Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Abolitionism and the Persistence of Slavery in Italian States 1750 1850

Download or read book Abolitionism and the Persistence of Slavery in Italian States 1750 1850 written by Giulia Bonazza and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-13 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a pioneering study of slavery in the Italian states. Documenting previously unstudied cases of slavery in six Italian cities—Naples, Caserta, Rome, Palermo, Livorno and Genoa—Giulia Bonazza investigates why slavery survived into the middle of the nineteenth century, even as the abolitionist debate raged internationally and most states had abolished it. She contextualizes these cases of residual slavery from 1750–1850, focusing on two juridical and political watersheds: after the Napoleonic period, when the Italian states (with the exception of the Papal States) adopted constitutions outlawing slavery; and after the Congress of Vienna, when diplomatic relations between the Italian states, France and Great Britain intensified and slavery was condemned in terms that covered only the Atlantic slave trade. By excavating the lives of men and women who remained in slavery after abolition, this book sheds new light on the broader Mediterranean and transatlantic dimensions of slavery in the Italian states.

Book The Role of Catalysis for the Sustainable Production of Bio fuels and Bio chemicals

Download or read book The Role of Catalysis for the Sustainable Production of Bio fuels and Bio chemicals written by Kostas Triantafyllidis and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Role of Catalysis for the Sustainable Production of Bio-fuels and Bio-chemicals describes the importance of catalysis for the sustainable production of biofuels and biochemicals, focused primarily on the state-of-the-art catalysts and catalytic processes expected to play a decisive role in the "green" production of fuels and chemicals from biomass. In addition, the book includes general elements regarding the entire chain of biomass production, conversion, environment, economy, and life-cycle assessment. Very few books are available on catalysis in production schemes using biomass or its primary conversion products, such as bio-oil and lignin. This book fills that gap with detailed discussions of: - Catalytic pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass - Hybrid biogasoline by co-processing in FCC units - Fischer-Tropsch synthesis to biofuels (biomass-to-liquid process) - Steam reforming of bio-oils to hydrogen With energy prices rapidly rising, environmental concerns growing, and regulatory apparatus evolving, this book is a resource with tutorial, research, and technological value for chemists, chemical engineers, policymakers, and students. - Includes catalytic reaction mechanism schemes and gives a clear understanding of catalytic processes - Includes flow diagrams of bench-, pilot- and industrial-scale catalytic processing units and demonstrates the various process technologies involved, enabling easy selection of the best process - Incorporates many tables, enabling easy comparison of data based on a critical review of the available literature

Book A Companion to Sardinian History 500 1500

Download or read book A Companion to Sardinian History 500 1500 written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-08-28 with total page 681 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first English-language survey of medieval and modern Sardinia, this volume offers access to long-awaited European scholarship on a critical missing link in the Mediterranean. Based on new archaeological fieldwork and current research from a variety of academic perspectives— architecture, colonialism, ecclesiastic history, cartography, demography, law, musicology, politics, trade, and urban planning—the authors provide the foundation to incorporate Sardinia into a broader European history. Among other contributions, archaeology adds critical insight into the relationship between Christian, Muslim, and Jewish inhabitants of Sardinia, through examinations of urban and rural settlement patterns. This volume aims to stimulate further analysis of the critical role Sardinia has played as one of the largest and most strategically located islands in the Mediterranean. Contributors are Laura Biccone, Nathalie Bouloux, Henri Bresc, Marco Cadinu, Roberto Coroneo, Laura Galoppini, Henrike Haug, Michelle Hobart, Rossana Martorelli, Giampaolo Mele, Marco Milanese, Giovanni Murgia, Gian Giacomo Ortu, Daniela Rovina, Olivetta Schena, Cecilia Tasca, Raimondo Turtas, and Corrado Zedda.

Download or read book La medalla de San Benito written by Dom Prosper Guéranger Abad and published by LIBROS DE CARLOS URIBE. This book was released on 2016-07-14 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Barrio Rhythm

  • Author : Steven Joseph Loza
  • Publisher : University of Illinois Press
  • Release : 1993
  • ISBN : 9780252062889
  • Pages : 396 pages

Download or read book Barrio Rhythm written by Steven Joseph Loza and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hit movie La Bamba (based on the life of Richie Valens), the versatile singer Linda Ronstadt, and the popular rock group Los Lobos all have roots in the dynamic music of the Mexican-American community in East Los Angeles. With the recent "Eastside Renaissance" in the area, barrio music has taken on symbolic power throughout the Southwest, yet its story has remained undocumented and virtually untold. In Barrio Rhythm, Steven Loza brings this hidden history to life, demonstrating the music's essential role in the cultural development of East Los Angeles and its influence on mainstream popular culture. Drawing from oral histories and other primary sources, as well as from appropriate representative songs, Loza provides a historical overview of the music from the nineteenth century to the present and offers in-depth profiles of nine Mexican-American artists, groups, and entrepreneurs in Southern California from the post-World War II era to the present. His interviews with many of today's most influential barrio musicians, including members of Los Lobos, Eddie Cano, Lalo Guerrero, and Willie chronicle the cultural forces active in this complex urban community.

Book The Baths of Acqui

Download or read book The Baths of Acqui written by Alessandro Martini and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The great future ambitions of Acqui, a European spa city, are rooted in its history, of which this book tells the story. As in other localities that were made famous (and attractive) by their thermal waters, it is the spa that has given rise to its economic well-being and, especially, to its historical identity and memory. Centuries of use of its curative mud and waters brought with it great buildings for accommodation and treatment, though the city truly took off in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. However, unlike many international centres of relaxation and recreation, Acqui has always been a place more for treatment than for leisure. Though never built, the architectural designs of the 1920s were extraordinary in terms of their spatial and design solutions, and still today they point to an age of enormous ambition, accompanied by a grand vision for the city and its spa system. A vision in which the city believes as much today as ever before."--Publisher.

Book The World Ayahuasca Diaspora

Download or read book The World Ayahuasca Diaspora written by Beatriz Caiuby Labate and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ayahuasca is a psychoactive substance that has long been associated with indigenous Amazonian shamanic practices. The recent rise of the drink’s visibility in the media and popular culture, and its rapidly advancing inroads into international awareness, mean that the field of ayahuasca is quickly expanding. This expansion brings with it legal problems, economic inequalities, new forms of ritual and belief, cultural misunderstandings, and other controversies and reinventions. In The World Ayahuasca Diaspora, leading scholars, including established academics and new voices in anthropology, religious studies, and law fuse case-study ethnographies with evaluations of relevant legal and anthropological knowledge. They explore how the substance has impacted indigenous communities, new urban religiosities, ritual healing, international drug policy, religious persecution, and recreational drug milieus. This unique book presents classic and contemporary issues in social science and the humanities, providing rich material on the bourgeoning expansion of ayahuasca use around the globe.
