Book The History of the Tahitian Mission 1799 1830 Written by John Davies Missionary to the South Sea Islands

Download or read book The History of the Tahitian Mission 1799 1830 Written by John Davies Missionary to the South Sea Islands written by C.W. Newbury and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of the navigators who finally opened up the Pacific came missionaries, traders and finally administrators. In the early decades of the 19th century Polynesia was a rich field for the curious and the calculating, for writers and adventurers. The pioneer European settlers in Eastern Polynesia were ministers and mechanics sent out on the crest of an Evangelical wave the merged with the currents and eddies of trade and whaling to break down the isolation of the islands and their inhabitants. Among the pioneers was Welshman John Davies (1772-1855) who spent just over 50 years of his life on Tahiti and neighbouring islands. He witnessed the rise of the Pomare dynasty, conversion to Christianity, reaction to attempts at theocratic government, and the gradual encroachment of alien commerce and European rule. His colleagues have made their contribution to the history and anthropology of Polynesia. Davies himself, teacher, linguist and careful observer, wrote his own story of the Mission, its personalities and their contact with the Polynesians, from the early phase of disillusionment through three decades of political and economic change, destruction and reconstruction. From this contact there emerged the uneasy compromise of missionary and indigenous beliefs and institutions that characterized Tahiti and its neighbours before and after the advent of French administration. Davies's manuscript History is here edited and annotated, supplemented by the writings of other missionaries and presented as a contribution to the literature of the Pacific. This is a new print-on-demand hardback edition of the volume first published in 1961.

Book The World The Flesh and the Devil

Download or read book The World The Flesh and the Devil written by Andrew Sharp and published by Auckland University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-24 with total page 1277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Zealanders know Samuel Marsden as the founder of the CMS missions that brought Christianity (and perhaps sheep) to New Zealand. Australians know him as &‘the flogging parson' who established large landholdings and was dismissed from his position as magistrate for exceeding his jurisdiction. English readers know of Marsden for his key role in the history of missions and empire. In this major biography spanning research, and the subject's life, across England, New South Wales and New Zealand, Andrew Sharp tells the story of Marsden's life from the inside. Sharp focuses on revealing to modern readers the powerful evangelical lens through which Marsden understood the world. By diving deeply into key moments &– the voyage out, the disputes with Macquarie, the founding of missions &– Sharp gets us to reimagine the world as Marsden saw it: always under threat from the Prince of Darkness, in need of &‘a bold reprover of vice', a world written in the words of the King James Bible. Andrew Sharp takes us back into the nineteenth-century world, and an evangelical mind, to reveal the past as truly a foreign country.

Book The Enlightenment Philanthropy and the Idea of Social Progress in Early Australia

Download or read book The Enlightenment Philanthropy and the Idea of Social Progress in Early Australia written by Ilya Lazarev and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to highlight the influence of the Enlightenment idea of social progress on the character of the "civilising mission" in early Australia by tracing its presence in the various "civilising" attempts undertaken between 1788 and 1850. It also represents an attempt to marry the history of the British Enlightenment and the history of settler-Aboriginal interactions. The chronological structure of the book, as well as the breadth of its content, will facilitate the readers’ understanding of the evolution of "civilising attempts" and their epistemological underpinnings, while throwing additional light on the influence of the Enlightenment on Australian history as a whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amy Oxley Wilkinson was a well-known missionary in both China and the West in the early twentieth century. Initially setting up a mission station in a remote area of Fujian Province, she became aware of the way blind children were neglected, hidden, or abandoned in China at the time. After finding a blind boy left to die in a ditch, she established an innovative Blind Boys School in Fuzhou. Meanwhile her husband, Dr. George Wilkinson, set up the city's first hospital and introduced a program to address the pervasive curse of opium addiction. Amy's holistic and vocational approach to disability education brought her national and later international recognition. In 1920, the president of the new Chinese republic awarded her the Order of the Golden Grain, the highest honor a foreigner could receive. Two years later, Amy and the school's brass band toured England and performed before Queen Mary. Amy's story highlights the significance of contributions by women missionaries to the development of early modern China, and is a challenge to anyone committed to making their life count for others. Her Blind School remains a major institution in Fuzhou to this day.
