Book Saligna Eucalyptus Growth in a 15 year old Study in Hawaii

Download or read book Saligna Eucalyptus Growth in a 15 year old Study in Hawaii written by Gerald A. Walters and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A spacing study was started in 1961 to tcst the effects offourdifferent spacings on the growth and development of saligna eucalyptus (Eucalyptus saligna Smith) trees in Hawaii. Spacings tested were 8 by 8 feet (2.4 m), 10 by 10 feet (3.0 m), 12 by 12 feet (3.7 m), and 14 by 14 feet (4.3 m). Plot trees were measured at ages 1, 2, 5, 10, and 15 years. Measurements included d, h.h., total height, height to a4and 9-inch (10.2- and 22.9-cm) top (outside bark), and height to live crown. Board feet and cubic foot volumes were determined. After 15 years, trees 140 to 150 feet tall were common in all spacings. Average d.b.h. ranged from 8.6 inches (21.8 cm) in the 8- by 8-foot spacings to 12.5 inches (31.8 cm) in the 14- by 14-foot spacings. Large volumes of wood were produced, averaging more than 29,000 board feet per acre, or more than 7600 cubic feet per acre (532 m3/ha)

Book Diameter density Relationships Provide Tentative Spacing Guidelines for Eucalyptus Saligna in Hawaii

Download or read book Diameter density Relationships Provide Tentative Spacing Guidelines for Eucalyptus Saligna in Hawaii written by Dean S. DeBell and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trials have been established in Hawaii to develop spacing guidelines for Eucalyptus saligna plantations. Substantial competition-related mortalicy occurred in densely planted plots of three spacing trials. Data on stand diameter and surviving number of trees on these plots were plotted in logarithmic form to estimate a "self-thinning" or maximum diameter-stand density line. An "operating" maximum line was defined-one representing 70 percent of the total number of trees that could reach any given mean diameter if the stand were allowed to reach the "self-thinning" level. This information provides a guide to the number of E. saligna trees to plant per hectare for selected target diameters at harvest.

Book Improving Plantation Establishment by Optimizing Growth Capacity and Planting Time of Western Yellow Pines

Download or read book Improving Plantation Establishment by Optimizing Growth Capacity and Planting Time of Western Yellow Pines written by George T. Ferrell and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A trial of 36 species of Eucalyptus near Concord, California, found species of sufficiently rapid growth and good survival to merit further screening. Species from western Australia and of the subgenus Monocalyptus all failed on the site. E. camaldulensis, E. dalrympleana, E. glaucescens, E. grandis, E. nitens, E. ovata, and E. viminalis were the species with best survival and growth.

Book Growth of 11 Introduced Tree Species on Selected Forest Sites in Hawaii

Download or read book Growth of 11 Introduced Tree Species on Selected Forest Sites in Hawaii written by Michael G. Buck and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growth and volume data for trees on 25 plots reprsenting 11 introduced species in Hawaii were recorded during a 21-year period. Tree were measured at about 5-year intervals to determine overall growth and stand development. The sites selected were considered better-than-average in terms of elevation, amount of precipitation, and soil quality. Except for redwood, stands were unmanaged. The data reported suggest that 10 tree species can grow fast enough to warrant more extensive plantings for timber or wood fiber production.

Book Mixed Plantations of Eucalyptus and Leguminous Trees Enhance Biomass Production

Download or read book Mixed Plantations of Eucalyptus and Leguminous Trees Enhance Biomass Production written by Dean S. DeBell and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two Eucalyptus species-E. saligna Sm. and E. grandis Hill-are especially favored in Hawaii for wood, fiber, and fuel production because of their quick growth and high yields. Their growth is limited, however, on many sites by low levels of available nitrogen. Supplemental nitrogen can be provided by nitrogen-fixing plants, such as legumes. A test was conducted to determine whether planting two leguminous species-Acacia melaxylon R. Br. and Albizia facataria (L.) Fosberg-could increase biomass production. Results after 65 months suggest that Eucalyptus growth can be increased substantially by planting the species in mixture with leguminous trees. Total biomass production was much greater in the mixed species plantations than in the pure Eucalyptus plantation.

Book Seed Dissemination in Small Clearcuttings in North central California

Download or read book Seed Dissemination in Small Clearcuttings in North central California written by Philip M. McDonald and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a 1964-1967 study on the Challenge Experimental Forest, seedfall was evaluated in 2-, 5-, and 10-acre circular clearcuttings. During the 4 years, 10 seed crops, ranging from light to bumper, were produced by ponderosa pine. white fir, Douglas-fir, and incense cedar. Seedfall ranged from 76 to 40,691 sound seed per acre (188 to 100,547/ha) for a single species in a given year. From 89 to 100 percent of each species' seed fell within an area 1 1/2 times the height of the average dominant tree. Overall, seed distribution was highly variable.
