Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adventure with Flying Squirrels" The flying squirrels work together to get their friends out of a treetop village that was damaged by a storm. Summary: They lived in a forest full of flowers and tall trees. The squirrels were very smart and could fly like birds. People also knew these squirrels for being brave and caring. The treetop town, where all the squirrels lived together happily, was hit by a big storm one day. The storm wiped out the town, and some of their friends got lost and needed help in a faraway forest area. The flying squirrels moved quickly to save their friends and get back home safely. They flew a lot before they left because they knew the trip would be hard. To get ready, they also got nuts, berries, and other foods to eat along the way and made their little capes work better so they could move. A lot of things went wrong for the squirrels as they set out on their trip. First, they had to fly across a very wide river. They found some stones to jump on and made sure everyone made it across without getting hurt. Then they had to walk through a part of the forest that was fully covered in thick fog. They stayed together and talked to each other to find their way, so no one got lost. They saw the biggest mountain they had ever seen on their way. They didn't give up, though. As they went up, they pushed each other. When they got to the top, some friendly eagles met them and offered to help them fly farther and higher than they could on their own. The trip brought them closer together and taught them how important it is to be brave, kind, and friends. They finally got to the house of their stuck friend. They fixed the mess and hid their friends. Following their safe return, they shared tales about their trip. It was quiet again in the forest, and the flying squirrels' town in the trees stood tall as proof of how brave and helpful they were. Chapter 1: The Storm A family of flying squirrels lived together in the middle of a huge, bright forest with trees that touched the sky and flowers of every color you can think of. But these squirrels were different from other squirrels. They could glide from tree to tree, which was really cool, and they liked living on the tallest branches where they could see the most. The scenery around their town was beautiful. Their homes were made of sticks and leaves, and they could fly gracefully between the trees to visit each other. Strange things happened one night, though. The wind began to whisper, and then it got louder and stronger, as if it were telling the people who lived in the forest what was going to happen. The night went from being quiet to being filled with lightning, thunder, and howling winds all at once. There was no steady wind in this storm; it was a fierce gale determined to destroy everything in its path. It rained so hard this time that it felt like buckets of water were falling from the sky. Usually, the rain would feed the trees. The trees that the flying squirrels' homes were in began to shake very badly. It looked like a green tornado as the leaves that had made their town look so pretty flew through the air. Along with the rain getting worse, the squirrels prayed a lot inside their homes. It was already morning, and the storm had already done a lot of damage. The pretty town in the trees, which showed how creative the squirrels were and how well they got along with nature, was now just a mess of broken glass. It had taken months to build these houses, and now they were either partially or fully destroyed. The branches that the young squirrels had used as paths and play areas were all over the forest floor. It broke the flying squirrels' hearts to see their town destroyed. One night, everything they had worked for generations was lost. They had lived in the trees for generations. But there was still hope, even though everything was broken. The squirrel community still had a lot of energy. They knew the forest was their home and that they would rebuild it together, making it stronger than before. The storm had made them stronger, but it had also brought them closer together. They were determined to get through this and many other problems. Chapter 2: Decide What to Do. After a big storm destroyed their town in the trees, the flying squirrels were in terrible trouble. Sammy, a brave and smart squirrel, stepped up in the middle of all the damage and chaos and called a meeting. It wasn't just any meeting; it was for a job that was both important and dangerous. "We need to get our friends out of that other part of the forest," Sammy said in a brave and upbeat voice, even though things were bad. Those words didn't just say something; they showed how brave and strong the flying squirrel group was. There was silence in the forest, like it heard what Sammy said. The squirrels got together, and you could see worry and aim in their eyes. Samuel could be seen and heard by all the other squirrels because he was on a stump high up. They were not sure if the road they were used to would be open again after the storm. Also, Sammy's plan was not well received because the other part of the forest was far away, and it wasn't clear how to get there. When Sammy looked at the other squirrels, he saw pride instead of fear. Even though they knew there were risks, it made them sad to think that their friends might get lost and hurt while they waited for help. It looked like the squirrels were taking it seriously when they agreed and nodded. They cared about each other and worked together at this point, which was a turning point. They were aware that the trip would be hard, dangerous, and test both their physical and mental toughness, but they didn't think twice about going on this rescue mission because they wanted to make sure their friends were safe. They were ready to handle any problems that came up so they could get their friends back to their community. Once the choice was made, there was no turning back. They made their choice because they loved each other, were friends, and had a bond that could not be broken. They cared about each other like family and would do anything to keep everyone safe. In the chaos, Sammy and the flying squirrels' bravery stood out like a bright light of hope. But at that time, they were all on the same side, ready to face the unknowns of the journey ahead.

Book excerpt: "Laskin's narrative captures it all--the fervor, the drugs, the sex, the politics, the magic, the tragedy of the 60s and 70s and most of all the angst of that wonderful, terrible time. A fun, transporting, and evocative read." --Daniel James Brown, New York Times bestselling author of The Boys in the Boat A turbulent coming-of-age novel about a young man who loses his innocence and finds his soul in the ferment of New York City in 1970 On the brink of a new decade, as the radical 1960s turns to the 1970s, seventeen-year-old Sam Stein is about to grow up in a hurry. Raised in a cushy Long Island suburb where his parents consign him to the care of Tutu Carter, their live-in housekeeper, Sam is learning uncomfortable truths about his place and privilege in his relationship with Tutu and in the world. When he stumbles into a New Year's party and meets firebrand Kim Goodman, his life is changed forever. In short order, he falls in love and flees with her to the drug-soaked East Village of Manhattan, and gets swept up in the revolutionary political movements of the time. An aspiring writer, Sam bears witness to the seismic upheavals of the day while remaining utterly blind to a high-stakes plot that Kim and her comrades are executing right under his nose. As seemingly unrelated events click into place, what Sammy knew and what Sammy didn't know become matters of life and death - not only for himself and Kim, but for Tutu and her grandson Leon in Harlem, and for the radical protest movement teetering between disillusion and revolution. Compulsively readable, peopled by unforgettable characters, crackling with wit and suspense, What Sammy Knew brilliantly evokes a chaotic, dangerously polarized, and historically important moment in America.
