Book Theology and Spirituality in the Works of Samuel Davies

Download or read book Theology and Spirituality in the Works of Samuel Davies written by Joseph C. Harrod and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2019-06-17 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From his death in 1761 through the American Civil War, Samuel Davies was a recognized name among American Presbyterians, yet for more than a century he has remained far more obscure in discussions of American religion. During the mid-Eighteenth Century, New Side Presbyterian evangelist and preacher Samuel Davies was a pioneer for religious toleration in Colonial America, yet to date no single work has examined Davies' vision for the interior life. Theology and Spirituality in the Works of Samuel Davies is the first monograph-length analysis of Davies' conception of Christian spirituality. After a decade of pastoral ministry to congregations in Virginia, Davies followed eminent American theologian Jonathan Edwards as the fourth President of the College of New Jersey (Princeton University), a tenure cut short by his early death at age thirty-seven. J.C. Harrod examines various aspects of Davies' own personal piety as well as the place that Scripture, conversion, holiness, and the means of grace played in his formulation of Christian piety.

Book The Sermons of Samuel Davies

Download or read book The Sermons of Samuel Davies written by Samuel Davies and published by Soli Deo Gloria Publications. This book was released on 1995-11 with total page 1999 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Davies was called "the most eloquent preacher the American continent has ever produced" by Martyn Lloyd-Jones in his book Preaching and Preachers. Volume One consists largely of evangelistic sermons, for Davies was, first and foremost, a preacher of God's Word and an evangelist. For those who want to know how someone can be Reformed and evangelistic at the same time, this book is the answer to that question. Volume Two contains 31 sermons, some of which are entitled: "Jesus Christ the Only Foundation," "The Necessity and Excellency of Family Religion," and "The Doom of the Incorrigible Sinner." Volume Three contains 35 sermons, some of which are entitled: "Evidences of a Lack of Love for God," "The Curse of Cowardice," and "God the Sovereign of all Kingdoms."
