Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does living in the sea stop these creatures from living the wild life? Of course not. Peter Penguin is bored with his life. He and his pals are discontented until one day some innocent play goes very wrong. Flooky is a flying fish who doesn't want to fly because he is a fish, not a bird. His brothers give up on him but his mother eventually makes the break through. Ms. Crab has a problem. Crabs walk sideways but she goes straight. She never ends up in the same place as her friends. A friendly shellfish gives her guidance. Sammy Seahorse is disappointed. He actually isn't a horse and can't do horsey things that is until Ollie Octopus sorts things out. Ollie is a young octopus who can't control many of his eight arms. He would prefer to have only two but then he wouldn't be an octopus would he? His problem is solved by an uncle who takes him in hand after a nasty clash with Cedric shark. Cedric is a sympathetic shark who is getting thin because he can't bear to eat his friends in the reef. An attack by two nasty sharks helps to solve the problem. Stella is a stagestruck starfish. She is determined to become a rockstar but her singing is so bad that all the other fish go on holiday when she rehearses. She forms a band that eventually finds a way to solve the problem. Eddie Electric Eel and Stanley Stingray are normally rivals but have become buddies as they are losing their power. Eddie's uncle tells the lads a way to get plugged in again. Sinclair the Sea dragon is upset as dragons are fearful creatures who fly and belch fire. He does not. How can you breathe fire under water when the water puts it out? A friendly dolphin helps him out. Pauline Puffer Fish is insufferable. She knows she is dangerous and loves the power her poison gives her. She is puffed up alright, with pride until one day she upsets a marlin. Not a good idea.

Book excerpt: With passion, heart and powerful storytelling, Khara Campbell gives us our next great Boston story of love, life and inspiration. Campbell's knack for seamlessly mixing pop culturism, modern romance and big picture life perspective is refreshing and heartwarming. --Dave Wedge, New York Times bestselling author of 12: The Inside Story of Tom Brady's Fight for Redemption, and Boston Strong: A City's Triumph Over Tragedy. Campbell's Seahorse is a poignant story of life, loss and everlasting love, a rare and beautiful perspective on the fight to pass our legacy onto the next generation. The characters bring me home and remind me that I am the best parts of my mother, my father, and that we, too, have something to pass on. A story that should be read by every mother, daughter, and feminist fighting for the next generation to be better. --Elizabeth Bohnel, senior producer and founding member of MAKERS: Women Who Make America Caroline and Chris Shaughnessy don't fit the small town New England mold. They weren't married and pregnant by thirty. They don't strive to get into the most exclusive golf clubs, money doesn't run in the family, and they've carved their own paths. Caroline is a self-made boss in a traditionally male role, while Chris teaches at an all-women's college. Basically, they're the couple that has everything--great looks, careers, health, and home. They have everything--except a child, and no one in Cohasset, Massachusetts, lets them forget. The pressure of so many unsuccessful pregnancy attempts and her family's stinging doubt are driving Caroline to the breaking point until one June afternoon when she gets the news that she's expecting. Everything Caroline and Chris have ever wanted is coming true. Thrilled to be a mother, Caroline goes out for her routine morning jog and collapses. She is rushed to the hospital, where they learn she has a cancerous mass in her lung. This must be a mistake. Caroline is an exemplar of good health. Now, Caroline and Chris must make an impossible choice as they fight for love and run the marathon of life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This valuable reference guide provides suggestions of picture books set in more than 70 countries in each continent of the world, along with standards-based activities. Reading the World with Picture Books presents an exhaustive collection of booktalk options with picture books that are set in the major countries of each continent. Hundreds of children's books with an international flavor are organized by continent and then by country, and suggested activities accompany the titles, encouraging students to interpret information related to historical or geographic concepts and use problem-solving skills. Activities range from those appropriate for beginners to experienced researchers/writers. All call for high-level thinking and most provide opportunities to respond in creative ways. In addition, all of the activities are keyed to selected national standards in language arts and social studies. The picture books suggested are not only excellent choices to capture a booktalk audience's attention and educate young readers about world culture, but also to demonstrate how human beings have adapted to the various environments of the world.
