Book excerpt: Known for making up his own rules of right and wrong, Texas Ranger Sam "Wildcard" MacGregor takes what he wants when he wants it, especially when it comes to women. But seduction is the last thing on his mind when he stumbles across a beauty crouching in fear beside a burned-out wagon. Isabella may look feminine and unassuming, but she's hell in a bodice with gunslinging skills to match any man's. The woman the townsfolk call "cursed" is hiding secrets too dangerous to face alone. Luckily, she sees in Sam what he can barely glimpse in himself—a virtuous man in a hard country bent on breaking him. A man who, under it all, craves a passionate woman willing to risk everything….

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A true story of innovation that “reads like a movie” (Seth Godin), centered on a scrappy team of engineers—far from the Silicon Valley limelight—and their quest to revolutionize the traditional trade of masonry by building a robot that can lay bricks. Humans have landed men on the moon, programmed cars to drive themselves, and put the knowledge of our entire civilization in your back pocket. But no one—from MIT nerds to Army Corps engineers—has ever built a robot that can lay bricks as well as a mason. Unlike the controlled conditions of a factory line, where robots are now ubiquitous, no two construction sites are alike, and a day’s work involves countless variables—bricks that range in size and quality, temperamental mortar mixes, uneven terrain, fickle weather, and moody foremen. Twenty-five years ago, on a challenging construction job in Syracuse, architect Nate Podkaminer had a vision of a future full of efficient, automated machines that freed bricklayers from the repetitive, toilsome burden of lifting, in bricks, the equivalent of a Ford truck every few days. Offhandedly, he mentioned the idea to his daughter’s boyfriend, and after some inspired scheming, the architect and engineer—soon to be in-laws—cofounded a humble start-up called Construction Robotics. Working out of a small trailer, they recruited a boldly unconventional team of engineers to build the Semi-Automated Mason: SAM. In classic American tradition, a small, unlikely, and eccentric family-run start-up sought to reimagine the behemoth $1 trillion construction industry—the second biggest industry in America—in bootstrap fashion. In the tradition of Tracy Kidder’s The Soul of a New Machine, SAM unfolds as an engineering drama, full of trials and setbacks, heated showdowns between meticulous scientists and brash bricklayers (and their even more opinionated union), and hard-earned milestone achievements. Jonathan Waldman, acclaimed author of Rust, masterfully “reveals a world that surrounds us but mostly eludes our notice” (The Boston Globe).

She has the ability to calm any wolf and because of this gift, her new pack is thriving. She also causes every wolf to become extremely protective over her, because of this, it's doubtful that she will be blessed with a mate. A mate is supposed to be protective and it would be difficult for the Moon Goddess to find a wolf strong enough to withstand the pull of an omega mate.Samantha is glad that she won't have to worry about a mate. She doesn't want to trust anyone outside of her pack and strong males are extremely untrustworthy in her experience.Everything is going well until her old pack begs her new one for help. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is somewhat unique. I am not the author although it was written through me . He is the author not me. Why I ended up being the one to be used by Him remains a complete baffling mystery. I am simply His humble steward in this process. Everyone living in America recognizes Home Depot. They are a staple. It is a poem containing 2,500 quatrains that contain life as a part time cashier in a small Home Depot store. It is not always easy reading but it has appeal and value for anyone willing to read it. What are the takeaways? For me the greatest takeaway is humility. The people portrayed in thsi writing are far superior to me. I am not worthy to be the proverbial gum on their shoe. Their trust and friendship provided me is more valuable than gold from Ophir. They live very difficult lives in an extraordinary manner. They never had a level playing filed. they must climb Mt Everest each day. There is humor, pathos and at times Upton Sinclair type muckraking all mixed into the writing. The work shows the good and the bad of life, work and in some ways America today.

Book excerpt: An irreverent and charming collection of deeply personal essays about the joys of low pop culture and bad taste, exploring coming of age in the 2000s in the age of Hot Topic, Creed, and frosted lip gloss—from the James Beard Award-nominated writer of the Catapult column "Store-Bought Is Fine” Tacky is about the power of pop culture—like any art—to imprint itself on our lives and shape our experiences, no matter one's commitment to "good" taste. These fourteen essays are a nostalgia-soaked antidote to the millennial generation's obsession with irony, putting the aesthetics we hate to love—snakeskin pants, Sex and the City, Cheesecake Factory's gargantuan menu—into kinder and sharper perspective. Each essay revolves around a different maligned (and yet, Rax would argue, vital) cultural artifact, providing thoughtful, even romantic meditations on desire, love, and the power of nostalgia. An essay about the gym-tan-laundry exuberance of Jersey Shore morphs into an excavation of grief over the death of her father; in "You Wanna Be On Top," Rax writes about friendship and early aughts girlhood; in another, Guy Fieri helps her heal from an abusive relationship. The result is a collection that captures the personal and generational experience of finding joy in caring just a little too much with clarity, heartfelt honesty, and Rax King's trademark humor. Book Females in the Frame

Download or read book Females in the Frame written by Penelope Jackson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-16 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is available in audiobook format, narrated by Kerry Fox: https://www.audible.co.uk/pd/Females-in-the-Frame-Audiobook/B08PC6YSW1?asin=B08PC6YSW1&source_code=ASUOR22212112000M8 This book explores the untold history of women, art, and crime. It has long been widely accepted that women have not played an active role in the art crime world, or if they have, it has been the part of the victim or peacemaker. Women, Art, and Crime overturns this understanding, as it investigates the female criminals who have destroyed, vandalised, stolen, and forged art, as well as those who have conned clients and committed white-collar crimes in their professional occupations in museums, libraries, and galleries. Whether prompted by a desire for revenge, for money, the instinct to protect a loved one, or simply as an act of quality control, this book delves into the various motivations and circumstances of women art criminals from a wide range of countries, including the UK, the USA, New Zealand, Romania, Germany, and France. Through a consideration of how we have come to perceive art crime and the gendered language associated with its documentation, this pioneering study questions why women have been left out of the discourse to date and how, by looking specifically at women, we can gain a more complete picture of art crime history.

Book Pshaw It s Me Grandson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fly-on-the-wall account of making a television show, and a great examination of country living in the first half of the twentieth century, “PSHAW, IT’S ME GRANDSON” revolves around the relationship between a boy and his grandfather. When Clay is cast as a regular in the TV series Christy, his grandfather Clifton serves as his on-set guardian. The series is set in a poor farm community, which is eerily similar to the one where Clifton grew up. Being on the set of the show provides a dramatic transformation for both, as Clay comes of age and Clifton comes to terms with his past.

Book Monstrous Possibilities

Download or read book Monstrous Possibilities written by Amanda Howell and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-04 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on how the abject spectacle of the ‘monstrous feminine’ has been reimagined by recent and contemporary screen horrors focused on the desires and subjectivities of female monsters who, as anti-heroic protagonists of revisionist and reflexive texts, exemplify gendered possibility in altered cultures of 21st century screen production and reception. As Barbara Creed notes in a recent interview, the patriarchal stereotype of horror that she named ‘the monstrous-feminine’ has, decades later, ‘embarked on a life of her own’. Focused on this altered and renewed form of female monstrosity, this study engages with an international array of recent and contemporary screen entertainments, from arthouse and indie horror films by emergent female auteurs, to the franchised products of multimedia conglomerates, to 'quality' television horror, to the social media-based creations of horror fans working as ‘pro-sumers’. In this way, the monograph in its organisation and scope maps the converged and rapidly changing environment of 21st century screen cultures in order to situate the monstrous female anti-hero as one of its distinctive products.
