Now the second in command of his father's syndicate wants Mort's help with an even bigger job: killing Theo Rucker. Initially roped in simply as Mort's handler, Chuck's people skills become invaluable in rooting out loyalists to the old regime when even Don's trusted lieutenants are too close to be objective. Mort trims the ranks quietly, become a boogeyman to any syndicate guys not in on the plot. When the coup takes place, they hope for a quick decisive action that swiftly puts Don on the throne. Of course, none of it goes according to plan, not even the part where Don's only daughter, Tania, is holed up with bodyguards in an undisclosed safehouse. Lucky for her, a young up-and-comer in the organization was also part of her protection detail: Brad Ramsey. When a mole blows their cover, the pair head on the run together, hoping to evade Rucker minions on all sides of the family until they're sure she's safe. Same as the Old Boss is the fourteenth mission of Black Ocean: Mirth & Mayhem. It follows a mismatched duo of itinerant comedian and outlaw wizard as they roam the galaxy trying to eke out a living and stay ahead of the consequences of their actions. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . Book Sit Down and Shut Up

Download or read book Sit Down and Shut Up written by Brad Warner and published by New World Library. This book was released on 2007 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2003, Brad Warner blew the top off the Buddhist book world with his irreverent autobiography/manifesto, Hardcore Zen: Punk Rock, Monster Movies, and the Truth about Reality. Now in his second book, Sit Down and Shut Up, Brad tackles one of the great works of Zen literature, the Shobogenzo, by thirteenth-century Zen master Dogen. Illuminating Dogen’s enigmatic teachings in plain language, Brad intertwines musings on sex, meditation, death, God, sin, and happiness with an exploration of the punk rock ethos. In chapters such as “Evil Is Stupid,” “Kill Your Anger,” and “Enlightenment Is for Sissies,” Brad melds the antiauthoritarianism of punk with that of Zen, mixing in a travelogue of his triumphant return to Ohio to play in a reunion concert of Akron punk bands. For those drawn to Buddhist teachings but scared off by their stiff austerity, Brad writes with a sharp smack of truth, in teachings and stories that cut to the heart of reality.

Book excerpt: This handbook gathers contributors from different disciplines of the social sciences, such as organization and management studies, sociology, anthropology and political science, to constructively discuss the kinds of transformations we need to see in coming years. These transformations concern the way we work, produce and consume but also the way in which we think about work, production and consumption. In an explicit rejection of the demand that the social sciences provide quick fixes, the contributors of this handbook discuss possible solutions in a critical and comprehensive manner and with an eye to both their environmental and societal implications. The handbook is divided into four parts: Opening up futures, Techno-economic transformations at work, Sustainable environmental transformation, and Radical democratic futures. Book Digital Rights Management

Download or read book Digital Rights Management written by Catherine A. Lemmer and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world of users that routinely click “I Agree” buttons, librarians may be the lone voice raising an alert to the privacy, use, and ownership issues arising in connection with the design and implementation of digital rights management (DRM) technologies. DRM reflects the efforts of copyright owners to prevent the illegal distribution of copyrighted material – an admirable goal on its face. A common misunderstanding is that DRM is copyright law. It is not. Rather it is a method of preventing copyright infringement; however, if unchecked, DRM has the potential to violate privacy, limit ownership rights, and undermine the delicate balance of rights and policies established by our current system of copyright. All three of these arenas are critical for both librarians and their users. Reflecting the shift from ownership to access, libraries are increasingly providing access to rights-protected digital content. Libraries strive to provide access to rights-protected content in a manner that protects both the content creator and the privacy of the user. DRM encompasses a variety of technologies and strategies utilized by content owners and managers to limit access to and the use of rights-protected content. Librarians need to understand DRM to effectively enable users to access and use rights-protected digital content while at the same time protecting the privacy of the user. Designed to address the practical operational and planning issues related to DRM, this guide explores the critical issues and challenges faced by librarians. After reading it, librarians will better understand: the digital content rights protection scheme; the various DRM technologies and how they are used; how to use authentication and authorization standards, strategies, and technologies; and, the privacy and security issues related to DRM. Edited by two librarians who also hold law degrees, this is a best practices guide for front-line librarians on how to best respond to the impact of DRM schemes on collection development, staffing, budget, service, and other library concerns.

Book Crash to Paywall

Download or read book Crash to Paywall written by Brian Gorman and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2014, when Postmedia acquired Quebecor's Sun Media newspaper and online assets, there was a sense that the recent history of newspapers was repeating itself not as comedy or tragedy, but as eulogy. Crash to Paywall shows that while the newspaper business was weakened by decreases in advertising revenues and circulation, much of its problems stem from self-inflicted damage and business practices dating back to the 1970s. Brian Gorman explores the Canadian newspaper industry crisis and the relationship between the news media and the public. He challenges both the popular mantra that a "perfect storm" of unforeseen circumstances blindsided a declining industry and the narrative that readers were abandoning newspapers, causing advertisers to turn away from "dying" media. Gorman argues that observers had been warning for decades that the business was creating its own problems by acquiring ever-larger debt and shareholder obligations while steadily cutting back on journalists' resources. Finally, by providing journalism for free online, newspaper companies devalued their most important resource and impaired their profitable print products. With dozens of interviews conducted with leading Canadian journalists and editors, Crash to Paywall brings to light the many misconceptions, generalizations, omissions, and highly suspect conclusions about the present state of newspapers and their future.

