This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saint Peter and the First Years of Christianity It is true that he has been suspected of accommodating his history to his own views, thereby making it a plea for his own party. According to this supposition, the Church was then divided into two factions: on one side were Peter and the J udaizers, stubbornly fighting for the legal Observances; on the other the adherents of Paul, just as zealous to throw off the yoke. Luke, so they say, set about conciliating his brethren, trying to persuade them that under apparent dis agreements they had but one heart and one soul; every incident which does not exactly support this notion they either suppress or disfigure. The sequel of our narrative will show what weight is to be accorded to these fantasies; but in a word, it is easy to reply here that the Author of the Acts, far from concealing the dissensions in the Church, does, on the contrary, depict very strikingly their numerous feat ures. It is he who best exhibits these divisions of sentiment, who details their origin and their developments. This book was released on 2023-02-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Next to the period of Our Lord's earthly life, the apostolic age that followed was the richest and most revealing for Christians. It was then that the blueprint for living the Gospels was drawn. Abbé Fouard gives us a brilliant factual account of these early years of Christianity. Peter and the other Apostles seem to stand before us as living men. With Abbé Fouard we follow them as they descend the Mount of Olives to re-enter the Supper-Room, where with Mary they persevered in prayer until the Holy Spirit came. Afterwards we see how he to whom Jesus had said, 'Feed my lambs, feed my sheep, ' took the position of leader, the Holy Ghost first speaking by his mouth. We wish that more Church historians knew how to bring out our religion as a living thing....Conviction is being overthrown to give place to doubt, and the remedy is knowledge of religion as God gave it to man through the channels which He appointed for its extension. Abbé Fouard's book will help to make the truth known.

Book The Epistles of St Peter Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Epistles of St Peter Classic Reprint written by John Henry Jowett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistles of St. Peter Verse 3 According to His great mercy. I am glad and grateful that the pregnant passage is prefaced by this word. The regenerated soul is just enveloped in great mercy. Now mercy implies sympathy. We cannot have mercy without sympathy. Without mercy we cannot have leniency; but leniency is only thin, pinched fruit compared with the fat, qcy fruit Of mercy. Without sympathy we may have giving, but unsympathetic giving is like the cold, outer threshold, while mercy is like a glowing hearthstone. Mercy implies sympathy. GO a step further. Sympathy suggests the choicest companionship, the rarest Of all fellow ships. Where there is true sympathy, there is the most exquisite companionship. If then, our God and Father enswathes us in great mercy, He visits in the sweetest fellowships. Therefore in the redeemed life there can be no loneliness, for in the Father's presence all possible loneliness is destroyed. The mercy which implies companionship accompanies me as a dynamic from my faintest breathing as a babe-christian on to the consummation when I shall have become a full-grown man in Christ. Download or read book Life of St Peter written by François De Ligny and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-09-09 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an opportunity to review your scriptural knowledge of the first pope, and to take a journey through the early history of the Church. Learn the real reason for St. Peter's coming to Rome, and why he might have later been exiled from the city. Learn why the "Babylon" the saint mentions in his First Epistle refers to Rome. Learn who was the first writer who dared to deny that St. Peter was ever at that city. The author painstakingly proves, through ancient histories and the Church Fathers of the early centuries, that St. Peter's residence in the Eternal City cannot be refuted. Doubts about his presence there first arose in the 14th century; and in spite of the proofs contained in Fr. De Ligny's thoroughly researched work, controversy about St. Peter's residence in Rome persists to this day in some quarters.

Book Simon Peter in Scripture and Memory

Download or read book Simon Peter in Scripture and Memory written by Markus Bockmuehl and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Jesus, Peter is the most frequently mentioned individual both in the Gospels and in the New Testament as a whole. He was the leading disciple, the "rock" on which Jesus would build his church. How can we know so little about this formative figure of the early church? World-renowned New Testament scholar Markus Bockmuehl introduces the New Testament Peter by asking how first- and second-century sources may be understood through the prism of "living memory" among the disciples of the apostolic generation and the students of those disciples. He argues that early Christian memory of Peter underscores his central role as a bridge-building figure holding together the diversity of first-century Christianity. Drawing on more than a decade of research, Bockmuehl applies cutting-edge scholarship to the question of the history and traditions of this important but strangely elusive figure. Bockmuehl provides fresh insight into the biblical witness and early Christian tradition that New Testament students and professors will value.
