Book excerpt: Revised & Updated Edition! God is love. Crazy, relentless, all-powerful love. Have you ever wondered if we're missing it? It's crazy, if you think about it. The God of the universe—the Creator of nitrogen and pine needles, galaxies and E-minor—loves us with a radical, unconditional, self-sacrificing love. And what is our typical response? We go to church, sing songs, and try not to cuss. Whether you've verbalized it yet or not, we all know something's wrong. Does something deep inside your heart long to break free from the status quo? Are you hungry for an authentic faith that addresses the problems of our world with tangible, even radical, solutions? God is calling you to a passionate love relationship with Himself. Because the answer to religious complacency isn't working harder at a list of do's and don'ts—it's falling in love with God. And once you encounter His love, as Francis describes it, you will never be the same. Because when you're wildly in love with someone, it changes everything. Download or read book Broadcasting the Faith written by Michael E. Pohlman and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Broadcasting the Faith tells the riveting story of the American church's embrace of radio in the early decades of the twentieth century. By investigating major radio personalities like Walter Maier, Aimee Semple McPherson, Harry Emerson Fosdick, and Charles Fuller, this study considers the implications for theology in America when Christianity moved to the airwaves. In the heyday of radio, religious-radio preachers sought to use their programs to counter the secularization of American culture. Ultimately, however, their programs contributed to secularization by accelerating changes already evident in both the conservative and liberal streams of American Christianity. To reach a vast American audience, radio preachers transformed their sectarian messages into a religion more suitable to the masses, thereby altering the very religion it aimed to preserve. To make religion accessible to large and diverse audiences, radio preachers accommodated their messages in ways suited to the medium of radio. Although religious-radio preachers set forth to advance the influence of religion in American society, their choice to limit theological substance ironically promoted the secularization of the American church.

Download or read book Do You Believe Jesus written by John A. Popken and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many beliefs practiced in mainstream Christianitysome much older than New Testament writingsfind their roots in a blend of ancient pagan worship, philosophy, and allegorical interpretation. The early church in Rome, familiar with these ancient beliefs and practices, attempted to Christianize them and then force fed them to the churches of the Roman Empire. And just like church groups back then adopted those beliefs and practices, Christians today continue to adopt questionable beliefs from the society around them. Do You Believe Jesus? presents a theology that dares to confront mainstream beliefs, most of which are cloaked in tradition. It finds its basis in the words of Jesusthose he personally taughtand in the writings of the early church fathers. It is an alternate theology and may have some serendipitous similarities to other theologies that are also out of the mainstream, and it will challenge mainstream beliefs that in no way represent the gospel as taught by Jesus. If you have questioned whether or not your church and its beliefs are taught by Jesus, then it is time to explore what Jesus actually taught. Or if you do not attend church and do not know what to believe, then listening to Jesuss words can start you on a new path, settling questions in your mind and providing peace of mind by exposing new truths.
Download or read book Willing to Believe written by R. C. Sproul and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2002-04-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the role of the will in believing the good news of the gospel? Why is there so much controversy over free will throughout church history? R. C. Sproul finds that Christians have often been influenced by pagan views of the human will that deny the effects of Adam's fall. In Willing to Believe, Sproul traces the free-will controversy from its formal beginning in the fifth century, with the writings of Augustine and Pelagius, to the present. Readers will gain understanding into the nuances separating the views of Protestants and Catholics, Calvinists and Arminians, and Reformed and Dispensationalists. This book, like Sproul's Faith Alone, is a major work on an essential evangelical tenet.
Download or read book Songs to Make the Dust Dance written by Yung-Hee Kim and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-06-21 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breaking through the long-established image of Heian Japan (794–1185) as a culture dominated by ritualized aristocratic values, Yung-Hee Kim presents a picture of a country in transition, filled with a wide variety of common people responding to very ordinary situations. The court does not disappear, but rather becomes part of a larger society inhabited by Buddhist nuns and mountain ascetics, farmers and fishermen, beggars and gamblers. In popular songs called imayo, they express their concerns about religion, love, aging, and even current affairs. In 1179 Emperor Go-Shirakawa compiled a collection of this song genre, which had flourished for two centuries. His twenty-volume anthology, Ryojin hisho, circulated until the middle of the fourteenth century, when it disappeared completely. To the astonishment of the scholarly world, two volumes reappeared early in the twentieth century. It is these texts—a small remnant of a powerful popular literature—that Kim makes accessible to English-speaking readers. Ryojin hisho juxtaposes the sacred with the profane, the high with the low, the male with the female, the old with the new. The songs, in translations that faithfully reflect the sounds and images of the originals, make up the core of this book. They are surrounded by a wealth of material on the imayo genre, the women who sang the songs, the role of court patronage, and other aspects of Heian culture. Far from simply surviving as an aesthetic artifact, the anthology comes to life in its own literary and cultural context. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1994.

Download or read book Teaching that Transforms written by Richard R. Melick, Jr. and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2010-05-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching that Transforms aims to improve the ways in which the Bible is taught to adult learners. As grownups today leave the church in droves, academic professors Richard and Shera Melick recognize that it is in part because many who teach adults have little or no exposure to the distinctive characteristics of adult learners, rendering their lessons ineffective. Affirming the traditional authority of God’s Word while considering the need to make it relevant to every generation in its cultural and educational context, the authors set out to present an easily understood method for teaching the Bible among adults which they describe as “transformactional.” Indeed, the Bible is taught in order to transform a person’s life. And the next great result of that transformation is putting a stronger faith into action.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I was in my forties, I discovered that my grandfather had written a book called Saved and Emancipated in 1941. I first read my grandfather's book nearly sixty years after he wrote it. I was amazed to learn about the holy experiences he had witnessed in his lifetime. Unfortunately, my grandfather passed away before I was able to speak with him about the miraculous transformation he had with our heavenly Father. After God baptized him in the Holy Spirit, my grandfather's mission was to spread the message, to enlighten others with this true story, and to preach the Word of God. I have now reread this book several times, and I want to carry on my grandfather's mission by having this book published and distributed across the nation. I hope this true story of how my grandfather was saved from hell and enlightened by our Lord Jesus Christ will help inspire you as much as it has inspired me.
