Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book of 2017 • Named a Best Book of the Year by Slate and NPR • Longlisted for the Orwell Prize One of our most important public intellectuals reveals the hidden history of our current global crisis How can we explain the origins of the great wave of paranoid hatreds that seem inescapable in our close-knit world—from American shooters and ISIS to Donald Trump, from a rise in vengeful nationalism across the world to racism and misogyny on social media? In Age of Anger, Pankaj Mishra answers our bewilderment by casting his gaze back to the eighteenth century before leading us to the present. He shows that as the world became modern, those who were unable to enjoy its promises—of freedom, stability, and prosperity—were increasingly susceptible to demagogues. The many who came late to this new world—or were left, or pushed, behind—reacted in horrifyingly similar ways: with intense hatred of invented enemies, attempts to re-create an imaginary golden age, and self-empowerment through spectacular violence. It was from among the ranks of the disaffected that the militants of the nineteenth century arose—angry young men who became cultural nationalists in Germany, messianic revolutionaries in Russia, bellicose chauvinists in Italy, and anarchist terrorists internationally. Today, just as then, the wide embrace of mass politics and technology and the pursuit of wealth and individualism have cast many more billions adrift in a demoralized world, uprooted from tradition but still far from modernity—with the same terrible results. Making startling connections and comparisons, Age of Anger is a book of immense urgency and profound argument. It is a history of our present predicament unlike any other.

Download or read book Ai Weiwei written by Weiwei Ai and published by Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, the Chinese conceptual artist, activist and exile Ai Weiwei has created art that addresses complex and sensitive themes of political, ethical, and social urgency. His artworks, which call upon both Western and Chinese cultural traditions, are deeply engaged with the history of art, drawing particularly on conceptualism and minimalism. From the start of his multifaceted career in the late 1970s, Ai has envisioned artistic practice as a deeply human, moral, and political endeavour. This volume presents the artist's work in dialogue with theoretical texts by the Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben and the German-Jewish philosopher Hannah Arendt alongside interpretive essays that illuminate the artist's work on human rights, his engagement with historical Chinese artifacts, and his critical consideration of the effects of globalisation.

Book excerpt: This work travels the shifting terrains of architectural invention, where new spatial devices on a variety of scales - from the handheld to the inhabitable - reveal previously overlooked dimensions of the built and natural environments. From philosophical toys and ironic provocations to a room-sized kinetic mechanism that models future climates, these devices are not merely diagnostic but creative, deploying fictions as a means of exploring different futures. Exhibition: Nevada Museum of Art (13.08.2011-12.2.2012).

Book Symphony for a Beloved Sun

Download or read book Symphony for a Beloved Sun written by Anish Kapoor and published by Walther Konig Verlag. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anish Kapoor's sculptures represent an important position in contemporary art. Born in Bombay in 1954 and living in London since the early 1970s, he combines Western and Eastern influences to create special work. He became famous with large-scale sculptures in public spaces, most recently on the occasion of the Olympic games in London in 2012. His multi awardwinning work (1991 Turner prize) has been exhibited worldwide since his first solo exhibition in 1980. The monograph gives a concentrated overview of his diverse oeuvre of the last 40 years, from the pigment works to the mirror works and large polished sculptures. In the main section, the temporary, site-related works in the Martin-Gropius-Bau, such as the "....." in the spectacular, central hall, are documented in sketches, models and installation photos. These new works, which impressively frame the architecture of the Martin-Gropius-Bau, are elaborately illustrated and elucidated.
