; yet, despite the fact that the city's relocations are second only to Chicago's, there are no books in print concerning this curious history--until now. And it is a long, lively tale indeed. Beginning in 1850 and continuing today, it involves hundreds of moved structures, from houses and apartment buildings to churches and schools. Buildings were relocated for many reasons, from street modifications in the early 1900s to the advent of freeways and Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) in the 1950s and 1960s. Buildings were cut in half and moved in pieces, disassembled and moved brick by brick, or (more commonly) moved intact--some as heavy as 9,000 tons or as long as 110 feet. Buildings moved to San Francisco via ship around Cape Horn, traveled across town using horses and wagons or (later) trucks, and were barged over the Bay.

Book The Perfect 100 000 House

Download or read book The Perfect 100 000 House written by Karrie Jacobs and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2007-05-29 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A home of one’s own has always been a cornerstone of the American dream, fulfilling like nothing else the desire for comfort, financial security, independence, and with a little luck, even a touch of distinctive character, or even beauty. But what we have come to regard as almost a national birthright has recently begun to elude more and more prospective homebuyers. Where housing is concerned, affordable and well-crafted rarely exist together. Or do they? For years, founding editor-in-chief of Dwell magazine and noted architecture and design critic Karrie Jacobs had been confronting this question both professionally and personally. Finally, she decided to see for herself whether it was possible to build the home of her own dreams for a reasonable sum. The Perfect $100,000 House is the story of that quest, a search that takes her from a two-week crash course in housebuilding in Vermont to a road trip of some 14,000 miles. In the course of her journey Jacobs encounters a group of intrepid and visionary architects and builders working to revolutionize the way Americans thinks about homes, about construction techniques, and about the very idea of community. By her trip’s end Jacobs, has not only had a practical and sobering education in the economics, aesthetics, and politics of homebuilding, but has been spurred to challenge her own deeply held beliefs about what constitutes an ideal home. The Perfect $100,000 House is a compelling and inspiring demonstration that we can live in homes that are sensible, modest, and beautiful.

Book Garden Neighborhoods of San Francisco

Download or read book Garden Neighborhoods of San Francisco written by Richard Brandi and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-05-05 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: San Francisco is not known for detached houses with landscaped setbacks, lining picturesque, park-side streets. But between 1905 and 1924, thirty-six such neighborhoods, called residence parks, were proposed or built in the city. Hundreds like them were constructed across the country yet they are not well known or understood today. This book examines the city planning aspects of residence parks in a new way, with tracing how developers went about the business of building them, on different sites and for different markets, and how they kept out black and Asian residents.
