Book Therapeutic Potential of Furin Inhibition

Download or read book Therapeutic Potential of Furin Inhibition written by Jeroen Declercq and published by Biota Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proprotein convertase Furin is a serine endoprotease which cleaves protein precursors carboxyterminal of basic residues in motifs such as Arg–X–X–Arg and Lys/Arg–Arg. Cleavage usually results in activation of the proprotein but can also inactivate or modify the activity. Therefore, it is not surprising that it plays a major role in many physiological processes and pathologies, including cancer. The other proprotein convertases belonging to the same family, PC1/3, PC2, PACE4, PC4, PC5/6, and PC7, cleave at similar cleavage sites and provide partial redundancy. To unravel the specific role of Furin in vivo, knockout mouse models have been generated. Furin null mice die between e10.5 and e11.5 due to severe ventral closure defects and the failure of the heart tube to fuse and undergo looping morphogenesis. Therefore, a conditional Furin knockout mouse was generated to investigate the role of Furin in specific organs, such as pancreas, liver, T-cells, endothelial cells, and salivary glands, resulting in a severe or mild phenotype depending on the organ investigated. Partial or complete ablation of the Fur gene in salivary gland tumors significantly delayed tumorigenesis in mice. Therefore, Furin inhibition might be considered as a possible therapeutic strategy to treat certain pathologies, such as cancer.

Book Pathology and Genetics of Head and Neck Tumours

Download or read book Pathology and Genetics of Head and Neck Tumours written by World Health Organization and published by IARC. This book was released on 2005 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise reference book provides an international standard for pathologists and oncologists and will serve as an indispensable guide for use in the design of studies monitoring response to therapy and clinical outcome. Diagnostic criteria, pathological features, and associated genetic alterations are described in a strictly disease-oriented manner. Sections on all WHO-recognized neoplasms and their variants include new ICD-O codes, incidence, age and sex distribution, location, clinical signs and symptoms, pathology, genetics, and predictive factors. This volume covers tumours of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, of the nasopharynx, of the hypophyranyx, larynx and trachea, of the oral cavity and oropharynx, of salivary glands, as well as odontogenetic tumours, tumours of the ear, the paraganglionic system, and inherited tumour syndromes. Each entity is extensively discussed with information on clinicopathological, epidemiological, immunophenotypic and genetic aspects of these diseases.

Book Head and Neck Cancer

  • Author : Jacques Bernier
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2016-08-22
  • ISBN : 3319276018
  • Pages : 877 pages

Download or read book Head and Neck Cancer written by Jacques Bernier and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-22 with total page 877 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition provides a comprehensive view of consolidated and innovative concepts, in terms of both diagnosis and treatment. Written by leading international physicians and investigators, this book emphasizes the necessity of combining local and systemic treatments to achieve the objective of yielding higher cure rates and lower toxicities. Heavily updated from the previous edition, it highlights new surgery and radiotherapy techniques, disease awareness, patient quality of life, and comprehensive management. Head-and-neck cancers are a complex clinical entity and their response to treatment is also known to vary markedly in function of host-related factors. Notwithstanding the impressive progresses observed in the field of imaging, head and neck cancers are often diagnosed at a late stage and the presence of locally advanced disease in a significant number of patients implies the use of aggressive treatments in order to both ensure local disease control and reduce distant metastasis risks. In comparison with the first edition, Head and Neck Cancer, Second Edition provides a detailed update of innovative concepts in chemo- and bio-radiation, viral infection impact on tumor growth and response to treatment, and impact of tumor- and host-related factors on treatment outcome.

Book Pathology and Genetics of Tumours of Haematopoietic and Lymphoid Tissues

Download or read book Pathology and Genetics of Tumours of Haematopoietic and Lymphoid Tissues written by World Health Organization and published by IARC. This book was released on 2001 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third volume in the new World Health Organization series on histological and genetic typing of tumours. Tumours of the haematopoietic and lymphoid tissues are covered. This was a collaborative project of the European Association for Haematolpathology and the Society for Haematopathology and others. The WHO classification is based on the principles defined in the Revised European-American Classification of Lymphoid Neoplasms (REAL) classification. Over 50 pathologists from around the world were involved in the project and proponents of all major lymphoma and leukaemia classifications have agreed to accept the WHO as the standard classification of haematological malignancies. So this classification represents the first true world wide concensus of haematologic malignancies. Colour photographs, magnetic resonance and ultrasound images and CT scans are included.

Book The Pituitary

    Book Details:
  • Author : Shlomo Melmed
  • Publisher : Academic Press
  • Release : 2010-12-09
  • ISBN : 0123809274
  • Pages : 745 pages

Download or read book The Pituitary written by Shlomo Melmed and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2010-12-09 with total page 745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pituitary, albeit a small gland, is known as the "master gland" of the endocrine system and contributes to a wide spectrum of disorders, diseases, and syndromes. Since the publication of the second edition of The Pituitary, in 2002, there have been major advances in the molecular biology research of pituitary hormone production and action and there is now a better understanding of the pathogenesis of pituitary tumors and clinical syndromes resulting in perturbation of pituitary function. There have also been major advances in the clinical management of pituitary disorders. Medical researchers and practitioners now better understand the morbidity and mortality associated with pituitary hormone hyposecretion and hypersecretion. Newly developed drugs, and improved methods of delivering established drugs, are allowing better medical management of acromegaly and prolactinoma. These developments have improved the worldwide consensus around the definition of a "cure" for pituitary disease, especially hormone hypersecretion, and hence will improve the success or lack of success of various forms of therapy. It is therefore time for a new edition of The Pituitary. The third edition will continue to be divided into sections that summarize normal hypothalamic-pituitary development and function, hypothalamic-pituitary failure, and pituitary tumors; additional sections will describe pituitary disease in systemic disorders and diagnostic procedures, including imaging, assessment of the eyes, and biochemical testing. The first chapter will be completely new – placing a much greater emphasis on physiology and pathogenesis. Two new chapters will be added on the Radiation and Non-surgical Management of the Pituitary and Other Pituitary Lesions. Other chapters will be completely updated and many new author teams will be invited. The second edition published in 2002 and there have been incredible changes in both the research and clinical aspects of the pituitary over the past 8 years – from new advances in growth hormones to pituitary tumor therapy. - Presents a comprehensive, translational source of information about the pituitary in one reference work - Pituitary experts (from all areas of research and practice) take readers from the bench research (cellular and molecular mechanism), through genomic and proteomic analysis, all the way to clinical analysis (histopathology and imaging) and new therapeutic approaches - Clear presentation by endocrine researchers of the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying pituitary hormones and growth factors as well as new techniques used in detecting lesions (within the organ) and other systemic disorders - Clear presentation by endocrinologists and neuroendocrine surgeons of how imaging, assessment of the eyes, and biochemical testing can lead to new therapeutic approaches
