Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Patriot, 1918 Many of our men sat smoking in meditative silence, thinking of the poor fellows lying out there in the field so white and still. They were no longer the enemy, simply the beings of God's creation. Those bodies once moved with the life and vitality He had given them. Mortal hands had destroyed the body, but the soul, impervious to human destruction, took its place in eternity. As they sat there with these thoughts in mind there crept into their consciousness this proposition, Man has destroyed that which God has made, and the deep silence with which it was accepted made one feel he was witnessing an atonement between man and the Almighty. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The San Francisco Illustrated Wasp, Vol. 4: May 15th, 1880 If Christian ministers fear that a Play could batter the fortress of Christianity, then they seem to think very little of its intrinsic power. The Jew has no fear in his belief. To promote man's activity, to encourage him to think, and to put him in the way of thinking rightly, are plain duties, but to try to insert ready made Opinions into his mind is a slander upon the rights of man hood. The strangest thing of all is, that where nothing is perfect, there should exist men sufficiently simple minded to think of preachers as being such, when we have daily proof of their average delinquencies. Book Genocide

  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2016-11-01

Download or read book Genocide written by Norman M. Naimark and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genocide occurs in every time period and on every continent. Using the 1948 U.N. definition of genocide as its departure point, this book examines the main episodes in the history of genocide from the beginning of human history to the present. Norman M. Naimark lucidly shows that genocide both changes over time, depending on the character of major historical periods, and remains the same in many of its murderous dynamics. He examines cases of genocide as distinct episodes of mass violence, but also in historical connection with earlier episodes. Unlike much of the literature in genocide studies, Naimark argues that genocide can also involve the elimination of targeted social and political groups, providing an insightful analysis of communist and anti-communist genocide. He pays special attention to settler (sometimes colonial) genocide as a subject of major concern, illuminating how deeply the elimination of indigenous peoples, especially in Africa, South America, and North America, influenced recent historical developments. At the same time, the "classic" cases of genocide in the twentieth Century - the Armenian Genocide, the Holocaust, Rwanda, and Bosnia -- are discussed, together with recent episodes in Darfur and Congo.

Cur-ney must be so glad! And now the wasp will have to take it all back. Mr. Center says that Brother Temple looks like a leader, to which Mr. Sax replied, yes, he has the lead in him to which our Dutch boarder said, he'll sing 'em a lied, and to which his wife said, leider! Harry Maynard, who broke a looney fel low's leg, which is not punishable by law, had himself roughly handled by the broken leg's brother, which is; so the broken leg's brother is arrested on bail and Harry is res ing on bed, getting ready for another break, may be. We are going to have a great time at resur rection and burying here. It seems they have buried the wrong man, and now they have to undo the whole thing and do it over again. Sire, he responded promptly, I have oftener done it for five sous, - the sol diers' pay of the time. Gustavus asked of a pretty g1r1 going to church, whether she ever expected to get to Heaven. Not until I have paid my rent, aptly said the girl. Gustavus paid it. Mazarin asked of students an explanation, why a glass of champagne has a clearer ring than one filled with claret. We have not the means to test the experiment, was the laconic reply, and it had its effect. A grandiloquent speaker extolling his per sonal worth and services to Vespasian, plead for a pension.
