Mid-career and younger officers (including the African-American and female officers, as well as younger Euro-American male officers) tend to use a management-cop style. Previous surveys of urban dialects have found that working-class men tend to use stable vernacular phonological variables more frequently than working-class women, while women use innovative vernacular variants more than men. The well-known pattern does not appear in the case of women working as police officers: women do not lead in the use of innovative variants. Vernacular language is used differently by Euro-American and African-American officers.
