Download or read book Sampling Theory and Practice written by Changbao Wu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three parts of this book on survey methodology combine an introduction to basic sampling theory, engaging presentation of topics that reflect current research trends, and informed discussion of the problems commonly encountered in survey practice. These related aspects of survey methodology rarely appear together under a single connected roof, making this book a unique combination of materials for teaching, research and practice in survey sampling. Basic knowledge of probability theory and statistical inference is assumed, but no prior exposure to survey sampling is required. The first part focuses on the design-based approach to finite population sampling. It contains a rigorous coverage of basic sampling designs, related estimation theory, model-based prediction approach, and model-assisted estimation methods. The second part stems from original research conducted by the authors as well as important methodological advances in the field during the past three decades. Topics include calibration weighting methods, regression analysis and survey weighted estimating equation (EE) theory, longitudinal surveys and generalized estimating equations (GEE) analysis, variance estimation and resampling techniques, empirical likelihood methods for complex surveys, handling missing data and non-response, and Bayesian inference for survey data. The third part provides guidance and tools on practical aspects of large-scale surveys, such as training and quality control, frame construction, choices of survey designs, strategies for reducing non-response, and weight calculation. These procedures are illustrated through real-world surveys. Several specialized topics are also discussed in detail, including household surveys, telephone and web surveys, natural resource inventory surveys, adaptive and network surveys, dual-frame and multiple frame surveys, and analysis of non-probability survey samples. This book is a self-contained introduction to survey sampling that provides a strong theoretical base with coverage of current research trends and pragmatic guidance and tools for conducting surveys.

Download or read book Solutions Manual to Accompany Fundamentals of Environmental Sampling and Analysis written by Chunlong Zhang and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-07-04 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the Solutions Manual to accompany Fundamentals of Environmental Sampling and Analysis, Second Edition. It provides solutions to the exercises and problems found in the main volume This book introduces a comprehensive overview on the fundamentals and applications of environmental sampling and analysis for students in environmental science and engineering as well as environmental professionals involved in sampling and analytical work. The book details fundamentals of sampling, selection of standard methods, QA/QC, sample preparation, chemical and instrumental principles, and method applications to various contaminants in environmental matrices (air, water, soil, waste, and biological samples). The book gives an integrated introduction to sampling and analysis – both are essential to quality environmental data. For example, contrary to other books that introduce a specific area of sampling and analysis, this text provides a balanced mix of field sampling and laboratory analysis, essential knowledge in chemistry/statistics/hydrology/regulations, wet chemical methods for conventional chemicals as well as various modern instrumental techniques for contaminants of emerging concerns. The new edition adds three standalone chapters regarding the basics of analytical and organic chemistry, environmental data analysis, mass spectrometry and other significant amounts of new materials such as time-integrated passive sampling, incremental sampling, green sample preparation, Raman spectroscopy, chiral separation, and non-target analysis. In addition, the second edition provides more examples, visual aids, case studies, and end-of-chapter exercise problems to enhance a better understanding of the fundamentals of environmental sampling and analysis while incorporating current literature (mostly peer-reviewed journal papers) regarding the applications and challenges in the field of environmental sampling and analysis.

Download or read book Sampling Methods in Soybean Entomology written by M. Kogan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insects as a group occupy a middle ground in the biosphere between bacteria and viruses at one extreme, amphibians and mammals at the other. The size and gen eral nature of insects present special problems to the student of entomology. For example, many commercially available instruments are geared to measure in grams, while the forces commonly encountered in studying insects are in the mil ligram range. Therefore, techniques developed in the study of insects or in those fields concerned with the control of insect pests are often unique. Methods for measuring things are common to all sciences. Advances sometimes depend more on how something was done than on what was measured; indeed a given field often progresses from one technique to another as new methods are discovered, developed, and modified. Just as often, some of these techniques fmd their way into the classroom when the problems involved have been suffici ently ironed out to permit students to master the manipulations in a few labo ratory periods. Many specialized techniques are confined to one specific research laboratory. Although methods may be considered commonplace where they are used, in another context even the simplest procedures may save considerable time. It is the purpose of this series (1) to report new developments in methodology, (2) to reveal sources of groups who have dealt with and solved particular entomological problems, and (3) to describe experiments which might be applicable for use in biology laboratory courses.

This book was released on 2020-11-19 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural technology adoption is an important driver of rural poverty reduction. We study take-up of a specific technology: BARI-Mung 6 (BM6), an improved mung bean seed variety, among smallholder farmers in the southern region of Bangladesh. In contrast to agronomic studies on BM6 performance under highly controlled conditions, we focus on performance of this variety for farmers who are growing outside of the context of an agronomic field trial. We find no evidence of higher performance in this uncontrolled environment: we do not observe statistically significant differences in output or yields between farmers planting BM6 and those planting local varieties. We do, however, observe a significant positive association between BM6 use and yields among farmers who report applying seeds within recommended guidelines. Using a simple model, we illustrate that modest uncertainty around the required quantity of seed per unit area of land can substantively impact the profitability of BM6 seeds for smallholders in our study context. Our findings highlight the importance of providing adequate extension information along with improved technologies to encourage adoption and ultimately improve farmer welfare.
