There are too many outside evidences of material prosperity and thrift everywhere to be seen in the resourceful valley where the Mormon emigrants from Illinois and Missouri began to make their home in July, 1847, and the vitality of the community has been too plainly manifested on many occasions, for any one easily to escape the conclusion that the “Mormon question,” as it is called, is still one of no insignificant importance. Why and how it has become of such material significance is probably more fully explained in thus volume than in any other one work published. This is volume one out of two.

They brought with them their architects, builders, tools, and experience gained in the Midwest. Within a decade, the fast-growing community had created religious, business, and residential centers with Greek- and Gothic Revival-style structures built of stone and adobe. With the arrival of the railroad, urban architects, and a sizable "gentile" (non-Mormon) population in the 1860s, the city's architecture suddenly diversified in scale, style, and material. By the 1890s, virtually every American style was represented and impressive landmarks were found citywide. This trend continued throughout the early 20th century as talented architects designed in a rich variety of architectural expressions. Although several important buildings are lost, many remain and are now restored. In this book, Salt Lake City's legacy of historic governmental, religious, commercial, industrial, educational, social, and residential architecture--from 1850 through 1930--is pictured and described.

Other States and cities are renowned for their great beauty of seen ery, unsurpassed climate or wealth of mineral and agricultural productions; Utah' has all these and more - she came into existence as the home of the Mormon Church, settled at a time when railroads were unknown to the West; her solitudes undisturbed by any foot save that of the savage red man and the wild beasts who had their lairs in the mountain crags or roamed the valleys and plains at will, far remote from the outposts of civilization. Since then Salt Lake City, as the headquarters of the Church, situated near the great lake whose name she bears, has become the Mecca to which the footsteps of many tourists turn every year. In the early days many sorrows and dissensions came to disturb the peace and harmony that had long prevailed among this people, but that condition has long since passed, and today the stranger may find people of every shade of religious and political belief living in the most pleasant relations, jealous only of the well -being of the State of which all are justly proud, and as she has grown in wealth and importance, people from every State and country are realizing more and more the desirability of this city as a permanent home. We have endeavored to exercise the greatest care in the compilation of this work, employing men of wide experience in this line, who have spent months of conscientious endeavor in se curing reliable data. Care has been taken to have it as correct as possible, and we trust that in 'the main it will be found true to facts and the reliable record of the people of this time that we have sought to make it. We regret that the work will not contain biographies of all the representative men of this city and vicinity, but owing to some of them being absent from home and others not being able to appreciate the value and scope of such a work, a few have necessarily been omitted. Book excerpt: Within the memory of the present generation the map of North America represented the region now covered by the Territories of Utah, Wyoming, Arizona, the State of Nevada and the western part of Colorado, as the Great American Desert. In fact, until the explorations of Bonneville and Fremont, little if anything was known of its character. As early as 1833, Captain Bonneville had trappers on Green River--a tributary of the Colorado--and in July of that year he sent a party from that point westward, to explore this vast region. Passing down what is now called Ogden River, they discovered the Great Salt Lake. Colonel Fremont came afterwards, in 1842, and remained exploring in and around the Great Desert until 1846, but save for these travelers, the country was visited only by trappers and hunters. The advent of civilization into the Great American Desert was on the arrival of the Mormon Pioneers, after their exodus from Nanvoo, in Illinois.