Book American Coup

    Book Details:
  • Author : William M. Arkin
  • Publisher : Little, Brown
  • Release : 2013-09-10
  • ISBN : 0316251259
  • Pages : 321 pages

Download or read book American Coup written by William M. Arkin and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2013-09-10 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stunning exploration of the subtle erosion of freedom in an age of concocted fear and de facto military authority. When we think of a military coup, the first image that comes to mind is a general, standing at a podium with a flag behind him, declaring the deposing of elected leaders and the institution of martial law. Think again. In American Coup, William Arkin reveals the desk-bound takeover of the highest reaches of government by a coterie of "grey men" of the national security establishment. Operating between the lines of the Constitution, this powerful and unelected group fights to save the nation from "terror" and weapons of mass destruction while at the same time modifying and undermining the very essence of the country. Many books are written about secrecy, surveillance, and government law-breaking; none so powerfully expose the truth of everyday life in this state of war.

Book Propaganda 2 1

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter K. Fallon
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2022-09-08
  • ISBN : 1666723754
  • Pages : 195 pages

Download or read book Propaganda 2 1 written by Peter K. Fallon and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-09-08 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the US presidential election of 2016 the words propaganda and fake news have been prominent in American political and cultural discourse. Yet very few people can provide a coherent explanation of what they mean, precisely, when using them. On the two sides of the political spectrum ("red" and "blue"), each points out messages from the other side that they think are untrue--or that they simply don't like. Unlike our dangerously biased political system, however, reality has more than only two sides. For decades, Americans sat by while their mediated world was carved into a single "red reality" focused in necessary opposition to a single "blue reality." We've been given "red media outlets" and "blue media outlets" to stoke our collective rage, each against the other's lies. But the first two decades of the twenty-first century have presented us with a new information environment, one of unregulated and seemingly uncontrollable information. Like the young boy in a popular folktale, we can now see--if only we can resist the pressures of social conformity--that both emperors, red and blue, strut proudly before us, naked. Propaganda 2.1 is a handbook for seeing reality clearly--and coping with it.

Book Notes from Beyond the Fringe

Download or read book Notes from Beyond the Fringe written by Julie Miller and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-04-07 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one ever accused Greg Stott of not having a sense of humor. His retelling of experiences often left his readers begging for more and now there is an entire book dedicated to the events that comprise life (as he knows it). Notes from Beyond the Fringe is a unique and entertaining collection of stories based on one mans view of the world around him. With a distinct and engaging voice, Stott relates his life through vignettes that, while seemingly ordinary in nature, either wind up impacting him or are subsequently addressed by him in a manner that is anything but ordinary. His subjects encompass a wide variety of topics familiar to just about everybody but are liberally skewed in the retelling by influences that began with growing up in a pre-tofu California in the 1950's, were adjusted as a result of teen life endured in a boarding school, befogged by a misspent youth and eventually warped from the effects of being a single parent. Very little escapes Stott's attention and subsequent 'adjustments' to his concept of reality. Whether describing how to deliver 400+ newspapers at speed in a 1965 Volkswagen, explaining difficult situations to his pre-pubescent tax deduction, the acquisition of proper Texas BBQ etiquette or relating his seemingly endless failures in dealing with animals, offspring, relationships, hot rods and amateur carpentry, the stories are both original and told with a perspective that can only come about as the result severe mental instability. Be prepared to spend hours attempting to understand how anyone could have survived so long in an uncontrolled environment and enjoying the humor that is, more often than not, related at the author's expense in Notes from Beyond the Fringe. Your perspective on the world will never be the same.

Book Landmark Essays on Writing Program Administration

Download or read book Landmark Essays on Writing Program Administration written by Kelly Ritter and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading with the provocative observation that writing programs administration lacks “an established set of texts that provides a baseline of shared knowledge... in which to root our ongoing conversations and with which to welcome newcomers,” Landmark Essays on Writing Program Administration focuses on WPA identity to propose one such grouping of texts. This Landmark volume is the cornerstone resource for new Writing Program Administrators and graduate students seeking an ever-important overview of the literature on Writing Program Administration. Drawing broadly across scholarship in writing programs and writing centers, Ritter and Ianetta work to historicize, theorize, and problematize the ever-shifting answers offered to the question: Who—or what—is a WPA?

Book Residual Uncertainty

Download or read book Residual Uncertainty written by Roy Pateman and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2003 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intelligence networks will forever be with us, and surely there will always be an appropriate role for the intelligence community. There are still important but hard to learn facts about targets--including the intentions and capabilities of rogue states and terrorists, the proliferation of unconventional weapons, and the disposition of potentially hostile military forces--that can only be identified, monitored, and measured through dedicated intelligence assets. In Residual Uncertainty, Roy Pateman gives numerous examples of where security has been breached, and networks, severely, even irreparably compromised and explains how the consequences of intelligence failure will surely be graver in the future. Pateman pinpoints the causes of failures in intelligence and policy in today's world and offers solutions that will drastically overhaul and improve our intelligence networks.

Book Rules for Patriots

Download or read book Rules for Patriots written by Steve Deace and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steve Deace represents a new generation of conservatives more concerned with preserving liberty than blind partisanship that only props up a corrupt ruling class. To Deace and the millions of grassroots patriots he represents, it's not just Right vs. Left, but Right vs. Wrong. It's not just Republican vs. Democrat, but Us vs. Them. Many great books have been written about what we should believe and why, but for the first time, in Rules for Patriots, the author shows how to do what we believe.
