Ce qu'il a cherché à mettre en valeur, c'est un aspect de la théologie biblique d'Augustin. Il a délibérément choisi de suivre pas à pas, à travers l'œuvre de l'évêque d'Hippone, son exégèse des péricopes de la première Épître de saint Jean sur la charité ; nous assistions ainsi à l'éclosion d'une théologie de la charité que saint Augustin a recueillie et élaborée à la source vive de l'Écriture. Ce n'est pas là un mince mérite du travail qu'on va lire ; la méthode mise en œuvre ici - considérer l'Écriture comme la source d'une œuvre patristique et non comme son illustration - n'est pas encore très commune ; elle requiert une grande soumission aux intentions des auteurs dont on analyse l'œuvre et elle risque de déconcerter certains lecteurs d'aujourd'hui trop pressés ou de formation trop cartésienne. Mais le courage n'est jamais sans fruit et la valeur perdurable d'un enseignement majeur d'Augustin retrouve sa fraîcheur."

In our own day the Letter is no less scrutinized, meditated and proclaimed. His message is about eternal life, that fullness of knowledge and love which belong to God alone, and which the Father willed to share with us by sending His Son Jesus Christ.
