Book Same War Different Missions

Download or read book Same War Different Missions written by John H. Foertschbeck (Sr.) and published by John Foertschbeck. This book was released on 2009 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book recounts the personal WW II experiences of four participants in their very own words. The three American and one German shared many similar and, at the same time, very different experiences. The fighting units of the 82nd Airborne (Sobus) and 23rd Infantry (Robinson) contrast with the support provided by the Special Services Company (Foertschbeck). All four men entered the service, American and German, with a sense of loyalty and duty. All served honorably. As the war in Europe was coming to a close three had thoughts of coming home and then going to Japan to "finish the job". The fourth, Hertrich, was captured by the Russians in Hungary and was a prisoner in a labor camp until November 1949.

Download or read book Unconventional Warrior written by Walter Morris Herd and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-07-03 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating look at the life of a modern-day professional soldier gives the reader an inside view of the deadly global war on terror. Herd argues that conflicting political objectives have muddied the way forward for the on-the-ground commanders and thus threaten the prospect of any real victory in Afghanistan. He uses everyday stories to make his points: "One of the local leaders pointed to his wrist and said to my interpreter, 'the Americans have all the watches but we have all the time.' That made a lasting impression on me." Colonel Herd was one of the highest ranking officers on the ground with a command of some 4,000 elite soldiers from all branches of the U.S. military and five other coalition nations. It was a mission he had trained for all of his life. A sixth-generation soldier, Herd became a master parachutist, a combat scuba diver, a Green Beret and an Army Ranger. He conducted combat missions against the Taliban by using the Special Forces mandate to work by, with and through the local population.

Book Church and Mission in the Context of War

Download or read book Church and Mission in the Context of War written by Eraston Kambale Kighoma and published by Langham Monographs. This book was released on 2021-06-16 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The church in the Democratic Republic of Congo is no stranger to conflict, yet little research has been done on the impact of war in shaping the local church’s understanding of itself and its mission. In this in-depth study, Dr. Eraston Kambale Kighoma traces the survival and theological development of the Baptist Church in Central Africa over a twenty-year period of conflict. Utilizing a combination of descriptive, contextual and integrative approaches, he examines the effect of war on the church’s theology in action, especially its understanding and practice of mission. This study sheds new light on existing theories of missions, while offering specific insight into the church’s missionary task in contexts of conflict. It offers an excellent addition to missiological studies for scholars and practitioners alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defined as operations other than war, stability operations can include peacekeeping activities, population control, and counternarcotics efforts, and for the entire history of the United States military, they have been considered a dangerous distraction if not an outright drain on combat resources. Yet in 2005, the U.S. Department of Defense reversed its stance on these practices, a dramatic shift in the mission of the armed forces and their role in foreign and domestic affairs. With the elevation of stability operations, the job of the American armed forces is no longer just to win battles but to create a controlled, nonviolent space for political negotiations and accord. Yet rather than produce revolutionary outcomes, stability operations have resulted in a large-scale mission creep with harmful practical and strategic consequences. Jennifer Morrison Taw examines the military's sudden embrace of stability operations and its implications for American foreign policy and war. Through a detailed examination of deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, changes in U.S. military doctrine, adaptations in force preparation, and the political dynamics behind this new stance, Taw connects the preference for stability operations to the far-reaching, overly ambitious American preoccupation with managing international stability. She also shows how domestic politics have reduced civilian agencies' capabilities while fostering an unhealthy overreliance on the military. Introducing new concepts such as securitized instability and institutional privileging, Taw builds a framework for understanding and analyzing the expansion of the American armed forces' responsibilities in an ever-changing security landscape.
