Download or read book We All Wear the Blue written by Bonnie Sue McElhinny and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 794 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Senior Euro-American male officers more frequently use a street-cop style. Mid-career and younger officers (including the African-American and female officers, as well as younger Euro-American male officers) tend to use a management-cop style. Previous surveys of urban dialects have found that working-class men tend to use stable vernacular phonological variables more frequently than working-class women, while women use innovative vernacular variants more than men. The well-known pattern does not appear in the case of women working as police officers: women do not lead in the use of innovative variants. Vernacular language is used differently by Euro-American and African-American officers.

Book Urban Matters

Download or read book Urban Matters written by Arne Ziegler and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2021-12-16 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The city as a complex socio-cultural structure plays a central role, economically, administratively as well as culturally. Factors such as higher population density, a more expansive infrastructure, and larger social and cultural diversity compared to rural areas have a substantial impact on urban society and urban communication. Focusing on the latter, the contributions to this volume discuss the characteristics and dynamics of urban language use, considering aspects such as contact, variation and change, as well as identity, indexicality, and attitudes, but also spatial factors including mobility, urbanisation/counterurbanisation, and diffusion processes. The collected articles provide an update of ‘first wave’ approaches of variationist sociolinguistics, but also establish a connection to ‘third wave’ research for readers from a broad range of fields, especially sociolinguistics, variationist linguistics, and dialectology. The book presents modern methodological and conceptual ideas and a wealth of new findings but also serves as a reference work, combining theoretical discussions with results from recent empirical studies.

Book Language and a Sense of Place

Download or read book Language and a Sense of Place written by Chris Montgomery and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-25 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Place has always been central to studies of language, variation and change. Since the eighteenth century, dialectologists have been mapping language features according to boundaries - both physical and institutional. In the twentieth century, variationist sociolinguists developed techniques to correlate language use with speakers' orientations to place. More recently, perceptual dialectologists are examining the cognitive and ideological processes involved in language-place correlations and working on ways to understand how speakers mentally process space. Bringing together research from across the field of language variation, this volume explores the extent of twenty-first century approaches to place. It features work from both established and influential scholars, and up and coming researchers, and brings language variation research up to date. The volume focuses on four key areas of research: processes of language variation and change across time and space; methods and datasets for regional analysis; perceptions of the local in language research; and ideological representations of place.
